  1. looks great winenut! Cant wait to see it in person in the cabinet of glory... after a few beers that of course - then it will look even better
  2. Not done a lot for a while, but lots of "pondering". Keen to get stuck back into it soon!
  3. That's ok, lots of other names out there.... Rory, Roo, Tex.... I'm sure you will find one to suit. Once it arrives we could wet the head at the Alma?!
  4. Are you going to find out what it is? Thought of names yet?!
  5. Cheers Mate! Yours is a wee ripper too wine nut! they make a good couple!! My head is already big from exploding with frustration trying to get damn rib stitching and tape on the rudder of the wirraway
  6. I am quietly chuckling away about where this thread has gone winenut! By the way, the plane is looking great!
  7. Thanks Panoz, That is a great help. When you mentioned Pentland, i googled it and found the book on Wirraway markings and found a copy on ebay in australia.... so thanks that will help a lot! Wow Julien, that walkaround is fantastic! I plan on doing a fairly scale cockpit on the 1:7 scale model so this will help a lot! Dave, I have used WEM paints before and actually already have the RAAF sky blue. I have ordered a tin each of their foliage green and earth brown. Im actually going to be spraying with thinned down ordinary household latex paint so i will use these tins to do colour patches so dulux can match! Using this kind of paint in the RC scale field is quite popular as it is far more economical than buying 10 tiny tins and the results are really good. Thanks Troy, i will look into Aussimodeller and see if anyone there can help! Cheers all for your help, and if anyone else has anything to add feel free to chip in! Sandy
  8. Hi all, Some of you may have followed a thread previously on the Hurricane my grandfather flew in Burma for 11 RAF squadron. Now that that build is done and dusted i am onto the next of the "planes my grandfather flew" series which is a CAC Wirraway he flew in Deniliquin, NSW, Australia at 7 SFTU. I have got some photos from his own album as well as others from the net i have found of planes i know he flew. Any information you could provide on what colour scheme these planes would most likely have been painted would be great... Here are the two photos i have from his album... Here are some others from the net of planes i know he flew (from his logbook)... Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated! Cheers Sandy
  9. Winenut, your lovely wife told me that "screams of anguish" don't correctly portray the actual words of the night!! Surprised we weren't woken up at the time! Great build overall though mate, looks great and great recovery. To make you feel better, when gravity wins on my planes the result is not so pretty!
  10. Looking good winenut! Here's a link to my latest craziness!! http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2173691 Ill be following yours with interest!!
  11. I thought i had finished with the hurri, but i was not happy with how the roundels and fin flashes turned out as i had rubbed them back with fine grade steel wool to take the sheen off and to weather them slightly.... it certainly weathered them and took the sheen off, but also took the colour off as well - the dark blue turned royal blue and the pale blue was virtually white. I decided to overpaint the roundels and fin flashes after masking, but with the WBPU surface, the enamel paint went quite cloudy. SO, i carfully pulled the vinyl decals off, did some repairs where they pulled some paint off, remasked and sprayed the roundels and fin flashes with the two blue colours, then on the weekend covered them with 3 coats of the matte WBPU and finally am really happy with how they turned out. For future builds i will definitely go straight to painting on the roundels as they look much better that way. The nose art from Callie which is a vinyl cut decal looks AWESOME!!
  12. That last photo looks awesome nut! Can't wait to see them both together. I agree... A great project to be involved in!
  13. Finally finished the "re-finishing"!! 3 coats of WBPU matte coat applied with a spray gun which worked a treat. Here is the before and after shots. I will post some more photos and video once i remaiden. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions along the way - it has definitely spurred me on! Before... After...
  14. Thanks Richard, much appreciated mate! Papa came over for lunch today, so we had a bit of a photo shoot with myself and him with the Hurri. He was suitably impressed with the detail of the Hurri. Winenut also popped over from next door to meet my grandfather and show him his little 1/72 scale Hurri nearly completed and he thought that was great too!
  15. Ok, so i was so appalled at how the canopy angle was so wrong on the photos that i went down to the shed, prized the canopy off, then cut a good 3 to 4 mm off the front of the canopy frame to get that sitting down a bit further, then reglued it back on - need to do a bit of filling and touchup painting, but MUCH happier now.... still not perfect, but much better
  16. Some more minor finishing details completed... installed the instrument panel and gun sight, then attached the canopy. Im not very happy with the overall look of the canopy as the rails are too wide, and the angle the canopy sits is way off in regard to the fuselage. Main reason for this is the turtle deck behind the canopy is sloping down - i may just have to build another hurri to sort that one out! I also painted some black / gray on the wing fairing and where the canopy slide would have been. I was in a bit of o hurry to get all this done as i have my grandfather coming over tomorrow for lunch so was quite keen to get most of it finished to show him - might get some pics of him and his hurri! Overall, the only improvements i would have made to the build would have been to glass the front fuselage to make the wing fairings nicer, and to improve the canopy area. Other than that i'm pretty happy with how it is looking - there is always room for improvement.
