  1. This was a figure i had my eye on for a while, straight away he really looked like he's sitting in front of a fire and i liked the idea of doing some object source lighting as if he's sitting in a dark room bathed in the warm light of the fire. I put it off because the idea of an OSL paint job seemed too challenging but after getting a few figures under belt i did some research on object source lighting abd decided to give it a go. So from one angle he has the fire and from the opposite direction i did some moonlight highlights as if its shing on him from a window. The whole thing had a base coat of vallejo dark sea blue and then i airbrushed mephiston red from the direction of the fire to get a start on the osl effect and show what parts are catching the light. From there i built up the highlights with shades of orange saving the yellow firvthe bits closest to the fire or metal which will be very reflective. Had great fun doing this, here's a link to the WIP:- And here are the final pics: IMG_20241115_200935 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_200952 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201001 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201012 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201019 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201027 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201152 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201200 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201226 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_200843 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201410 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241115_201351 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Thanks for everyone who commented/reacted in the WIP I always appreciate the interest. 2. After a bit of a final push I've got this guy sorted and have taken some final photos. This is a 3D printed figure that is actually called The Cleric, but as soon as I saw it i just loved the idea of him casting a spell the power of which was causing his cape to billow out. I've painted it as if the head of his staff is the main light source, to give the impression of the magic lighting the scene, and had a real blast painting it. Thanks to everyone who commented/reacted in the WIP, always makes a project more fun! Speaking of which here is a link to it:- Here are the final pics, I included one daylight shot at the end as I think it gave a slightly better impression of the colours I used. 3. Finally got a chance to start this, I got this figure before I finished the last one but between the weather and work just haven't had a chance to get going until yesterday. The figure is actually called The Cleric and its from the Flesh of Gods series of printable miniatures, I really loved the animated pose with his cape flapping, maybe its supposed to just be the wind but I liked the idea of it being the power of his spell casting radiating from his staff. IMG_20241114_195327 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So the plan is another bit of OSL type painting except with not such a stark contrast between the light source and the ambient light as in my last one with the knight in a pitch black room in front of a fire. I will basically paint him in the usual way I approach my figures with a light source in mind, its just the main light source will be the top of the staff, and I'm thinking as well the light coming from it will be a bright white light and not a particular colour. At the minute I'm thinking his cape will be purple and his robes will be a bluey green, not decided on his hair yet, tempted to do a bright whacky colour but I'll probably end up going down the reddish brown route. So I got him primed with some chaos black from a rattle can. IMG_20241122_162853 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I braved the cold and airbrushed some white acrylic ink from all around the direction of the top of his staff so I can see where my highlights will be focused. I do also give a general light spray all over too just to bring out the details just a little and make them easier to paint. IMG_20241125_155229 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241125_165541 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I've been itching to use my new wet pallet that I got for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, so finally I could get it out! Its a green stuff world xl wet pallet, I got to a point where my diy one was a bit small so I figured now was a good time to upgrade and slap it on the birthday list. IMG_20241125_194841 by Nick Frost, on Flickr My first bit of paint looks a little lost on it Thats the only other little bit I've done for now with this guy, just got the flesh base colour on which is Bugmans Glow, in 3 thin coats IMG_20241125_200857 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Before I go any further with the skin I'll get his eyes and gritted teeth painted which is what I'll do next. Thanks for looking, more soon
  4. IMG_20241021_161840433 by Nick Frost, on Flickr This was a miniature I had my eye on for a while, I loved the idea of him being bathed in the light from a fireplace but shied away from object source lighting as I didn't feel confident I'd be able to do it. But now I've done a few figures and seeing @rockpopandchips give it a go I figured I'd jump in with both feet and have a crack at new challenge. So the plan is, he's in a pitch black room lit from the front at an angle by the fire, and in the opposite direction from a bit higher by moonlight coming through a window behind him. So the start point for him is after giving him a spray with some chaos black primer, he got 2 coats of vallejo dark sea blue as the base coat. IMG_20241022_195923447 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241024_201032838 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241024_222258866 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20241024_222253808 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The last photo shows the direction I want the fire to be coming from, that will be done with an airbrush as a start point using mephiston red (which is a nice deep red) as that will be the shadow colour for the fire light. But the first step I want to do is get the moonlight highlights sorted, so that's what I will be doing next. Thanks for looking, more soon
