Ant Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Hi All, Thought I'd share my discoveries in the paper craft section (decoupage?) from a recent visit to the local hobbycraft. First off, I found a punch wheel ... I was a fiver which, I thought was a bit steep but I decided to give it a go anyway. The results after a quick five minute play aren't too bad I think. It's easy to use, and you can get varying sizes of 'rivets' by simply varying the pressure. I tried it out on some plasticard followed by a quick wash with promodeller's dark wash ... I then spent two minutes on my scrap 'experimentation' spitfire ... Obviously you get better results by using a ruler and taking your time. The main downside to this type of riveting tool is that it makes square marks rather than round. Next up, I splashed out a tenner on a 'Coluzzle' swivel knife. I'd spotted this one before, but wasn't sure about spending the cash on yet another knife. However, after some quick experiments, I'm glad I did. It's got a tiny blade held in a plastic thing that swivels, dead simple. You hold it at 90 degrees to the cutting surface and can cut lovely flowing curves quickly and easily. I've done a couple of hard-edged camo patterns recently and wish I had had this knife. It works best on a hard surface, rather than a cutting mat. Here's what it does on 40mm tamiya tape, stuck onto a clean kitchen tile ... The thing that puts me off this knife is that the replacement blades are expensive at 3 for £10.
Takamota Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 (edited) nice idea the swivel knife.. works great.. I got This one and use These spare blades Edited March 4, 2008 by Takamota
MODeller Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 As regards your "punch wheel", I can vouch for this as being an extremely useful tool. In the trade it is known as a "pounce wheel", I spent months trying to track one down then found a cased set of 3 different sizes for £ 13.04 delivered from a signwriting supplier, Wrights of Lymm with very fast delivery. Much better than the Hasegawa Tritool which I purchased from Hobbylink and waited months for delivery although it was 1\2 Hannants price! MODeller
dswoofie Posted March 4, 2008 Posted March 4, 2008 Cool, I could do with one of them wheels. What scale is that spit wing you've used?, just trying to get an idea of spacing on the holes... I might need a couple though, I'm planning on doing a Shackleton with it!! Karl.
Ant Posted March 4, 2008 Author Posted March 4, 2008 Takamota - Doh! Looks like I've gone the silly expensive route. That's what you get for spur-of-the-moment purchases. Dswoofie - It's 1:48.
