  1. Forgot to post these... Went to the Wings Out West Airshow in Prescott, AZ on October 6th. It's small event with a few aerobatic demonstrations and a small but very neat static display enhanced this year by a US Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet and a pair of F-5N Tiger IIs out of MCAS Yuma!
  2. Hi Everyone, Here is my next project for duing my week off. The Dragon 1/700 scale kit of the Pennsylvania class battleship USS Arizona BB-39. This kit includes photo etched parts along with some brass anchor chain and also includes 2 Japanese Navy torpedo bombers in clear plastic. This kit does not include a display stand for the ship, however the bottom of the hull is flat so the ship can sit on the bottom of the hull, however I intend to try and design a custom stand for the ship. Anyway here are the photos of the sprues. Anyway I will be making a start on this kit tomorrow. Rick
  3. USS Arizona detail sets Eduard 1:200 It’s been quite a while since the Trumpeter 1:200 USS Arizona was released and there have been some terrific builds seen here on Britmodeller and at shows, usually using another manufacturers aftermarket parts. Eduard seem to have been a bit slow with their additions to the Arizona aftermarket scene, and have only just released the first three sets for the ship. Each set comes in their large zip lock style packaging and includes are single large sheet of relief etched brass. The design and detail are well up to the usual standard we have come to expect from Eduard and the instructions seem quite a bit better, in that they are clear and easier to read than their normal fare. Some parts of the kits details will need to be removed before the etched parts can be added. Part 1- (53-099) is designed to add detail to the ships cranes, but also includes quite a few new parts for other areas of the ship. To begin with the main turret barbettes have new armoured rings attached to the top of each mounting. These will need to be carefully rolled to shape before the fixing struts are folded in and affixed to the mounting. The turrets themselves receive new turret roofs, railings, mantle opening surrounds, ladders, rangefinder doors and tampions that look like they will need special care in shaping and gluing. The funnel receives new hand and foot rails around the funnel top, plus new railings, guards and window frames for a number of the platforms. The crane jibs utilise the kit parts which are then clad top and bottom with etched sheets. The upper sheet also has the railings included thus making them easier to fit as one unit rather than faff around trying to fit a separate set of railings. The each side of the jib are fitted with three extra plates whilst the styrene cable roller housings on top are removed and replaced. The crane hooks are all new and include two sizes of hook and their respective cable wheels. Lastly the king post is fitted out with new vertical ladders and railings around the platform top. Part 2- (53-100) is designed to almost completely replace the ships catapults and uses only very few of the kits detail parts. Not only will the modeller be required to carefully fold each and every part in this set to shape, they will also need to add some styrene rod from their own supplies. Each catapult starts off with the main frame and track. To these, the cable wheels, accumulators, railings and control boxes are all attached. The quarterdeck/fantail catapults turntable is taken from the kit and further details added. The set also comes with separate launch cradles for the kit aircraft to sit upon and in the case of the turret catapult the additional support structure and access ladder for fitting to X turrets roof. The kits Kingfisher aircraft will need to have surgery to remove the pilots and observers canopies and the inside of the fuselage thinned down. These need to be done to accept the internal cockpit structures, which include the rear machine gun, shoulder height shelf and mounting rail, instrument panel, cockpit tub and seat. Externally the aircraft receive new float cross bracing and struts, ignition harness for the engine, access ladder, plus the aerial mast and weapons pylon. Part 3 – (53-104), contains details for the ships lifeboats and is pretty comprehensive even though it’s all contained on just one sheet. The motor boats receive a new grating for the central open deck which also includes a new steering console, steering wheel, gear stick, hand rails and railing bow and stern. The complex cradles and their respective support will look really good when assembled. The rowing boats are fitted with new railings to the rear, bitts, hawse pipes, oars, and tillers. Once completed, the boats can be mounted to their new cradles, which are also provided. The details are very well done and they really make the lifeboats stand out, rather than being overshadowed by the rest of the ship. A nice touch is the inclusion of the two main accommodation ladder and its upper and lower platforms. There is another platform that the instructions call to be fitted adjacent to B turret on the starboard side, which I can only presume to be some sort of lookout point for when navigating in harbour. Conclusion So the first three sets out of how many? If the 1:200 Bismarck is anything to go by we should expect quite a few. The details included are excellent, the instructions are easy to follow and they should help transform the standard kit, but I just can’t help feel Eduard have missed the boat so to speak. The kit has been out quite a while now and the other manufacturers got their sets out soon after release so I’d imagine there are quite a few kits in stashes already paired up with etch etc. Still, I guess it allows more choice for the discerning maritime modeller. 