Hi all.

I have a 1/48 Airfix Hawk, fully assembled with the Neomega Cockpit and the CMK exterior update set. I was going to build this as a TWU aircraft in the Grey scheme but I've changed my mind and would now like a stab at XX154 as used at Llanbedr as below:

http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/Ha...Hawk/1454365/L/

I have some Modeldecal sheets (I think they are actually 1/72) and access to a Laser printer so I should be find with the white fuselage serial and the DTEO Llanbedr title on the nose, however the aircraft has XX154 on the underside in white. Are there any generic sheets that would provide such serials in the correct size? (Does anyone know the correct size in scale inches?).

Best Regards,

Ed

Hi Ed, I have measured the 1\48 Italeri serials and they come out at 12". These are avaliable in white from Xtradecal set X48 - 045 but you will need 2 sets as they only give you 2 X's in the 12" range. MODeller

Thanks.

MODeller,

Am I right in saying one sheet will do as the under wing serial was only on one side? I don't have an underside shot of XX154 but I'm guessing its the same as the ETPS aircraft below:

Hi Ed, Yes you are quite right only one underwing serial, put it down to a senior moment! I have found a photo in my files which confirms this. if you PM me with your email address I can forward this (and any others) to you. MODeller

I think Hawk underwing serials are 16 inches high. I've used 24 inch serials from Xtradecals X-72065 which seem to work well. They're black but X-48047, their RAF Hawk sheet, has white numbers which would do XX154 but I don't think it has white Xs.

Did one of Modeldecal's old 1/72 RAF serials sheets have 24 inch white numbers and letters?

Hope this helps.

Ed,

After checking last night, I found Modeldecal sheet 60 has white numerals in sizes from 16 to 48 inches and sheet 58 has white letters in sizes from 16 to 24 inches. The 24 inch size should suit a 1/48 Hawk. Unfortunately they are both sold out at all the stores I checked and they are about the only RAF serial Modeldecal sheets I don't have!

The letters sheet has 14 Xs.

Phil,

Thanks. Am I right in saying that the paint scheme on that Xtradecal sheet for the RR Hawk is incorrect. From looking at pictures it would appear that the inner wing tops are white and not grey and the underside inner wings are blue and again, not grey. This pic seems to indicate the Xtradecal sheet is wrong:

I know I am building XX154 but also my pictures of that seem to show the same. I think I could make the serial from those numbers on that Xtradecal sheet (I have two copies of it) as I could make up the "X"s from some of the other decals as they are fairly simple shapes.

Thanks once again. I'll look out for this and resort to my approach above if I can't find it.

I bow to the experts! I hadn't realised those sheets were wrong but then why pollute lovely raspberry ripple schemes with grey?

I have an easier task on my XX154 as I'm going for its first flight and its serials are black!

Phil.
