  1. So finally a slightly late update to this. So I made a start to the monster carbon decal work. They area little tricky in places but with a bit of Microsol and a hairdryer they lay down quite well. This top area was the 3rd decal put on and frankly it worried me as there were a few more curves in this area than the 2 side bits. But it went down really well. The most rear hatch was next up and did need a little more patience than the side areas as I needed to get the centre line centre Left all above to dry for a day as I didn't just want to power on and mess more up by rushing. Then came back and took on probably the second most worrying area for me, the rear bumper, due to it having every type of curve going. The top side went fine. But then on the side right in the curve I was worried about I touched the decal by accident after microsol went on it and I stretched the decal. Not a big issue but annoying nevertheless. Above annoyed me a little so I left this side to start on the other. Then it happened again. I broke the decal above the rear window area in 2 places. That was it for me that day, I just left it before i screwed up anymore. A few days later I came back and fixed the broken decal to the point it doesn't look too bad. Then the rear bumper decal for this side went on and thankfully there was no problems this time. All the rear covers have had the decals applied now and all are as centre as can be. And finally the door has had all decals applied. There was ment to be 2 to make this up but due to worrying about snapping the decal in the wrong place I cut them up into 4 bits to make it easier. That's it for now but next is the bit I'm not looking forward to, the front end. Shaun
  2. Major news. Finally I have an update worthy amount of progress. So I have got to the stage now where I can start thinking about some of the lovely Ferrari Rosso paint, but before that I had to choose if I trusted the white decals on the engine fin to block out the red that will be under them at the end. I decided to play it safe and paint the white first, now comes the issue of masking off the white and given the decal isn't a straight line I got inventive. So I scanned the decals and printed the fin decal on to masking sheet just under the size of the decal, literally like 99% size, just so that gives a little wiggle room for placement. The Ink didn't like the masking sheet and took forever to dry hence the fingerprints. Then cut them out as close to the edge as possible. The car was painted In vw candy white, it's not a candy colour it's a solid white, it's the cleanest white I've used so it's now a go to colour for any white car. The masks were a little fiddly but they went on in not an embarrassing amount of time, 20 minutes isn't bad to put 2 bits of tape on right. And the red paint was prepped. And the big reveal. This was after a couple of coats of red. Just a quick note on the red, this is the best covering red I have ever used from zero paints, the closest match colour wise to this is the 06 f1 red and that took so many coats to get it done this haz taken 2 to get to this. And a couple more coats later it's done. Only left the masks on until it was touch dry so as not to leave any tape residue on the body. The masks worked perfectly. No bleeds what so ever and no jagged edges. The nose cone was done with the body and thankfully the colour match between parts is spot on. Finally I have made a start to the barge boards by panning them up In Halfords gloss black they are now ready for carbon then the white decal. That's that for now. More soon Shaun
  3. Great to see you've got on to this John. I'm not the most experienced with the multimedia side of the hobby but if you have any questions if I can answer I will. With the broken part send off an email to Mr hiro through the mfh website and he will replace it with out a worry if he can, his wife deals with the communication side of things and from what I hear she almost always gets the job done. Shaun
  4. Your keyboard keys seem to have got stuck krow 😂😂 Shaun
  5. Right so I've been working a little more on this as well as the other projects i have going at the moment. The rear body parts have both had carbon applied now and body have had a light coat of Tamiya semi gloss clear applied. There are a few odd spot that I hope with a rub down and another coat will go away. The nose cone has had white primer applied now also. And not long after the nose the main part of the body was covered in white primer. Also this picture perfectly shows why I'm making a new photo area. There are a few bits that need a little attention but hopefully it won't need any more primer and I can get on white putting some colour on. More soon Shaun
  6. Yeah I see your point sabre. I guess though if more companies used it demand and manfacturing would go up bringing overall costs down. And the point on high street garages is the same with any work really, I mean I wouldn't take my car to a crappy looking shop and expect a show quality full body recolour. Shaun
  7. Small update for this build. After letting dry for a few days I started knocking off any high points in the primer. Body. Panels. After this parts were painted in black. This is after 1 coat. 1 more just to bring up the shine will be needed. Once the paint has had around a week to fully cure I will start the long process of adding all those lovely carbon decals. Shaun
  8. I am kind of hoping that it doesn't get caught so then it would work out that the 2 average just over £40 each but if it does I'm not to worries as I've worked it all into my costs. Shaun
