Hi All,

Does anyone have a shot of the inside of the intakes on an FGR2? I'm looking for two things, the demarcation between the camo wrap round and the interior colour, and secondly the colour from the camouflage to the fan blades.

Any help gratefully appreciated.

Cheers

I was stationed on 17 Sqdn. Phantoms in the early 70's at Bruggen, and our FGR 2's were in the original tactical scheme of dark sea grey, dark green with light aircraft grey undersides. The intake colour was dark sea grey as far back as level with the wing leading edge, with the rest of the intake being [ dirty ] white. sometimes the leading edge of the intake had a roughish protecting paint applied, but this probably would not be noticeable in 1/48 scale. On page 23 0f the Midland counties book " military Aircraft Of The 1960s " there's an excellent pic of a 43 Sqdn. FGR 2 showing the intake colour.

I believe the USAF painted their F-4s in asimilar fashion. Hope this helps.

As an addition to Starfighter's comments, for RAF F-4s the external colour extends on to the internal ramp and at the same depth around the interior of the intake. This equates to the 'step' on both the Hasegawa and Fujimi intakes where they join on to the fuselage. This shot from the Thunder & Lightnings site shows the demarcation:

The FAA FG1s only had the intake lip painted EDSG (about 6 inches); the rest was the standard white.

BTW 43 Sqn didn't operate FGR2s until just before conversion to Tornado when the FG1 began to run out of fatigue life :nerd:.
