  1. This all looks very intriguing. I'm watching this with interest! Nick
  2. Absolutely stunning. I love the subtle weathering. Nick
  3. I've recently returned to the hobby and have noticed a massive inconsistency in Airfix's decals. My last two models have been completely difference. Their 1/72 Spitfire Mk IX had decals so thick I may as well have left them on the backing paper! However, the 1/72 Fulmar that I have just finished had superb decals. I believe the decals come from various sources (someone more enlightened may confirm or refute this), so it is a little bit hit and miss. Hopefully the bad decals won't spoil what's looking like a fantastic project! Nick
  4. If you're using Halfords rattle cans you can cut the lacquer using their cutting compound (it comes in a yellow tube). You need to give the lacquer a couple of weeks to cure properly but once it has you can cut it back to a mirror finish, especially if you finish it off with car polish. It's also incredibly forgiving, as any dust that may have got caught up in the lacquer can be polished away. Nick
  5. I completely agree about the canopy - it was very well thought out, and the frosting made the texture consistent with the rest of the kit. I actually used the heavy frame of the canopy to have a go at masking the glazing because the camo pattern covers the clear part and I wanted to paint everything at once. For a first attempt I was quite pleased with how it turned out. The canopy is very forgiving for a novice like me! Nick
  6. Thanks for the kind replies. I didn't realise there was an aftermarket set for it. I think my next Fulmar will be sooner than I thought! Nick
  7. I thought I'd post the build that I finished earlier today. It's Airfix's 1/72 Fulmar finished as a Mk II, using the decals supplied with the kit. This build has really sparked my interest in the aircraft, so this will not be my last Fulmar! It was built completely OOB, as I try and refine my basic modelling skills before I start tackling more in depth projects. I mostly used Xtracrylix, and sealed it with Humbrol matt varnish from a rattlecan. I really enjoyed this kit - the fit was fantastic and I'm relatively pleased with the final result - although as ever, there are a couple of aspects I would have liked to have done better. Hope you like it! Nick
  8. I agree on the weathering. I ended up getting too scared because it's so white! Maybe next time...
  9. Now that's a bit of a stunner! Nick
  10. Thanks for all the kind comments. Bob, I sprayed this kit after I had a disaster trying to brush paint the white on my first attempt - I don't think there was a panel line left visible! I am growing to love my airbrush, having played around with pre-shading on the kit I am currently working on (1/48 Airfix Hawk 100 Series). I really enjoyed building this kit, and it went together incredibly easily which was very helpful for my slightly limited skills! Thanks again for all the kind comments. Nick
  11. Hi everyone! After spending some time looking through lots of posts and picking up as many tips as possible, I thought it time to post something I've made on this forum! This is my second attempt at the relatively recent Airfix Hurricane IIc kit. My first attempt was a brush painted nightmare of white paint and expletives. This one has turned out a little better I think. It was built completely OOB and painted in one of the kit schemes (835 NAS). I used a mixture of Humbrol acrylics (which were awful), Citadel and Xtracrylix (both of which I now love). I think I'm learning with every build, but any comments, criticisms, tips etc would be greatly appreciated! Nick
