  1. Good start so far Mike, you'll be finished by the end of July at this rate!!

......club competition will see that doesn't happen !....... :deadhorse:

....and the rest of the unfinished builds covering our dining-room table - the family have to take it in turns to eat meals !

Did you make those decals yourself ?

If so, how ? They look superb

    Cheers for that.

I did them over a couple of weekends using Photoshop and many, many curse words

  2. Okay, so on with the build.....

    - Close up of the decal sheet. Couple of minor modifications need to be done before I put it to one side and concentrate on the plastic.

    4a.jpg

    - Fuselage halves cut out from the backing sheet and sanded down ready for the resin bulkheads

    9.jpg

    - Resin bulkheads pushed aside in favour of plasticard ones (didn't seem to fit properly but that's more than likely due to my "skills")

    - Milliput and lead weight added behind forward bulkhead and interior parts painted black, because...........

    10.jpg

....I opened two scoops under the fuselage, and I'm planning on opening the cockpit windows out instead of using the decal windscreen (Hope you're happy Keef 'n Clive !!!)

    - pilot holes drilled in the fuselage halves in order to attach the horizontal bits.

    11.jpg

Close ups of one of the scoops......

    12.jpg

....and one of the cotton-pickin' glue-trenches that resulted from gluing in the plasticard bulkheads. :shithappens:

    13.jpg

Should be able to get the fuselage halves together this week. :tumble:

  3. Stunning and unique, what a great build this is gonna be.....no pressure lol

Really impressed with those resin engines and wings. Can't see much of the fuselage, but I feel I'm giving in to the Welsh kit. Just ned to buy a new shelf now !

Cheers for the comment - hope I can pull it off.

With regards to the engines and wings, they are very impressive - no apparent casting imperfections whatsoever !

    14.jpg

Been out and bought the Welsh Models Super VC-10 in East African colours for a rainy day as a result of the 720's quality - Same mixed media with only the fuselage halves being vacformed. :thumbsup2: :thumbsup2:

  4. I'm on my own in the house today (wife and daughter off to Chester)

    Amen to that Cliff !

My wife and daughter are out today as well. Dunno where, but I'm hoping the £50 I gave them will get them far enough away for me to get the ole airbrush out for another project I'm working on ! :evil_laugh:

Good job on the ejector-pin marks !

  5. Okay, so here's the plan (It's my avatar - I couldn't help myself !!!) :

    99.jpg

Air Rhodesia Boeing 720-025 VP-YNM Mashonaland

Artwork is finished but needs some fine-tuning, so here's the "?" label ripped off :

    8a.jpg

Time to put the crayons away and start cutting some plastic.

    :frantic:

  6. So what else is inside the box ?

    Fuselage halves :

    2.jpg

    Resin wings and tailplanes :

    5.jpg

    White metal landing-gear :

    6.jpg

Resin engines and fuselage bulkheads :

    7.jpg

...and the old decal sheet (the new one is nearly finished !) :

    4.jpg

and of course the Instructions :

    3.jpg

All in all, very civilised and well worth having, if you ask me

(My kind of vacform - I just hope I can do it justice !)

  7. Hi,

I know where you're coming from with regards to vacforms although having admired your work on a number of occasions, I don't think you'd have a problem with them.

Anyway, I guess I'm going to have to come clean and admit to a bit of cheatage ! (Yes Jim, it's a vacform.....but not as we know it !)

Lift the lid on the box and you'll find that only the fuselage halves are vacformed - the rest is resin and white metal - Lovely !!!

    8.jpg

You'll notice that I've chosen a colour scheme and although I've nearly finished the drawings, I'm still trying to iron out some colour-matching bugs - that's why you can't see them yet. (To be honest, I started work on them some time ago, and before anyone asks, it isn't a "?" logo jet ! )

All will be revealed in the next week or two. I'll post some more shots of the box contents on Saturday. (Keep your fingers crossed I can pull this one off, 'cos mine are. :analintruder: )

    ....start your engines !

  8. Been wanting to do a model of the 720 for about 35 years !

Just looking for an excuse (and a decent model)

    1.jpg

Lovely looking kit and a nice colour scheme too, but I'm afraid I'm going to have to get the old wax crayons out and have a crack at something a little more exotic .......... (shouldn't come as too much of a surprise)

Crayon and paper at hand with tongue hanging out the corner of my mouth - time to get drawing

    :hmmm:

  9. Very nice result and a striking scheme Mike

Did you do anything specific to the kit, any updates or mods?

    Thanks Ray

Rescribed the details on the wings and and had a go at rescribing the fuselage (although not too accurately).

Replaced the undercarriage doors and fuselage aerials with plasticard, but otherwise that was about it.

    mike

  10. PS don't forget the Best of British comp at the end of June - book another day off now, cos the same excuse won't work twice!!!!

Oh Gawd ! Haven't been a member of the club that long, but I'm already expecting a table full of spitfires (one with a rosette on it from the last competition, and another with a blue seat), a lone Me109 and an Aeromexico DC-9 !

I'm not giving up that easy !

  11. Many Thanks for the kind comments.

"And what's wrong with being dispatched to Glasgow!!!" - Nothing wrong with Glasgow eng, except that I've only ever been there twice, and both visits were flying in and out to attend company meetings <_<

Nice job Mike, but I'm sorry it wouldn't have stood a chance against my Spitfire - Yeah right Keef ! I'm still investigating the theory that the club sponsored my trip up North just so I couldn't enter the competition - "New boy wins on First attempt" - can just see the headlines in the Evening Post :boxing:

    cheers - mike

  12. Long time no post....work commitments been taking preference, I'm afraid.

Airfix DC-9 finished of as an Aeromexico DC-9, courtesy of the excellent Two-Six decals (Many Thanks Ray - one of my favourite colour schemes !)

Had a lot of trouble with the Alclad finish, but learned a lot of things on the way to the finish line. (First and foremost - shake the bottle inside a plastic bag, so when the bearing inside smashes it's way through the base, you don't splash Alclad all over your dining-room table, chairs and floor !!! :badmood: )

I was going to enter it into our local modelling competition, but the company dispatched me to Glasgow on judging night, so Keefr managed to squeak in.

(Hell, I even made a base for the thing, so I'd like to think he had a lucky escape !)

Comments and criticism welcome as always - Thanks for looking.

  13. BA never had any 727, Comair ran some in BA livery, all with south African regs.

Woody37, Pm and e-mail on its way

You're right Rich, the 727's were owned and operated by Comair but they had a franchise deal going with BA, hence the colour schemes. I was just kidding with the suggestion to Woody. When he said he wanted something with a British link and I thought you couldn't get any more British than BA :evil_laugh:

Other options include the union flag scheme here and the Landor scheme here. They even painted 737's in the union flag scheme here

Nationwide (another South African Airline) had a similar deal going with Sabena and TAP Air Portugal although they opted to stay with their own colour scheme, with just a passing mention of the partnership airlines on the sides of the fuselage.

  14. I see, that makes sense, cheers.

Rich, I've got a minicraft and airfix 200, so think the Minicraft will stay as a 200. Anyone got any ideas what scheme I should do ? It's got to be something with a British link, but not Dan Air. The Airfix may well be converted to a 727-46 Dan Air, so PM coming your way Rich.

    Thanks

How's this for a daft idea - Why not a British Airways 727-200 ? Link

(Other BA schemes available. Have a look at the F-DCAL's web-site here : Link here)