  5. Finally got this guy through the post! Been looking forward to getting this started, and this is a monster from the Flesh of Gods series of 3D printed miniatures and as such the scale is slightly misleading because he's pretty big compared to a human! IMG_20240309_192150478 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The good thing is as its bigger in size it actually has a much more detailed base than the other 3D printed figures I've done IMG_20240309_193154763 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Had to do quite a bit of cleanup with this guy where some supports needed to be removed and sanded, but he also had a couple of tips of the fins on his forearm missing so I just used some greenstuff to resculpt them, and while I had the greenstuff out there were a couple of small dips on his feet that needed sorting too so filled them over with it as well. IMG_20240310_142153017 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240310_174715863 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240310_140545493 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240310_141043672 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then with that done I sprayed the whole thing with chaos black primer IMG_20240317_190936248 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240317_190950225 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The first decision I made straight away is that I am not painting the rocks grey, I want it to be different but also its underwater so want to give them a croal reef look so instead they will be purple and for the Fishman I'm going to paint him a bright greeny turquoise blue with bright red fins. For both I'm not doing a zenithal blast of white paint because there are a lot of nooks and crannies so I want to preserve the shadow areas as pure black in case I miss anything and there aren't lots of little details that need bringing out anyway. The only thing I've done so far is to mix 50/50 with Night Lords Blue and Xereus Purple and brushed over the rocks as a base coat for the shadows. IMG_20240317_210112058 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So now its underway the next thing I'll do is build up the purple colour of the rocks, I really like the base so for this one I'm doing base first then the figure. Thanks for looking, more soon
  6. Right onwards and upwards, time for another figure! I wanted to try a non human one for something different, so this is a 75mm 3D printed figure from the Flesh of Gods series, the actual name of the character is "Grumpy Goblin" which I think is a bit too fairytale sounding for how he looks! I've referred to him as a Frost Goblin because I'm planning on doing him with blue skin and white hair for something different, and in actual fact none of these 3D prints give any mention of what colours what so its all open to interpretation anyway. I'm still on the fence about a couple of details, I really want to make his swords "power swords" by which I mean they have lightning going up up them with a blue glow effect, but I'm not sure if that might be a bit too much blue, and I may put some actual ice effects on his hip armour. But thats all for much later on so plenty of time to think and see how it looks. So this is him IMG_20240212_163102109 by Nick Frost, on Flickr For now all I've done with him is the first step of a zenithal prime, so I sprayed him black with some citadel chaos black from a rattle can, before spraying him with a blast white laquer paint to bring out the details and give a reference for my light source direction. IMG_20240212_165121428_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240214_193515018 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240214_193526850 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Everything on him is easily accessible so I've already glued him to the base to make my life a bit easier when holding him. Not a lot of progress yet; I've been waiting for a replacement to come after the first one broke in the post so I'm impatient to get the ball rolling with the topic! Next up I'll get the base coat of dark blue on all his fleshy bits and get his eyes sorted. Thanks for looking, more soon
  7. IMG_20240101_130657689_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr This is a 75mm figure from a series called Flesh of Gods thats been 3D printed. I usually frequent the Sci Fi section and work mostly with an airbrush, but I recently wanted to improve my brush work and have a go at some proper miniature figure painting, so for the first time ever I actually bought myself a couple of decent sable brushes and acrylic paints, watched some tutorials and decided to give it a go. My first go was on a much bigger project which I finished over Christmas, it was a 3D printed Guyver kit which I used as a bit of a guinea pig to have a go at things like edge highlighting and painting with light volumes. I even had a crack at doing some NMM chrome sky /earth effects on the shiny metal parts on his head. Now I'm jumping in with this miniature, I picked him because he doesn't have a lot of crazy details on for a first time and he has a decent amount of skin out with some well defined muscle tone I'm looking forward to painting. Anyway enough waffle, on with the model, first thing I had to do was a repair; it