mikeew Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 For my first KUTA build I will get this piece of junk finished up, (I'm sure it'll turn out great now I said that!) I bought this kit within a month of its release and was really looking forward to it. The build progressed really well until I hit the filling and sanding tedium encountered when i deided to have the dorsal airbrake modelled closed and the fit was far from good. The intakes were rather over engineered (IMHO) and needed some TLC and sanding etc to get a decent fit. In short ,that faffing really got to me and put me off finishing it and it has sat on the workroom shelf for approx 2 yrs I reckon. On further inspection this evening, there really isn't that much left to do. I need to give it a damn good clean and dust and then make good lall the joints and get some primer on to se if all is well. The jet pipes need painting as do the weapons. The gear doors are all sprayed white on the insides, the seat can be dropped in later on, the canopy has been polished and dipped in Klear and is safely tucked away in an airtight container. This really shouldn't take me long at all, the only factor I have is that the Vulcan for Telford is still in need of painting and finishing and this will take priority until its done as only 12 days remain. The decal sheet is still impressive though! I'll be building ZJ918 from 3 sqn RAF.

I can thoroughly symapthise though, for such a well regarded kit is really is a bit of a dog. I found I had to fill and sand every single thing that I fitted to the bloody thing and it does get to you after a while. The thing is though, it's worth it because it's a fine looking model when you eventually get there. Also, a note of caution, the decal sheet looks amazing but they are absolutely horrible to use. If you can replace any of it from the spares box - do! Jen.

Not only are the decals horrible to use (mine still were determined to silver despite glossy Future coats and copious Micro sol/set) but the grey of the stencils and serials is way too dark so they have to be oversprayed when in place. Also the wing "NO STEP" stencils are incorrect for the RAF options and should be replaced with a roughly triangular shaped "dashed line" with "DO NOT STEP OUTSIDE THIS AREA" in the mid point of the leading and trailing edge and wing root lines. If you don't want to wait for the MA decals that fix this I posted some pics of the decals I made here. You are welcome to a copy of the file - P.M. me your email addy and I send it to you. HTH, Ian

I've got one of these planned as a post Telford build (Thanks to Mike Reeves ) Still, I've got the nice TwoMikes intake covers which will get rid of the awkward sanding job on the intakes Look forward to watching it come to life Mike! mikeew Posted November 4, 2008 Author Posted November 4, 2008 Thanks guys, I am still sorta looking forward to seeing it finished....I think Jen, did you use the now tried and tested Klear method for decal aplication? I have not ever had silvering ever using this technique.
