  1. The British manufactured swept-wing interceptor Folland Gnat made its first flight in May, 1955. Thirteen Gnats of the single-seat variant F.1 were purchased by the Finnish Air Force, two planes by the Yugoslav Air Force and forty Gnats by the Indian Air Force. In India several hundred more Gnats of different configuration were manufactured under license by the Hindustan Aeronautics Industries Limited with the name of HAL Ajeet. These fighters were in active use until 1991. The Indian Gnats were also successfully used in active combat roles during the Indo-Pakistani wars of 1965 and 1971. The Finnish Air Force received its first Gnats F. Mk I in July 1958. Two of the the thirteen planes were photo recce versions. The Gnats were in active use in the FAF until 1972. A couple of years ago I bought the old 1:48 scale Aeropoxy resin kit of the Gnat F. Mk I . It was the only kit available of the single-seat variant in that scale. The kit IMHO, was very challenging to build, to say the least. The parts were very thick, the panel lines were deep grooves and the smaller parts like the landing gear, the wheels, and the ejector seat were poorly molded and messy. Well, having said that I anyway decided to embark on the struggle. I first bought the 1:48 twin-set Gnat T.1 kit of Airfix to be able to take advantage of that kit's more accurate and detailed parts. After having used a lot of putty and sanding sticks the fuselage and wings started to look ok. The landing gear wells had to be totally rebuilt but with various operations I finally got them more or less right. The canopy of the kit was a vacuformed part that fitted the cockpit quite well and the Airfix parts sat surprisingly well in their rebuilt places. The painting of the model was then quite straightforward. The FAF Gnats wore the standard British camo of Dark Sea Grey, Dark Green and High Speed Aluminium. For those colours I used Humbrol enamels 116 (DGR), 164 (DSG) and Tamiya AS-12 Bare Metal Silver (HSA). I ordered the excellent FAF Gnat markings from Arctic Decals. My model depicts the Gnat coded GN-101. She was the first one to arrive in Finland and she was christened "Kreivi von Rosen" or Count von Rosen in English. He was a Swedish count that in 1918 donated the first aircraft, i.e. one Thulin typ D plane to the newly independent Republic of Finland. His lucky charm was a blue swastika which subsequently became the official Finnish Air Force national insignia (thus not related to the later Nazi swastika) Finally, after having attached the decals I airbrushed the whole model with acrylic VMS satin. For the minor details I used Vallejo and Revell colours.
