  1. History

From 1954 until 1964, the Royal Netherlands Naval Air Arm (MLD) operated three Sikorsky helicopters. Besides their registration numbers, also names were painted on one side of the clam door (Jezebel-Salome-Cleopatra).

Assigned to either the Naval Air Station “Valkenburg” (search and rescue), or the aircraft carrier “Karel Doorman” for plane guard duties during launch and recovery operations. It has to be mentioned that they did save a large number of persons and pilots from drowning in all types of weather conditions. Being single engined and slightly under powered, they were unreliable. From the three helicopters, two crashed and one made it to the aviation museum.

It was here that I saw the S-55 for the first time. I decided to build one in scale. Second hand I found the mentioned Revell kit many years ago on the shelf of a gas station in a little village for the price of one pound fourthy.

    The Kit

According to the mold, it was originally produced in 1959 (USA). It had decals from Belgium Sabena and the RNLN.

I completed the whole construction almost straight from the box. I used the Waldron punch and die set, together with Evergreen to slightly update the cockpit. For sound proofing the cabin and the area directly behind the pilots, I used thin foam. This you can find in the supermarket. When you order sliced Dutch cheese it gets packed on this material. It has (sometimes) already the punctured sound proof structure on it.

Airbrushed with xtra colour medium grey and sky. Decals from the box were applied with the help of set and sol. The whole model was finished off with a thin layer of Glitsa parquet varnish. (70% methylated spirit and 30% Glitsa.) This prevents the decals from discolouring.

The showcase is manufactured by ERTL and the street is from Evergreen.

  2. Hello All,

    I have just ordered:

Postal Red / Signal Red / RAF Recue Yellow from Xtracolor and Humbrol 209 Gloss Fire Orange

(I hope the Humbrol is available) It is easier to get Xtracolor than Humbrol from my supplier in The Netherlands.

If I can help you with anything from The Netherlands, let me know!

    Thanks alot.

    Dirk

  3. Hello Selwyn,

    Thanks for your response.

So for the RAF yellow I use the Xtracolor 'RAF Rescue Yellow."

This implies that Navy yellow and RAF yellow on the airframes are the same color?.

Hello Pat C and Heloman 1,

    Thanks for your response.

The red nose and the choices between Postal Red/Signal Red and Day-Glo.

Would you be so kind to explain the tin numbers from Xtra or Humbrol or.....

    With regards,

    Dirk (Orion)

  4. Excellent done.

The HAS 1 in the dump yard is a winner.

The HU5 in RN Rescue colors always stands out on display.

Looking forward to the end result in diorama.

I realized that the Rescue services are contracted out to civy street.

Will there be any colorful choppers left in the RN/RAF inventory.

    Regards,

    Dirk (Orion)

  5. Dear Wessex Specialists,

My last question was in regards to the yellow rotor blade on the SAR Wessex. In reading the total result of my question (3 pages), I have come to the conclusion that BM is the best site for starting a serious discussion. I was amazed at the knowledge among the members. Thanks for the effort you all put in there. This knowledge I will use, if questioned by modelers who think they know it all!

This time, I continue with the colors of the airframes in general.

In particular the RED on the RN frames and the YELLOW on the RAF frames.

To start with the rescue yellow, does Xtracolor RAF Rescue Yellow represent the right color yellow, or are we differing of opinions on this matter? Or even do we mix to get the right yellow result?

Continuing to the Yellow and Red on the RN Wessex:

The (Golden) Yellow on the HAS 1 and HAS 3 must be a mix of colors. It is a very warm Yellow to look at.

Any suggestions to get the right color on this matter?

The Red on the nose and middle fuselage, would Xtracolor Red Insignia compare, or is there something better on the market?

    Highest Regards,

    Dirk (Orion)

  6. Hi Britmodeller,

This is my version, of the Severn Class Lifeboat 'Stornoway"at its base.

The ship is moored to the jetty that is able to go up and down with the tide. Taking fresh water and electricity from the pontoon facility.

Weather forecast is bright, sunny and windstill.

Not much to do for the "Preiser"crew.

The landing platform can take the RN/RAF Wessex or Sea King for joint ops. at sea.

    Wessex 1/72 is under construction.

    Regards,

  7. Hi Britmodellers,

Thanks for all the nice comments.

Marlin lots of succes with the Etendard. Looking forward to see it ready for inspection.

I checked the word "BAN" in the excellent book from Santiago Rigas. Correct , it should be "BAM"

The abbreviation meaning:Base Aérea Militar (BAM) and not Base Aérea Naval. (BAN)

    Thanks for that Louis Pacheco.

    Regards,

    Dirk / The Netherlands.

  8. Hi Britmodeller,

    My second contribution.

The Super Etendard from the Argentine Navy.

Armed with the famous AM39 Excocet. After the latest data information in regards to target, this missile is released from the AC at approx. 45 km from the target.

Full information on target acquisition and flight profiles can be found in the book "Wings of the Malvinas" from Santiago Rivas.

    Highest Regards,

    Dirk

  9. Hi Britmodellers,

In recent finished Wessex models, I have observed one of the main rotorblades to be sprayed completely yellow on the top.

I would like to ask the Wessex specialists to please inform me on the colorcode of the main rotorblades (top and underside) and the tailrotor from RN and RAF birds.

4+ publication is not clear on the matter.

    Your help is much appreciated,

    Dirk
