  1. I'm obviously going to have to go through kit more carefully to spot any other probelms. One thing I did notice was mould release. I don't normally bother looking for that but it became obvious when I was looking for sink marks.

The irony of this situation is that Airfix isn't directly responsible for this mess, the mould company is. However Airfix chose them and I have the suspicion that something went wrong with the initial production of the kit.

It was supposed to be out in March so knocking it back to July was a worrying sign (and I thought so at the time). Maybe the original mould company dropped out and, at the last minute, they used a cowboy outfit just to get it done. Having seen the sink marks on the youtube reviews, there's a lot of problems surfacing with this kit.

When you look at kits like the Gannet and Jaguar, I'm left with the feeling that the Airfix aircraft dept is run by adults and the armour dept is run by infants.

  2. Mine has just arrived and generally I've avoided the worst of the sink holes, but the interior side panels of the main cargo bay are like a quilt. I can deal with that. What i can't deal with is this:

These are supposed to be the back panels, not exactly rectangular are they?

I'v had it with Airfix, i had warped parts with the Ferret and now this, how can you put out the jaguar and in the same year this kind of stuff?

Also the more I look the more basic this kit is looking

I must admit, I thought this might be the case but the stolly has been no1 on my list of kits for a long time, so I'm prepared to put up with a 'lack of detail' just to have the chance of building one.

I'm in 2 minds, I want to build it as soon as it arrives but I'm also wondering if I should hang on to see what the aftermarket guys do for it. I'm not an aftermarket fan (I prefer to stick with the box contents) but things like the exhaust screen would be better in brass.

I'm not a big fan of the Scooby but I loved the decal sheet when I saw it (which may have been 15+ years ago) so I bought the sheet. Jadlam had a sale on the Tamiya Impreza recently so i got one.

And what a great kit it is, the easiest car kit I've built (including other Tamiya kits). Sometimes you have problems with the clear parts, roll cage and bodyshell coming together but this was just a dream fit everywhere. I don't think I had to make any adjustments at all and the roll cage build it itself was just great, in fact it may be the best fitting kit I've ever built.

The wheels were changed as the decal sheet showed a different style to the kit ones, I hunted through the spares box to find the closest I could get.

Sadly the decals weren't great. I expected Studio 27 decals to be good but some of them broke up when getting them off the carrier sheet, I wouldn't have thought decal sheet age wouldn't have been a problem but maybe it was. I bodged the problem decals and the kit's ok at 2ft but get much closer and you'll start to notice.

In 2016 I posted THIS on BM, asking about the Minicraft Warning Star

And I was told the kit had... many problems, especially the radomes.

Fast forward 9 years and I saw the kit for £13 and by that time senilty had kicked in and I'd forgotton about the above post, so I bought it.

Buyers regret kicked in when I looked at the kit, @Gmat (his reply to my post) was right. There's no surface detail (scribed or raised) and as for the radomes, the dorsal radome is about 50% too thin and the belly radome is not even symmetrical.

However I decided to push on and build it with the u/c up. The dorsal radome pic shows how much I had to widen it (the white is the extra I added) and the profile is also wrong so that was altered. The belly radome isn't really visible so I shaped it as best as I could and accepted the innacuracy. The u/c bays needed a lot of filling but to be fair, the kit wasn't designed to be in flight, so that's on me.

As for the scheme, I wanted to do a USN dark grey bird but the kit only had USAF markings. I asked in 'Wanted' to see if anyone had the USN decals from a previous release of the kit, but no joy. However, by this time I'd found Phoxy Design and Print, who can print custom colour and white laser decals for a good price (A5 sheet is £11.50, A4 sheet is £16, both inc P&P). See HERE for my take/review on Phoxy's decal service in general.

I created the NAVY titles, rudder markings and white walkways in inkscape and got them printed, along with a load of other decals for the future. They worked fine and I had no issues with them, although I doubled up on the NAVY decals to get a solid white. If anyone wants the artwork for these decals I've got an SVG file.

Anyway, here it is. I was surprised how small it was compared to my 144th Nimrod and VC10 and the lack of surface detail doesn't really detract too much in this scale. But at least I now have a Warning Star in my collection so I'm happy with that. The walkway decals are probably a bit too wide but in144th they're still quite small and I didn't want to go any smaller.
