Now that I have wrapped up my Group Build commitments for 2021 I have time on my hands until the next round of insanity in 2022. 19 days, to be precise. Plenty of time to work a bit on my 19 Squadron Project. For those of you who don't know, I became interested in 19 Squadron last year and have been slowly building their aircraft. It was during the Hawk STGB when I built the commemorative aircraft in the Spitfire colours. So it began...Now I have some time, etc...here's what I have to work with... I know 19 Sq didn't fly the F3. I have done a bit of research and aside from some internal differences (avionics/motor) there is no huge external differences between the F1/2 and the F3. Except the tail fin. Here are two nice profiles that I did not draw or paint myself but rather took from Wings Palette. I am not sure of their original provenance. I have resampled the images to show the copyright information as we do here on The Forum...Clavework Graphics. I think I can adjust the fin on the Airfix kit to replicate the F/2 I wish to build. The decals are from Model Alliance, Electric Lightnings Part 4. Sprue... If you look closely you can see I have already marked out what I need to do with the fin at the bottom of the image. Looks good to me! --John

Here she is...my first and, I hope, not my best or last Lightning. The WiP is here...I'm used to posting in the GB sections as these builds take up moat of my time. My first finished build of the New Year...and another addition to my 19 Sq Project. Here is what I built so far...Dolphin, Snipe, Bulldog, Hawk and Lightning. More 19 Sq to come! --John

Hi everyone, much to my annoyance, Trumpeter didn’t include the refueling probe on their Lightning’s. How do I tell which birds were issued the probe? I’m trying to build F.3 XR749/DA of the Lightning Training Flight of RAF Brinbrook. I also intend to build a 74Sdn F.6 based out of Tengah and the Airfix instructions just stick a giant question mark next to the diagram of the probe.

Having recently bought and moved into our own house, I was rather taken by the remaining Victorian fireplace in the front (spare) bedroom, complete with mantelpiece and chimneybreast. Initial plan was to source a vintage mirror, but in a flash of inspiration I recalled the 3 flying ducks that my nan had over her fireplace, flying in echelon across the chimneybreast and growing in size from small, through medium, to large. Hmmm.... Could I recreate something similar, but with model aircraft? HMMMM.... A quick search of various threads on here and elsewhere, along with a well-known auction site (and my remaining kit stash) produced 3 BAC Lightning F6 kits - a F-Toys/Gashapon 1/144 F6, a Tamiya 1/100 F6 and a Hasegawa 1/72 F6. Perfect. Plan is to build them pretty much OOB 'in flight' (as this is a 'fun' project, I'm not going the whole hog with aftermarket stuff, that's all saved for the 'serious' and growing stash of Airfix and Sword 72nd Lightnings). The trio will need to be slightly modded to enable fixing across the chimneybreast in a suitable formation (smallest lower left diagonally up to largest top right). Basic construction started last evening, with the cleaning up/fettling of parts, filling of superflouous holes and slots for the unrequired overburgers, dry-fittings and working out the best was of displaying/fixing to the wall, which entailed the decision to leave off/remove the left ventral strake and file/cut a slightly angled flat into each belly tank. One outstanding decision is colour schemes... different on each, or the same repeated thrice. I'm minded to go with different, 1 camo and 2 variants of air-superiority grey, all from the final years of 5sqn, 11sqn and the LTF (as I remember them). Current faves would be a camo 5sqn machine (XS921 AB is a contender), XS903 as 11sqn 'BA' (black fin and large eagles) and lastly XR728 'JS' with LTF markings. I'll chuck some pics up in due course, if the phone plays ball.

Has anyone ever produced decals for the early batch of prototype Lightnings. I'm specifically interested in T.4 XL628 with the light blue nose/flash and Lightning script & XG329. I am aware of the Whirlykits resin kit which does have decals for XL628, but that's now very hard to find & I'm not keen on working with resin. Just wondering. Martin
