Meteor colour-change

Recommended Posts

Hi there. When did the RAF change the Training colour schemes, for Post-War Training Aircraft,

such as the Gloster Meteor T Mk 7,& D H Vampire T Mk 11??

I am referring to the change over from Yellow Wing/Fuselage Bands to Red,(or Orange), Day-Glo Stripes,on Nose,Wing Tips,& rear Fuselage.

Also,Was the general finish still "High Speed Silver"(Aluminium Paint) overall ?? Was it Gloss,Satin or Matt ??

Do hope you can help??

Thanks. Baz.

It was High speed silver until about 1966, when Light Aircraft grey took over - so you had LACG/dayglo aircraft until the early 70s.

IIRC the dayglo scheme came in about 1960

Cheers Dave,

The reason for the query,is(if you managed to read elsewhere),i'm hoping to recreate,in 1/72 the "Chelmsford Meteor",in,rather "better-times".

(a T Mk.7 based outside Chelmsford's ATC building).

And as far as i can recall,it's been there all my Life !! (i'm now 47)

And i remember it way back painted,in HSS/Dayglo strips,which were fading,even then !!

Nowadays after 50,or so,years sitting outside, the elements have taken their toll on it,but i THINK the ATC are trying to repaint it(?)

Currently it's in a Faded-dull Silver,with Yellow bands,& unfinished,(type-B!!) fuselage Roundels....with crude "stencils".

i'll eventually try & take some pics.

Cheers Barrie.

It started orange (when paint) but went redder when it changed to adhesive tape - if you do a search I asked exactly the same question a while back!

Hello,Dave.

Forgive me,if the subject's been a repeated one,i'm still fairly "new" here.....Have pity on me. ;-)

Seriously,i THINK,(considering the age of the "Meat-Box",in question),Orange,Day-Glo,Paint looks a likely bet.

i'll keep watching this space.....Cheers Baz.

P.S....Could You point me towards the original article, please,Dave.

No worries, I was just being lazy to avoid searching myself. Didn't mean to indicate you had missed some life changing thread !! :speak_cool::winkgrin:

You are right the origial D-G Orange DID fade very quickly!!

i did remember the Meteor, back in the 70's with a rather faded orange strips.

Also i found my old tin of Humbrol Day-Glo orange,(hope it STILL works??)

Pity they deleted it !!

Cheers Baz.

Hello Dave

That is a good link there, especially reading through the whole page. It would seem that the "Aircraft Spotter's" cannot agree amongst themselves as to what they are! I remember that at Open Days, at about 0600hrs, they would be three deep and all with their little step ladders to get "A Good Shot", all waiting to get in when we opened the gates to the public.

Life never changes!

Cheers

Jeff

Hi,with regards to my,extremely helpful,chat with the FORMER C.O,of Chelmsford,Sqn Ldr A R Tyrell,(i thank him enormously,for his help,& time.)

He showed me a picture of WH132,when it first arrived at Chelmsford ATC,in July 1966*(surely as pictures go,that's the "Holy Grail"....!!)

Beautiful information.

The Meteor in question was finished, originally,in the Official,(1959) RAF trainer scheme,of H.S.Silver,

with Orange Day-Glo Nose,Rear Fuselage/Tail Fin,and the Wing-Tip,& Leading edges.

It was,individually,coded, "J".(i had a feeling,insofar,that WAS the case.)

So there you go..... Thanks to everyone who's helped me,(that's YOU guys !!),so far.

All the Official Drawings and Photo's are massively helpful,to my project.(now, onto building the Xtrakit T.Mk7)

Of course, any more info will be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks. Baz.

*Didn't "something else" happen at that time,(July '66) ?? Big Lol !!
