    Looks really good Gaz.

I tend to take the easy way on the Caunter colours and use pre mixed ones from MRP which are excellent paints but a little expensive but your colours look spot on so maybe next time a will dig out Mike Starmer's mix.

I'm in the process of painting my Matilda at the moment but I've gone for the SCC No2/No1 brown scheme.

    Wayne.

    Thanks Wayne

I try to use Tamiya acrylics wherever I can, they spray nicely and i can use them to brush paint smaller parts as well. Also my local shop stocks them, so they're easily available to me.  However what I do end up with are pots of paint mixes which just encourage me to use them again.  So maybe there'll be an M3 Stuart, Caunter scheme in the future :hmmm:.

Good luck with your Matlida, I look forward to seeing it :)

Lovely tank, well done caunter. These Mike Starmer recipes are awesome,  it keeps the paint stash modest and at the same time you learn how to make the most of them. When it comes to masking tape, Tamiya would be my weapon of choice too. Great work,

    Cheers,

    Ernst

    Thanks Ernst.

I totally agree with you about the paint and the tape.

    Fantastic job, especially counter camo!

Working on this same kit at the moment. Wish it turns out at least close to this one 🙂

Thanks Nenad, I look forward to seeing yours in the RFI section. :)

    Thanks Gaz!

That was one of those builds where I tried out a few different techniques mostly in the way I used oils and pastles. I do use them  in a more restrained way on my aircraft builds but here I could go to town.

My main interest is WW1 aircraft and I am so tempted to build a WNW's kit but long ago I started on a collection of 1/48 aircraft. I switch to British 1/35th armour for a break and to give my eyes a rest.

    Cheers Wayne.

Ps. Sadly the Mille is long gone. Maybe next year I will get another bike. RSV4. 😁

I think it looks like I should go back and try oils again ;).  I experimented with the water soluble stuff on the Matilda while clinging to the comfort blanket of it being easily removable if I got it too wrong.  Many ways to skin a cat I guess, and it's fun to try one's hand at different methods.  As John said above, your tracks and other bare metal parts are a standout, along with the finish on the wooden blocks.

I know what you mean about giving your eyes a rest; my tankfest is a break from my first attempt at a 1/350 ship where pretty much everything is being done under a magnifier. :blink2:

RSV4 - go for it ! I was looking at a V4 Tuono the other week. Fantastic bike, it's Italian, but not red though. ;)

    Cheers

Lovely job you've done there.  Weathering is nice and light, but enough to give it some character.

And don't worry about phone pics, its how most of us do it these days!  The pics look fine.

Thanks Nev.  Yeah the old camera phones are pretty good nowadays; it's the lack of depth that gets me.

Fantastic Matilda, love the subtle weathering

Thanks Rich, maybe subtle should be my modelling handle. :)

Now I just have to wait for the next one to arrive. :waiting:

  4. Evenin’ All

Hot on the heels of my Panther last month, here’s my second big armour thingy!

    • The kit - Tamiya’s 1/35 Matilda Mk II/IV (35300). An example from the 42nd Royal Tank Regiment, which formed part of the 1st Army Tank Brigade, and served in the Western Desert Campaign in North Africa in 1941-2.  Built OOB, it virtually fell together, except for the link’n’length track, sections of which kept falling off !
    • Paint – Tamiya acrylics mixed to Mr Mike Starmers’s recipies for the Caunter scheme.
    • Weathering – A lumpy, sludge mix of Humbrol weathering powder for the mud. Tamiya Weathering Master set A (mostly) and (a bit of) D, and a lot of use of watercolour pencils, especially for the dust and sand deposits on the decks and turret.  A light dusting of XF57 Buff to finish off.
    • Distractions – Tank Chats.  In my research I discovered the The Tank Museum’s Tank Chats on Youtube.  Really good watching for a tank noob like myself.  I’m on #80 Black Prince as I write this.

Here it is, I hope you like it.

Apologies for the use of my phone camera. I wasn't too happy with the indoor photos for showing a true colours so I took some outdoors in the desert-like sunshine to see how they'd turn out.

So, I’m still enjoying my foray into armour subjects, they’re certainly different to what I’m used to.  My next big decision will be, do I stick with 1/35 or do I swap to 1/48 so that they’ll sit comfortably among my aircraft models ?

While I ponder that, I’ve placed an order with my local for a Tamiya 1:35th scale - Panzer Mk.III Ausf.L – 35215…….meanwhile my stash is bulging with neglected aircraft projects. Ah well.

    Thanks for looking

    Cheers

Thanks, I found that unlike with aircraft, applied “mud” can hide a multitude of sins👍

I know what you mean. A bit of light weathering takes on a whole new meaning around these parts of the forum .  I'm still learning, and I'll be coming back to this build for inspiration if build an M16.

  6. Hi Ian,

Thanks for the links, I don't do Facebook but I can get some access to that group.  Looks like there are some local aviation legends on there, and a couple of good videos to finish watching as well.  I'll be visiting again in the future.

The kit looks typical resin, a painful but necessary evil if you want the finished article.  At least it's smaller than the VC10 I did a couple of years ago, and the Belfast I've got on the SofD at the mo.......1/48 should be manageable (hopefully).

I'll have to mull this one over for a bit. I'm on a rum of armour subjects at the mo :)

    Cheers

Nice job on that Gaz, the tanker on the back is a nice touch to give some scale, they were a big brute.

    Steve.

Hi Steve.  Thanks, yeah, I hadn't realised how big it was.  It pretty much dwarfs the Matilda, that it almost looks like they're in 2 different scales.  Of course, I guess I might have to get myself a bigger Allied vehicle to go with the Panther, and then a smaller Axis one to go with the Matlida.  Oh the joys of OCD !

Not as much of a headache as my bro got! He went exploring the Prince of Wales wreck using re-breather gear, entering the ship through a massive hole blown out of the bottom of the hole by torpedos.

Yikes.  Cool story that thankfully your brother was able to relay himself  !  I toured around HMS Belfast on a visit to back to Blighty last October; it was my first time aboard anything like that and yeah, what a claustrophobic rabbit warren.  It was 'interesting' navigating my  way around that place while dockside, let alone under water in the dark, with everything upside down.....and running out of air.  I don't like deep water at all.

    Hi Gaz,

That's more like it. Have you given the Panther a coat of the same? Or is it just that it looks better when it's not photographed in bright sunlight?

    Rearguards,

    Badder

Nope, the Panther is as it was before.  The sunlight was quite harsh for that first lot of photos; it has a slight sheen but definitely not as glossy as it came across in the pictures. I thought I'd have a go at using natural lighting and background for a change.