4. This is my first ship model, It's Trumpeter's 1/200th Scale USS Arizona depicted around the time of her demise December 1941. The model has the excellent MKI PE and Wooden Deck set, She is painted with WEM Enamels (which takes me back!) Hope you like her, the build thread is here :- http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234932941-1200-arizona-actually-done/ Here are the pictures. Thanks for looking and all your support during the build. Nick
  5. Well this is a first, having strayed into tanky-clanky things already, here comes boats! There I was minding my own business at Telford, when someone, quite possibly satan, quite literally put a 1/200 trumpy Arizona under my nose priced at fifty quid, this is a £200 kit so what are you going to do? Well if you're me, buy it obviously. Bargain or what? Well maybe, then came the After Market stuff. Oh dear, the fifty quid is well and truly out of the window then. So after patiently waiting for all the AM bits I needed from Japan to arrive - I've started. This thing is a monster, about a metre long, I've now got the MK1 design wooden deck and PE and it's simply superb, the kit's very good to start with in fairness but this is some of the nicest PE I've seen and the deck is something else. I've been cracking on today and have got a surprising amount done. Too tired for photos, but stay tuned if you're interested. God knows what I'm going to do with, it's already been made extremely clear that the mantelpiece is out of the question, plus it probably won't fit. Might end up mooring it somewhere and renting it out. Nick
  6. USS Arizona 1941 Eduard 1:350 53069 Recently arrived at Britmodeller is this new set of etched parts for the Hobbyboss 1:350 USS Arizona. This has got be one of the biggest sets of etch that Eduard do outside of their Big Ed series. Included in the large zip lock bag are three equally sized sheets of 200mm x 130mm and one smaller one of 153mm x 135mm, filled to the edges with new and replacement parts. Although the Hobbyboss kit is quite nice out of the box, some of the details are quite clunky and thick, due to the nature of the moulding process. Almost all of these details are replaced or enhanced from this super pack, plus many items missing from the kit are added. Sheet 1 contains replacement parts for the various bridge houses and support structures within the tripod tower layers, including the foretop and maintop structures. In fact it appears that all the parts that go into building the tripod masts are replaced, including the tripods themselves, which are replaced with plastic rod in the instructions, but may be better replaced with suitable brass rods for extra stability and the option of soldering all the major parts together, making a really strong structure. Additionally there are a selection of inclined ladders, secondary armament blast screens, (the kit parts need to be removed first), foldable flag yards and parts for A and Y turrets. The parts on sheet two include the tripod mast decks, funnel structures and decking, a very comprehensive ships catapults for X turret and quarterdeck, each with, air bottles, aircraft launch cradle, walkways and railings, ships aircraft handling and boat cranes, plus various watertight doors, hatches and turret hand rails. Further gun tubs for the secondary and tertiary armament are included along with vertical ladders, mast supports, main gun tampons, range clocks and main turret canvas attachment rings. Sheet three contains hawsepipe surrounds, guides and gratings, anchor chains, (although these may be best replaced with real chain), more deck and foretop structures, boat cradles, tripod mast ladders, more inclined and vertical ladders, gunwhales, and thwarts for the ships rowing boats, new aft structures, railings, hatches and liferings for the ships motor boats. The final, smallest sheet contains host of miscellaneous items, such as additional railings, liferings, main turret front plates, derricks, inclined ladders, rudders and flag staffs for the ships boats, and more deck structures such as ammunition lockers. [/center Railing Set (53078) Available separately there is a sheet of railings for the USS Arizona. These supplement the smaller railings included in the above pack, and are for the main railings around the main and upper decks. Each length of railing is pre-cut to the correct size to fit into its appropriate position. As usual the relief etching is very finely done and because of the bottom rail, very easy to fit using the modellers preferred method. Conclusion With the main set containing so many parts there may be a bit of apprehension taking on such an extensive build, but it will certainly be worth the effort. I was surprised how much of the original kit is meant to be either cut off or replaced completely, but then I guess that is what it takes to build a super finely detailed model. With the addition of the railing set you will end up with a true museum quality example. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
