I have a number of Wingnut Wing kits in my stash, some that I purchased back in 2010-2015 when they were first released. I’ve decided to stop hoarding and start building (I’m not getting any younger!). I’m about mid-way through a build of the excellent AMC DH.9 kit and have encountered major cracking/ disintegration of the large 64” roundel wing decals, probably due to the age of my kit (9 years?). I’ve resolved to mask and paint these large roundels, the smaller decals seem to be usable so far if I’m really careful with them. I’ve built four previous WNW kits with no decal issues but they were much newer kits.
My question is this: Has anyone else had these issues with their 8-12 year old WNW Cartograph decals and are there any techniques that can be done to avoid decal cracking? I’ve tried brushing/ spraying acrylic coatings / decal salvage solution onto other old decals (not WNW) and have not found either method very effective in preventing cracking. Masking/ painting my roundels will hopefully fix my current DH.9 but I’m worried about my other old WNW kits that have more complex (un-maskable) decals such as some of the German aircraft. I welcome any/ all ideas/ suggestions, thanks! John
