Hi all! The latest in my series of types built in Latin colours. This time an F-80C Shooting Star operated by the 1st Grupo de Combate, Fuerza Aerea Colombiana (Colombian Air Force), and based at Palanquero Air Base. She is depicted as she appeared when participating in “Operación Solidaridad”, which was a joint US-Latin forces exercise in March 1961. At that time she operated with others from Howard AFB, Panama. Other countries that participated were Peru and the USA. This is how she was at that time: The model is the Sword F-80C and is reasonably straight forward to build. Contrary to some reports, it needed little filler but did need some trimming and sanding here and there to get her reasonable. The biggest change from the kit is a addition of Fletcher wing tanks. So, what did I do/use?: Sword F-80C kit Hasegawa T-33A wing tanks. These need a slight mod by bringing the fins forward. They are inaccurate as they come in the kit. Paints were Humbrol enamels – 27001 Aluminium metalcote overall, 209 Fluorescent Fire Orange, 21 Black, 226 Interior green, and others for small parts. Then Mattcote (for the dayglo) and Glosscote (the remainder) Decals were Armycast (for T-33 "Silver Star") plus the kit stencils and home printed serials and codes. The badge (home printed) on the port side was an exercise “zap”. I had no Spanish stencils so used the kit ones. Weathered with Flory Dirt Here she is: I hope you like her. Martin

Hi all, Seeking a bit of advice from anyone who knows. I want to build an F-80 in 1/72 and the choice that I have is either the Airfix kit or to bodge an Airfix nose on to a Sword RF-80. Having matched the two up their are very clear differences, apart from the obvious (RF- nose ). Any ideas which is best to go for? I am tempted to think the Airfix is better but I'd bow to the collective knowledge out there. Thanks. Martin

Hey all Soon I'm going to be building the Hobby Boss 1/48 F-80C Shooting Star as "Evil Eye Fleagle" with the big shark mouth as seen over Korea. The kit provides the "P-38 Style" and "Misawa" wing tip tanks as well as the P-51 looking underwing tanks. The question I have is; did the F-80 have a third style of wing tip tank? Looking I pictures I see tanks that are slimmer than the "P-38" style, but shorter than the "Misawa" style. These are the "P-38" Style Tanks: These are the "Misawa" style tanks: And here are the ones in question: Could these be some sort of shortened version of the Misawa tanks? If anyone could shed some light on this, I would be most appreciated. Regards ANS

OMG, I'm doing a plane and it's part of our Group Saturday Build Club so I'll only be working on it for 4 hours every other Saturday so, this should be interesting as there are technically only 4 more Build Saturdays between now and the end of this GB, that's 16 hours (because if they happen to clash with Club Night, also a Saturday, we don't have them!). A few of the Club members get together to build without interruption from family etc and it goes quite well. Now, some will say the kit is wrong, it needs this or that but this will be strictly 'out the box' Early construction seems to be going well at least there is sustenance Well, this how far I've got in the first 4 hours - not bad considering it's the first aircraft built by me in over 30 years (with guidance and advice from SleeperService) This will now be consigned to the kit box until Saturday 17th May when I shall continue with the cockpit construction and I start throwing some paint around. That part is a peculiarity of Aircraft building - painting the inside before gluing it together