  9. So I've not got them yet in my hands but I have ordered 2 Tamiya Ferrari sf70h kits. 1 from hiroboy for a grand total of £50 ish and 1 from hobbyeasy in Hong Kong. I am doing a little self experiment of which one gets here first and which one works out cheaper when you take royal mail charge and vat into it if it gets caught. Shaun
  10. Jesus. Would that be because of the same company that encouraged McLaren to use it or someone else. Also we have been using carbon now for over 50 years and we have not really put it to use in many ways. I get the cost factor but stuff that was high tech in f1 10-15 years ago you can now get on a Vauxhall Corsa so why have we not developed carbon in the same way. Shaun
  11. My think now with this is they are treating it like the Porsche gt and Ferrari enzo and having it up in the 300s because that's where they sold, but I do think that 300 for a Tamiya kit is still on the high side. Hopefully this whole brexit thing can sort out the exchange rate back to pre vote levels or even better pre recession levels and I can pick one up for pennies direct from Japan. Like now the Ferrari sf70 is £48 pre order (over 50 with postage) in the UK but from Hong Kong is around £25 before post and about £31 with it. Shaun
  12. But in other good new italeri are releasing the old protar Alfa 179c in 1/12 scale. Hopefully this will stay under £100 So I can haggle the missus into getting a couple. Shaun
  13. Edit I was searching while I commented and it seems carbon fibre was used as far back as 75' on brabhams and the embassy hill cars. But McLaren was the first to use all carbon monocoque. Shaun
  14. Did Ferrari really use carbon that far back? I mean I know McLaren used it for a chassis first in the very early 80s so small things like brake ducts may have been used prior to the mp4-1, I just felt Ferrari were always behind the curve back then especially pre 87. And only the square box carbon on this is mfh and I found the same as you it does take a while to settle, even more so around curves but atleast it's quite thin and relatively strong. The main issue I have had is the shunko stuff, that is thick, brittle and oddly really doesn't like being cut. The small twill near the blade and rear floor openings is hobby design and that's been a dream to work with. Shaun
  15. It's about time for an update on this. I have been really crap at getting bits done on this and I have to stop starting more kits and get on with this. So from now I am going to work in little areas to get them done or at least ready for painting. So that being said I masked up the floor pan ready to make some carbon decals. Really gutted I am having to do this now having seen the new Tamiya version of this kit which includes near enough the full set of decals. All the colour lines are roughly where different kinds of carbon need to go. So I then made a start and instantly realised my mistake in trying to do the front bib/tea tray area in 2 halves. It ended up being 6 bits total and there are some line and wrinkles that I just couldn't avoid. Nicely the front half of the floor went a lot easier. And there we have it 1 side near enough completed. The breaks In the large twill carbon is because it's shunko carbon and is crap for anything curved or big without the strongest decal setter or alot of heat. And finally the main body section is now just about to have some white primer added to it after having to high point I the primer knocked off. Also the picture tells you exactly why I am making a new photo box as this is massive compared to anything else I've made since using the original box. More soon Shaun
  16. Granted some eBay prices were out of this world but just going off the last 1/12 rerelease compared with the original prices the price hasn't dropped as much as anticipated. Shaun
  17. Also the price for the caterham is insane I get it's a very sort after kit but over £300 Is a little like a kick in the 🥜 But love the Ferrari still just need to get my order In at hiroboy who have it for under £50 🏎🏎 Shaun
  18. You beat me to it tagy. The Ferrari is looking like a very nice kit. No engine yes but it has near enough complete carbon decals and the paint masks look very good. From how I've seen it go together I think if someone like top studio try and replicate like they did with the redbull rb6 they will have a very hard job to try and get around the monocoque mounting style also it has screws to try and get around but on the plus side the gearbox is independent unlike the rb6. Shaun
  19. I have no doubt that by 19' or 20' we will have another channel pick it up... I agree though the BBC coverage was pretty good they had all sessions live on the red button for practice so that never interfered with usual Friday morning tv, quali and the race live with no breaks was also better than sky as they still break the build up. Itv was also pretty good near the end for them, their problem was they were just dated and stereotypical of how the average person see f1. BBC brought more youth into it with Jake Humphrey host with brundle, kravits, coulthard and McKenzie all playing roles. I mean Steve Ryder and jim rosenthal were good presenters just lacked that edge to get a younger generation intrigued also most of the late 90s and 00s generation would have watched Jake on BBC kids shows and motd so he already had a following before f1 which probably helped the viewing figures. Shaun P.s. just hope Ferrari doesn't slump back again after a strong 17' as traditionally they are normally stronger in the second year of new regs.
