  1. Lamborghini Huracán Evo (55007) 1:43 Airfix The Huracán is the 4-wheel drive replacement for the successful Gallardo, carrying on with a similar design language, and was released in the first half of 2014, its name derived from a courageous bull from the 19th century, which was named Hurricane, and bulls are a common theme in the names of Lamborghini cars, which may have something to do with their logo, possibly? Of course it does. Its power plant is a heavily modified Audi V10 engine that has been bored out to 5.2 litres and outputs a staggering 600+bhp from its mid-chassis position. It achieves this amazing power without the need for a turbo- or super-charger, instead using direct fuel injection AND multi-point fuel injection, taking advantage of the benefits of both styles of fuel delivery. With its low-slung, aerodynamic bodyshell that cuts through the air easily, it can go from a standstill to 60mph in 3.1 seconds on a good day with a talented driver, so you’d better be able to afford a new set of tyres every couple of months. As is common with many of Lamborghini supercars, the development of the design doesn’t stand still after release, and various special editions are the result, usually pushing the power and driving experience to extremes as time goes by. The EVO was introduced in 2019 with the engine for the Performante that brings an extra 20bhp and improved torque figures that gets it to sixty 0.2 second quicker, which doesn’t sound like much, but on the track or at traffic lights that will make a difference, providing the driver isn’t inexperienced and stacks it into the next available obstacle by breaking traction with uncontrolled acceleration. The changes extend to the exterior too, with more aggressive styling, and an upgraded computer that adds new feature to the driving experience, sensing which driving mode will best suit the conditions and mood of the driver by monitoring the inputs and sensors to make its decisions. Rear-wheel steering has also been included with the facelift, which Jeremy Clarkson would say gives the impression whilst driving that the car no longer wants to kill you, an accusation he has levelled at previous Lamborghini offerings over the years. The Kit This is another brand-new tooling in 1:43 from Airfix’s new range that seems to expand every month of late. The jagged Lambo arrives in a small end-opening box with a header-hanger for vertical display, and as it is a starter set, it also includes four thumb-pots of acrylic paint, a small tube of plastic cement, and a #2 paintbrush with its man-made bristles protected by a clear cylindrical shroud. The kit consists of a bodyshell and two sprues in white styrene, following the “no outer runners” maxim for this range, and a clear sprue in the same style. Only one part had left the sprue, but check your bag before opening and disposal, just in case. The small decal sheet and instruction booklet printed in colour complete the package, and if you were wondering where the painting guide was, it’s on the back of the box. We’ve come to expect excellent detail from this range, and this kit is no different, having a ton of it moulded into every part that should result in a highly detailed kerbside model of this sleek supercar. These starter sets also hold the modeller’s hand by suggesting locations for glue in yellow, and providing a sprue diagram at each step that points out the location to the builder, and as the build progresses the number of parts shown on the sprues reduce too, which is a time-saving assistance whether you’re a novice or not. Construction begins with the floor pan, painting the suspension parts and adding the rear axle without gluing it. The rear arches are then glued over the axle, locking it in place, while the front wheel arches are found moulded into the interior floor, which includes the cabin floor and a well-detailed moulding of the engine that will be seen through the rear window. A centre console is installed with a decal between the seat positions, painting most of the interior black, including the door cards that fit onto the sides of the floor. Moving back to the floor pan, the front axle is emplaced without glue, and it too is trapped in place, this time by the interior assembly, to which the two body-hugging seats are fitted, followed by the dashboard that has the instrument binnacle, steering column with flappy-paddles, and the wheel added before it is lowered into a gap in front of the door cards, which were handily marked L and R to ease construction. The bodyshell is needed soon, but it must be prepared with extra parts, despite looking almost ready for use. Side skirts with intakes are fixed under the body’s sides, adding front grille, which consists of two parts, one of which is clear to depict the light clusters and has both headlights moulded-in. The splitter plate is installed at the rear, then the body is returned to upright briefly to apply the rear spoiler and twin wing mirrors, painting the mirror surfaces with the shiniest silver you have. All the cabin glazing is moulded on a carrier that glues into the roof from within, fitting the bumper while it is inverted again, then the two assemblies are mated after the glue has cured, lowering the rear first and clipping the front into position last. To complete the model, the wheels must be added in each arch, starting with separate discs and moulded-in callipers, as they will be seen through the spokes of the wheels when complete. The alloy wheels are each a single part, over which the tyres slip, coming to a stop on a flange on the inner edge so that they sit correctly on the rim, but remembering to paint the back edge of the tyre in a suitable rubber colour after dealing with the seams if you feel the need. As is usual with this series of models, the decals are shown being applied on the last step of the instructions, but this information is also repeated on the colour profiles on the back of the box. Markings The Huracán is shown painted in silver on the profiles, but you can paint it any colour you like, or stick to the colours available from the manufacturer. The decal sheet is small, but not as small as depicted in the picture below, as I have removed some of the empty space to save your scrolling/swiping finger. From the box you can build the following: Decals are by Cartograf, which is a guarantee of good registration, sharpness and colour density, with a thin gloss carrier film cut close to the printed areas. The individual decals are very small by necessity, so take care with handling them, as they could easily be lost on your finger, brush or a cotton bud. Conclusion My one complaint is why didn’t they use this product code A55007 for the recent Aston Martin DB5 for that James Bond connection? That aside, it is a gorgeous model of this angular beauty, and has the Lamborghini seal of approval on the back of the box in the shape of a holographic sticker, with a brief word about the logos and their copyrights. It’s a model that really wants to be built. Highly recommended. Review sample courtesy of