arrived with the sword snapped at the hilt which in all honesty wasn't much of a surprise considering its such a large one and yet has a pretty narrow hilt (that first pic was just a temporary fix). The place I got it from was really good about it, sent another and the same thing happened so I said not to worry and just superglued it but made it stronger by gluing him to his base and using some greenstuff where the sword meets it to wedge in place againts his hand. IMG_20240102_200853133 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240102_201209462 by Nick Frost, on Flickr With that sorted I used some double sided tape to stick him to a bit of carboard as a holder then I sprayed him with some rattlecan black primer before doing a zenithal effect with some white paint through my airbrush. IMG_20240103_190803479 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240103_211247690 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Started with my flesh basecoat of bugmans glow for the shadows, from there I mixed it 50/50 with my next colour which is Cadian Fleshtone which I painted over most of what I did leaving the bugmans glow where I want heavy shadows which you can just about see if you squint! haha IMG_20240104_200733383 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_195412606 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_195427550 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Thats my start point for the skin, so before I got any further I painted his eye, one of the things I picked up cheap was a magnifying led lamp which was such a big help for this! First I painted it with doombull brown, then I went in with some bone white with a little of the cadian fleshtone mixed in for the white. IMG_20240105_200014648 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_200502997 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I mixed a little blue in with some black and carefully put in the iris/pupil, which I then neatened up by painting more of the base colour over the top. IMG_20240105_201037580 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I moved on with the rest of the skin. Basically to simply explain it I have 3 colours all from citadel as my main skin tones, starting with bugmans glow as the base I'm moving through them using a 50/50 blend as steps in between each shade so my steps are:- Bugmans Glow 50/50 Bugmans glow & Cadian Fleshtone Cadian Fleshtone 50/50 Cadian Fleshtone & Kislev Flesh Kislev Flesh All this working in smaller and smaller areas so I'm basically creating the steps of a gradient blend, and I will also mix an extra bright highlight with some kislev flesh and white which will only go on the face, chest muscles and top of shoulder just to keep that as the brightest area, so here are the pics of that process (sorry of the lighting is a little off with my lamp blaring) IMG_20240105_201833646 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_201833646 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_203636461 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240105_203946183 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_112834238 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_112846109 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_113238244 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_115338484 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_115338484 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_115411022_HDR by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_161650258 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_193020254 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240106_193032083 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Really happy with how that turned out, I want to sort the hair but before that I need to do the eye patch as the strap goes through, so whilst I was doing some leather I decided to do his bracers and the straps over his chest. So much like the skin tone I started with a dark base of Rhinox Hide then with a 50/50 mix of that and some Mournfang brown added before going with straight mournfang brown to build up my highlight area, this time though I moved the brush around to stipple it on a bit to give the impression of texture. IMG_20240107_155847879 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_155907239 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_161133434 by Nick Frost, on Flickr The final step was to mix some red in with the mournfang brown to help highlight it and give that leathery wartmth, before making a bright highligh from the same colour with some white and orange as an extreme highligh which I used in very small areas where the light would catch. IMG_20240107_162548073 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_162555224 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_171208770 by Nick Frost, on Flickr With those bits of leather done I can finally get the hair sorted, which I want to be greying like he's an older barbarian, so started with a very dark almost black grey which I kept on the thin side to help it flow into the deep bits, before mixing up shades of grey using a little yellow to warm it slightly and again built my highlights from there mixing up a nearly white pale grey that I only used under his lip, on the moustache and the very front of his fringe. IMG_20240107_194308263 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_194315668 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_200000982 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_200037553 by Nick Frost, on Flickr IMG_20240107_200719534 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And that's where I am with him, really happy with how its going I'm enjoying this a lot, its so different from my usual painting on models! Next up I'll start his leather belt and the fur Thanks for looking, more soon
