A typical Sword kit. But you're wrangling it together in tip top fashion. Keep up the outstanding work.

    Thanks! We are plowing onward.

And here she is in her current state - canopy fitted, with a first layer of Dark Gull Gray for the inside of the canopy frames followed by a first layer of BS 641 Dark Green:

Interesting to see other people's take on this kit. I found it a plastic whittlers dream, as in parts need working on to fit. Especially those camera windows. I also gave the whole kit a good re-scribing. Good luck with yours!

Thanks! It is indeed a kit that takes some effort. I found that the wings had a tendency to assume a marked dihedral when glueing them in a snug position, so I had some repositioning and filling of the resulting gaps to do. There is a small pin on the uppper inside surfaces that is meant to go in a corresponding dimple in the fuselage, but I found that to interfere so I cut the nib off. Even then I had to put in some effort.

But hey, it's a Sword kit. Putting in effort is half the fun.

Anyway. After a somewhat frustrating weekend weatherwise (see my general thread for a good laugh) I managed to get her here:

Wings attached in more or less the proper attitude, windscreen / quarterlights put in place, camera windows refitted and a quick bit of Dark Gull Gray for the correct shade on the inside of the canopy frames and a light bit of preshading prior to applying more camouflage.

I really want to build another one but in a highly polished aluminium! Yes I know I am mad!

Oh dear. I have an aluminium Dutch one planned as well, so that makes two of us (but first I need to finish those in this GB!).

STOP THE MADNESS! Oh wait, we do this for fun.  :)

  3. Well, that was a weekend with two faces, airbrushwise..!

I had finally claimed some Me Time on Sunday ("No obligations, my dear family, dad needs to get his airbrush on!")

The good news, at least it wasn't pouring with rain yesterday. The bad news, it was quite windy. Normally not so much an issue, since the back yard is quite sheltered on three sides. Guess what the direction of the wind was...

So, at first I managed to get a decent layer of light gray on the bottom of the Italeri Flash and some Dark Gull Gray on the canopies. Then all hell broke loose - both boxes and complete models literally blew off the table ending up in the yard (luckily without too much damage). I even managed to lose my 0,4mm nozzle, never to resurface again. So with some choice words ("Sorry, neighbours") I admitted defeat.

However, after dinner, at around 19:00-ish, the wind calmed down and I decided for a rematch. And Cthulhu be praised, I finally managed to get some paint down.

More details to follow in the specific build threads, but I could not resist a thunderly family portrait:

The RF-4B is carrying wing tanks. They had an entirely different mission that required extra fuel.

Also, normally USMC RF-4B's flew their mission from land. Wing tanks were practically never carried when flying Phantoms from carriers, the fuel sloshing around in the wing tanks would create all sorts of, eh, 'interesting' CoG effects on launch.

I'd prefer the Revell 1/144 version.  The 1/72 version would only fit in the south wing of my mansion on Lake Como.  You know, the one next to Clooney's home.

If I buy one, at least I'll have something to live out of after my girlfriend evicts me.  :)

the centreline tank would be jettisoned before firing the front Sparrows

At least, that was the proscribed method. During combat over SEA a number of crews forgot to get rid of the centreline tank before popping off a Sparrow in the heat of the moment, which must have led to a fair amount of localised clenching.
