  1. Hi all, Thanks for the postive comments re the idea, I think the best thing to do now is over the next month or so see how many more people on here see the thread, show an interest and then by the end of march, I will firm up a date. If we go ahead with the day I will make sure both aircraft cockpits are open, and as many panels are removed as possible so you can get lots of internal detail shots as well. Sound ok ? XL929, yes that day went well, could have done with more visitors though Anthony, lol ! yeh just google us, and if you want some running action just look us up on Youtube All good fun thats kept some of us busy for many years Just the weather to sort now ! Regards Andy B (LPG)
  2. Hi all, Im one of the guys who owns and maintains the Two Lightnings at Bruntingthopre, (we are now in our 25th year) and after reading through the forum, Ive found a few threads asking for details about areas on and around the Lightning aircraft. To that end how much interest is there out there for me to arrange for you all to come and visit us (it will be a Saturday), you can all come to the the Q shed and take as many pics and get as much detail as you want ? Then pass those details onto your fellow modellers maybe ? If anyone is planning to build a scale Q shed model you can come and get pics and dimensions of the real one as well, we do however have the original plans for the shed and bungalow, if your serious. Say a fiver per head to help us with the funding of the two jets ? Some time in the early spring (April ish) Let me know Andy B (LPG)
  3. Hi all Both of our two jets at Bruntingthorpe 904 and 728, have over the years been liberally covered in a 40%/60% Waxoil/WD40 mix, that we applied at the end of each year and has done a brilliant job of keeping them both corrosion free. So yes the waxy 'dirty' film within each wheel bay is that covering, it has most certainly saved them. Prior to us rebuilding the Wattisham Q shed (15 years of work) we kept them outside, and did battle with the elements for many years. 2013 is our 25th year of ownership and preservation Regards Andy B (LPG)
  4. Thanks, we do try really hard to get it right Oh I forgot to post this up date, we got the windows in 3 weekends ago It was a historic day, we finally got those window panels I began working on back in Feb this year fitted, all 120 polycarbonate panels, the tool for the fillers, routering them and painting them, oh and the resortation of the frames them selves Seems along time ago now Its days like these that make this hobby so very rewarding for me imparticular Jim and I had two helpers today, Em and Cam . The wind up there was awfull, thank god for those doors Piccies for you Started at 10am, finished at 5pm, the job went like clock work, so all my head scratching and planning on my way to and from work each day payed off Left hand side was where we started The 'hardware' First two in And the sequence, just in case you ever find yourself fitting windows in a 1965 QRA hanger Silicone bead first, all around the inner corners of the frame Remove protective film from panel, dispose into a suitable bin Press panel into apeture and onto silicone bead Another bead of silicone in around the edges Then press aforementioned hand made/painted filler onto silicone 'bed' and run fingers (the Mk1 aprroved digit )around the filler to push all parts into the frame and allow your window fitting mate to wipe off exess and apply a small bead around the outside Some time later, first frame completed Half way there and tea break Final panel And filler Done, looking if I do say myself, the 'dogs dagglies' And then have some 'snap' a cup of nice flask tea and do the extact same process on the 'tohter' side Half way Last panel Last filler Done As you can probably tell Im over the moon with this small hurdle, that some said wasnt possible, HA ! Cheers
  5. Well another Q shed building 'fest' over the lat two weekends, helped by some good weather. We cracked on, firstly by removing a load of old steel work that was in the way for the platform. We then got the first 2"x 2" angle section up and clamped in place, then marked all the holes, and the lengths and brought it back down to cut drill and make one other and two opposite sections. These section act as the vertical fixing surfaces for the back cladding by the way Gave them a lick of undercoat and had some snap, then back up 35ft to 'podge' all the 16mm bolts in and tighten the nuts All done by 5pm and I have to say I hurting from head to toe Thats it now for the steel work, no more cutting, drilling and lifting, all done Next Saturday we are gonna give it all a god old lick of paint and I might get that store building finished. Piccies Two sections of steel work ('F' heavy when your balancing it on a swaying lifting platform) Last hole drilled 1st one ready for painting 1st one on 2nd one on Oh a little top view 3rd one on Last bolt Done And a birds eye view of the ladies And them windows, that arent leaking Im glad to say As an interesting comparison, we have come from this, our very first 'bolted in place' diagonal section back in May 2005,that was a very big day for us, let me tell you, it was the start of the work to make the frame rigid Another hard day up at Bruntingthorpe today, but very rewarding A team got all the back end wire brushed and painted, so thats the end of that, all ready for the doors and cladding now Theres still loads of bits to paint silver inside the hanger, but all the high stuff is done The three personel doors next So all is now in place for fitting the back doors, just need a few more 'grand' in the fund 'pot' Cheers
  6. Come along and see the first fast taxy we have done at twlight We will be running XR728, 904 will be in the hanger There will be a flood lit 'two aircraft on the pan' photo session afterwards And help get those back doors on the Q shed http://www.lightnings.org.uk/
  7. Silver
  8. Hi, if you give me a week I will get some more detailed shots from our two at Brunty, we are there on Saturday running 904 I will post them here on Saturday night But heres some to be going on with Is there anything else you need detail of ?
  9. Hi all, Some news for you. Busy today, the lovely weather helped We got the left hand side window frames that I restored earlier this year, all bolted in place, they went a treat, unbeleivable considering, how long its been and what they have been though Piccies say it all really First bolt in First two frame in 'Tapping' out for top bolts Last bolts Done and the paint ready to go on Looking good
  10. Hi all, Been busy since I came home from hols, latest resortation jobs going fine; Weapons pack trolley base And the top bit 1/4 of the way though paint stripping Also got a 60's style personel side door and frame for the hanger knocked up at work And delivered them both on Saturday morning Heres a comparision for you, 2005 we had just found, untwisted, derusted and fitted the steel doors frame And now New walls Also brought the mural to be hung up, this is copy of the Vaughan Radford mural which is painted on the LTF crew room wall at Binbrook And some prints to sell And Dennis and John posed for me, as per the OCU course photos which the mural used to be used as a back drop Got 1000lts of fuel in 728's wings for Sundays run Trail fitted the first window frame, after the cladding fit [] Got up there really early on Sunday morning as the weather was perfect, and carried on rendering the concrete store building walls, Put the finishing touches to it before we left for the pub at 7pm Barge boards, gutters wall paint and felt next All in all, a good day for the LPG, 728 was as good as can be expected for an old girl, we took some more cash on the stall and cockpit tours which alls goes into the Q shed fund, so all being well those back doors might be on by Xmas 09
  11. Right, here goes for the next big news item The cladding lads fitted the sides and the front down pipes, all as per advertised, finished with no snags by Monday 17th Aug, when they rang me to say 'all done' even they were impressed with how it now looks and they are doing 'cladding' all the time, so cant be bad eh Piccies for you, they sent me Start of the job First corner Done Oppsite side Done So thats that 'bit' done Next its fund rasing again, we need around 8k for the back doors refurbisment and rehanging work then another 3.5k for the rear cladding, so we are now very close, so please keep along coming along and supporting our 'do's' and we shall one day soon see it all finished At this Sundays open day we will be running XR728 once, as 904 has thrown her teddy out and will be static all day on ockpit tours, I knew having two Lightnings servicable wouldnt last long Cheers all
  12. No, shes not around at Brunty anymore, and I havent heard any news of her doing a display, so its 'just' the ground bound stuff