  17. Nearing the end of the build now.... A big thanks to John Morgan from RC Groups who kindly gave me some very handy tips on exhaust weathering and exhaust stains, as well as information on matte finishes. I have pretty much followed his advice on what i have done. I had already sprayed the exhaust a metal type colour, so the next step was to use brown and randomly spray an uneven pattern that would still let some of the metal colour show through, then do the same with black, but much much lighter. For the exhaust stain i just used the matt black (actually gun metal as this is slightly gray and has a nice dull effect) and used the air brush with a fine needle (0.3mm) and sprayed very thinly. I also made the top of the seat and painted that the interior cockpit green colour and fitted that through a slit in the false floor. Also i made up a gun sight out of random spare parts i had - as this sits above the dash and clearly visible on the real plane from the outside i thought i have to put this detail in. Its a bit rough, but does the job. I went to the local Art supply place here in Adelaide and looked at what they had in matte finishes. They had a product called Crystal Kote by Helmar in a rattle can, but i decided on a Poly urethane matte vanish that is designed for indoor and outdoor and provides more protection for the paint than the rattle can. I think it will be similar to the floor polish/wax you can get at the hardware store, but they come in only Satin and Gloss. I sprayed a bit on the underside and it worked a treat - didnt change the colour much, but provides a matte surface which covers the paint and weathering.
  18. You are too kind winenut! Being able to play 3 chords hardly classes me as a good guitarist!!!! but we do have lots of fun though...and maybe too much to drink.... and maybe upset the wives from time to time!! Winenut on the other hand is an AWESOME drummer having played in a band that performed at Australia's Big Day Out festival ... no small feat.
  19. Just looks a bit weathered Nut! Papa did have his canopy shot off if you remember?!! Ive been posting this story on "RC groups" and asked one of the master builders about exhaust stains and matte finishes. i have taken a screen shot of what he had to say - will probably give this a go i think.
  20. Need some help from all you modellers out there! How should I weather the exhaust stack and simulate the exhaust stains down the side of the fuse? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  21. Thanks winenut! I forgot i had that footage... Yours is looking the goods - i reckon we have a pretty close match with the camo pattern. We will have to get together soon and have a play round with printing some of your custom decals too. Let me know when you are free
  22. I decided not to go for any finish coats. After the wet sand with the steel wool the colours came out much more uniform as it took out any of the more shiny bits and gave it a nice "sun bleached" look. So i bit the bullet and put all the decals on, and to say i am happy with them is an understatement!! they came out superbly. Gave them a bit of a rub back to take the shine off them and make them look weathered. I then got a really soft pencil and went over all the panel lines, then wiped over with a cloth to smudge them a bit. Came out really subtle yet effective - no need for an acrylic wash now Played around with the radiator to make that look more scale too. Finally getting there now....
  23. Just came across this video I had of the hurricane flying at my local site a few years back (before the overhaul!!) it's a cheap keychain camera mounted on the nose. That is my grandfather at the end watching his Buccaneer fly! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaVW4slOUQc&feature=youtu.be
  24. some more progress on the Hurri. Ive been busy painting with my new 2 way airbrush - its the first two way one i have owned so a bit of a steep learning curve! A few mistakes along the way, but nothing that could not be fixed. I masked off the bottom sky blue colour and decided to freehand the upper camo. I got a kind a sunbleached look by using fine grade steel wool and doing a sort of wet sand. In one of the photos i wet the wing to show what it will look like after i spray some clear gloss floor polish on - it blends the colours in well and will make a nice platform to do an acrylic sludge wash to emphasize the panel and rivet detail.
  25. Ok, now have the cowl lip finished!! Heres how i did it... I did cut out some 6mm depron, then sanded to shape before gluing onto the cowl. further shaping once glued on, then a few coats of household undercoat then sanded smooth. Applied 25g cloth and a couple of coats of epoxy before priming and sanding... Next on the agenda is to mask off the underside and apply some preshading to the fuse before starting the upper camo...
