  1. reincarnating this old topic, but does anyone know what the shelf life of vallejo gloss varnish is? Mine has gone quite yellow in the bottle, and when I spray it (with the recommended 20% thinners at 15psi), I get a blotches that won't level.
  2. hehe, I've revided a post that's 4 years old...
  3. Once I've sprayed the varnish, I let the pieces sit for a good 48hrs so that the gloss coat can cure. I have found that an enamel wash stays put, whereas the oil wash slowly creeps away :-(
  4. The pigment of the Abteilung oil is tremendously fine, but sadly I'm not having any luck using it for an oil wash. 2 problems with it: 1) The wash is repelled out of the panel lines (I'm using an acryllic base of Vallejo Gloss Varnish). 2) It takes weeks to dry and doesn't seem to cure... touching it with a finger will see it wiped away. In Ant's original post above, he's using a 50/50 ratio of oil to Humbrol Enamel Thinners. I'm however using a 10/90 oil-to-thinner ratio, and I've tried 3 different thinners with increasing order of volatility: Abteilung Odourless Thinners, Winsor and Newton Artists White Spirit, and Zippo Lighter Fluid. (I have not tried a 50-50 ratio nor the Humbrol Enamel Thinners.) All of them suffer from repellency, however the more volatile the thinner the quicker the wash dries. In the picture of the plastic palette bellow, the wash in the bottom-left well was made from Humbrol matt black enamel paint and Zippo Lighter Fluid. At the bottom-right, Abteilung oil and Zippo LIghter. Already in the palette you can see how the oil wash has somehow been pulled up the walls and settled at the rim. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6j42fq0c4e8p7g8/2012-09-01%2013.00.23.jpg Is there a trick to prevent the oil from doing that?
