Turned Metal Masts and Barrel set

White Ensign Models are renowned for their superb etch brass sets and have now, with this set, started producing turned metal masts and barrels. Whilst the designs of the parts in this set have been by the staff at White Ensign, they have been produced by another famous aftermarket manufacturer ABER. The combination of these two companies has resulted in a superb set of parts that will go a long way into making beautiful straight, strong masts, booms and yardarms for the superb Academy Warspite. This set is not to be used alone as it is designed to be used with the White Ensign Models superb etch brass set, reviewed on this site.

The set contains three plastic pouches, the first of which contains the two mast poles, one for the mainmast and the other for the foremast topgallant. Three yardarms included are to replace the kits 24’ WT yard, 30’ Helm Signal yard and 48’ WT yard. The aft, forward and forward lower loading booms, (2 of each) also replace the kit parts, although some plastic mounting brackets must be used to mount the brass parts. Finally, the four boat booms, again direct replacements for the kit parts are included. All of the parts are very well finished, complete with halliard mounting points. These parts could be affixed together with superglue, but it may be better to solder where possible for ultimate strength.

The second pouch is the first containing turned metal barrels to replace the plastic kit parts. The 15” barrels are in turned aluminium and are beautifully finished, although the bores could perhaps be a little deeper for a better look. The rest of the barrels in the pouch are produced in brass, these being to replace the 6” guns and the 2 pounder pom pom barrels. The plastic barrels of the kit parts will need to be removed and small holes drilled in the left over parts for the metal barrels to fit. The third pouch contains the rest of the brass barrels, namely for the 4” HA guns and the 20mm Oerlikon AA mountings. All the brass barrels are well turned and very detailed, especially considering the size of the 20mm and 2 pounders.

Conclusion

This is a very welcome set, which will go toward making a very realistic model. Gone are the saggy/bent masts, booms and yardarms which will also be stronger for when adding the rigging. One word of caution is that when using metal masts, ensure you remember as you work closely on the model as they could cause an injury. This also goes for when showing your model at shows with the general public getting too close. The barrels are also a delight, and if you’re used to using products from other companies then these will cause no real problems. Care and patience will be needed for the smaller barrels, particularly when drilling the tiny holes required. Recommended to experienced modellers due to the requirement for the etch set as part of a complete build.