  20. So picking this thread back up. With the LB car now finished I am only concentrating on the stock car (aswell as the other builds I have going) so just a reminder where I am. The interior is mainly done and it was just the body finish I am working on before getting bits stuck together. The body has been rubbed back with 4000 and 6000 micro mesh sheets and is now ready for a top coat. The only decal that had to go on the body was the Nissan badge. All the other GTR badges will be painted on when ready. I'm not to sure what I want to do with the wheels. I did think of changing them for some nismo spec wheels from an r34 gtr but they were a little too small and would have looked silly in the bigger openings on this car. Another thought I had was to paint these in the goldish bronze colour older gtrs had or just black them out and go semi gloss black. I can say for deffinate they won't stay silver. Right so now on to some not so good news. The hood/bonnet was dropped and paint chipped off the corner. So I've had to strip it and start again. Although it does have a nice marble type effect. Tamiya LP Paints

We don't have them in the UK just yet as far as I know which is why I may be wrong and they are airbrush ready. They are probably on a boat somewhere in the Atlantic now just about to reach the UK. Shaun
  22. Right so finally I've had a little time to concentrate on playing with plastic. So I made a start at getting the little hatch support in place. Aswell as trying to decide on the roof scoop I want in place. So the choice was this one with which kind of stands alone. Or this one that has supports to each side. Also this is the main reason my images haven't been great lately. I've been working on getting a proper photo cube set up from an old box and lights. It will look better in a few days after some paint and my card roll finally turns up from that jungle online retailer, was ment to be next day it's now 4 days late 😠😠 But in the mean time I made my mind up of what roof scoop to use, the one without sides won only due to the f1 I have already made and the next one I will be making all has the side supported one. Also you may notice the body has had a coat of primer. As has the doors and all the engine covers and hatches, basically anything I'm going to want to add carbon to at the same time. And being me I wanted a mock up. All I can say is I'm glad I didn't add more material to widen the front hatch as it will be very tight once paint and decals have been applied now. You may also spot the doors are not a great fit, these parts bend with no effort what so ever so will be a quick effort later on. A quick knock back just to take any high spots off and I can get some black paint on. More soon Shaun

    Tamiya LP Paints

From what I hear they are the paint from the spray cans and can be thinned out with lacquer thinner for airbrush use. Not used them myself yet but they should be better than the x and xf colours to brush paint also. Shaun
  24. Yeah when the mfh/DTM versions popped up I had to get one as the big mfh one is a little to big to fit in any of the display units I have so will be in a separate case, if I ever get round to finishing it, then the little version can go nicely with the other resin kits I have still to make. Ahh the brawn so that has stalled out massively for 2 reasons... 1) I got the s27 Brazil version kit and 2) the red from the tamiya plastic is very tricky to fully stop from bleeding through the sealer paint so it's been painted and stripped multiple times now so I'm just trying to figure out how to pull as much of the red pigment out from the plastic before I put the sealer on.
