Peter Marshall Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Started today, as a quick simple kit after the Wellington, Building OOB and trying to avoid getting bogged down in details..... Seat painted up Cockpit tub painted Cockpit then lightly weathered with some oils, but nothing major Build up the ATAR Then get the fuselage halves together - with a little Mr Surfacer 1000 on the joins Not a bad afternoon's work. Peter
Alex Gordon Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 Tip for the upper wing half to fuselage joint both sides.Join the upper wing sections to the fuselage first. This took two hits, rear end first then front end for me,then think about joining the lower wing section to the completed and glue set upper wing and fuselage sub assembly. Can't post pictures but this method worked perfectly.
periklis_sale Posted January 22, 2010 Posted January 22, 2010 loking good for OOB build mate! keep the photos coming!
Peter Marshall Posted January 23, 2010 Author Posted January 23, 2010 Today's work on the Mirage, starting with the wheel wells: Then fit them to the lower wing part Then attaching the top wing parts. The best way seems to be to glue in sections letting it dry to get a good joint. Also you will need to sand the top of the wheel wells to get a good fit with the fuselage. It needed a few spots of filler, but nothing too bad Using the same gluing in sections I got a nice joint on the wing roots Then masked off the canopy, and sprayed the intakes silver Fitted the last part of the intake - this bit always needs a little filler to get it to smooth in. Sprayed the canopy black for the framing Then on with a coat of Alclad Grey Primer - this revealed a couple of seams that will need some more work tomorrow, but nothing major. Peter
dahut Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 Its looking nice one of the best builds of this one Ive seen. The HB Mirage is pretty nice out of the box, then?
periklis_sale Posted January 23, 2010 Posted January 23, 2010 what did you use to mask tha canopy mate?
Peter Marshall Posted January 24, 2010 Author Posted January 24, 2010 Parafilm for the main section, and Vallejo liquid mask for the front section. I polished the plastic before masking, and parafilm was having a tough time sticking to the front section as the framing is quite subtle, so I used liquid mask, applied with a cocktail stick. The Vallejo mask will run up to the framing and then capillary along it if you are careful.
Peter Marshall Posted January 24, 2010 Author Posted January 24, 2010 Todays's work, or is it a Mirage....... First sorted out the small bits that needed a little more filling Then primed, and pre-shaded Sprayed the bottom blue, then proceeded to spray the sandy brown Followed by the Dark Earth And finally masked off the nose and sprayed that black Peter

Peter Marshall Posted January 30, 2010 Author Posted January 30, 2010 As seems to be a growing tradition with my builds, today has been a bit of a mask-a-thon. First up masking the intakes edges / cone Then sprayed it white to give a base for the red Then sprayed the Red - Vallejo Model Air Scarlet Masked off the front of the cone and the intake Sprayed the intake silver (Citadel Mithral Silver) Then unmasked...... (for a short while) Then masked off the Avionics bay door Sprayed that with Citadel Chainmail, and unmasked Finally the small fin plates - once again masked off Sprayed them Usa light grey (Vallejo Model Air 46), then masked off the strips and sprayed - Scarlett again for the bottom strip and matt black for the top two. Finally a coat of Klear - which I didn't need to mask anything for.... Peter
Peter Marshall Posted January 31, 2010 Author Posted January 31, 2010 Right - first thing for today was another coat of klear on the airframe, so I couldn't do a lot with that, so I sorted out the stores. First up the Magic II missiles, painted white, the seekers semi-gloss black, the exhaust drilled out and given some oil washes. Then the fuel tanks and pylons, filled, sanded and sprayed Finally the Access ladder - Sprayed scarlet then weathered with some Chainmail dry brushing and an oil wash. Peter
Peter Marshall Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Got the Decals on last night - sorry for the poor photo, but it's dark at 7am.... Peter
Peter Marshall Posted February 6, 2010 Author Posted February 6, 2010 Today finishing off the Mirage: First on with the wash, which didn't go on very well this time - it seems to have clumped a bit, so i'll need to add some washing up liquid While that was drying, I re-sprayed the fuel tanks. I found a photo of this aircraft with beaten up looking Aluminum drop tanks, and thought they looked more interesting. So I sprayed with a combination of duralumin and aluminium alclads. Then put the filler cap decals on, added some staining with Tensocrom Kerosine and an oil wash on the panel lines Next adding some hydralic streaks to the elevons - first put some Mig Productions engine grease oil paint along the joints. Then with a brush moistened with turps, drag back along the airflow Then matted the whole thing down Assembled the undercarraige Fitted the doors and tanks - at this point I found a gotcha with the instructions. If you want the missiles on you have to leave off the outer actuators, and replace with the pylon. I hadn't noticed that and the actuators are solidly attached so rather than wrecking it I left the Magic's off. Finally fitted the cockpit and other glazing - Full photos to follow. Peter
