Ronnie Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Hi all, I'm currently working on a Hasegawa FG1 in 1/48, but intend to finish it as an 892 squadron machine rather that the raspberry ripple scheme provided with the kit . Can anyone confirm which type of brake parachute cone should be fitted - two are supplied, one with a hole and one with a small antenna. As far as I can see, the one with the antenna seemed to be fitted when the squared ECM extension was added to the fin. thanks in advance, Ronnie
Troffa Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Hi Ron, The Brake chute door without the tail nav light is the one you require for your 892 Machine. It was later added to the RAF FG-1 and may have been on the F-4M from day one but I would have to check.

Troffa Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Hardly Ignorance Ronnie, If hasegawa had moulded the little bleeder in clear plastic you would have known straight away what it was! Cheers, Troffa
Ronnie Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Thanks again - one final thought, though, some 892 machines had the ecm fin top, so if I make one of these (choice of fin tops in the kit !!) is it still the one without the nav light?
Troffa Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Thats a bit of a step too far for me Ronnie, I am not sure if the Modifications were carried out at the same time (Although it would make sense if both mods were carried out at a "Major" Servicing) Best bet is to check your references for RN Phantoms with the RWR fitted on the fin top and see if the chute door has a light on it. (I'll have a quick look myself) Sorry I cant be more specific. Cheers, troffa
Troffa Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Hi Ronnie, Looks like the RWR mod and Nav light mod were embodied at the same time frame! Heres a great shot of a Late FAA phantom which shows the nav light on the chute door as well as the RWR fairing. Thanks to the original photographer, Robin A. Walker. http://www.abpic.co.uk/photo/1156105/ every days a school day as they say!
Ronnie Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 Thanks Troffa - I've just looked on the Airliners.net site - loads of phantom photos, and it looks as if the nav light appears with the ecm fin but not with the original fin. I'm not too far from Yeovilton, so perhaps a trip to the museum might be worthwhile. Many thanks again,
Ronnie Posted February 5, 2010 Author Posted February 5, 2010 That's great, I now know what to do - but I'll go to Yeovilton anyway, I don't need an excuse !!
TEZ Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Lovely photo link. Only just noticed the grey and green painted stabilator. Andrew
Troffa Posted February 6, 2010 Posted February 6, 2010 Great spot on the Stabilators TEZ, I didn't notice that detail, must have been target fixated on the chute door! Never seen that depicted on a profile or on a model before. There are some great pics on the Air Britain site of the Phantom, hours of fun!
