I remember being in my pram in North Dorset with my twin brother & looking up, seeing white streaks criss-crossing the blue sky.  It was accompanied by a rattling sound.  We often heard aircraft engines revving up in the morning especially when to cool air transmitted to sounds.

2 or 3 years later we were on the top of a red bus going to Bournemouth, & passing Ibsley Air Station, we saw aircraft moving along the taxiway.  Their huge whirling propellers made circles with yellow edges.  The noise was amazing.  We were enthralled.  We had in fact witnessed the last of the aircraft leaving before the airfield closed in 1947.  We were able to recognize a Merlin engine from a very young age!

Hello Dennis,  yes unforgetable.   The sad part is, there's very little left there now.  It's a huge lake now having had all the top-grade gravel removed.  I gather it went to make the channel tunnel with all the other millions of tons from elsewhere.

A few of us in the locality are trying to save the almost derelict control tower.......fingers crossed.

Thank you for you rwelcome,

Terry.
