  1. Oops!

    Rookie error!

Thanks for pointing that out, now sorted

Also.....forgot to paint the edges of gear doors red, but I'm leaving that now. Otherwise the belly will end up pink! Then again..........I may.......take a very small brush to them, otherwise every time I look at it it will annoy me!

Matchbox Prowler was 1/72, glad it evoked some happy memories for you, lots of links on Google.

Thanks for all the kind comments and yes, it's great to build just for fun, relearn techniques and experiment with new ones. For example on the canopies I used liquid mask, never seen it before!....wow! magic stuff even if it was a little ragged around the edges, tho probably my inexperience.

Esci 1/48 F8 Crusader now underway. Picked it up for a fiver at Yeovilton last year. Lots of horror stories on the net about kits being thrown in the bin due to warping etc. plastic is very soft, kit very basic (which suits me at the moment!) but it seems straight and I think it may turn out OK......after Prowler experience (original decals needed soaking for two or three minutes before they'd shift and then when applied broke very easily, aftermarket moved after fifteen second soak and went on a treat! Age I guess?) I have got aftermarket decals en route from Hannants "Colourful Crusaders 9". I'm going for the blue scheme again, seems to be a trend developing here........

  2. Lovely choice of kit!

    Thanks Hepster

I've got a Hasegawa and Hobbyboss A7 in the stash but they look too complex for me at the moment. This kit is basic by modern standards, doesn't fit too well but builds quite quickly and I think, looks pretty good!

I started on Airfix Series1 in poly bags for 2/- so I appreciate the simple approach.......!

  3. Hi all

    My first 1/48 kit.

    8880adc257bb1506e420068aace309d4.jpg

Having taken advice here re airbrushes and compressors I haven't posted for a while. I was enthused by a Hasegawa XJS-S, (I'm a huge XJs fan having owned five!) but I'm ashamed to admit that I gave up and put it back in the box about thre quarters of the way through the build, just toooo fiddly.

So I have started on my chosen topic, 1/48 Cold War jets, especially US Navy, with a few Lighnings thrown in! (My fave a/c)

I thought I'd start simply and build up......so first up the Airfix Prowler, not too many bits!

Built straight out of the box, apart from.....

ad37e8e7a13184317801726639c28851.jpg .....Aires seats and after a disaster with the decals, aftermarket ones. Not too sure if it was the age of the decals, my hamfistedness or the Revell Decalfix.....unfortunately having installed seats canopy didn't fit so had to do a bit of "re-modelling"..... Oops!

Had a load of trouble with the undercarriage, main and nose and especially the doors, but hey, I'm out of practise! Anyway, I quite like the way it turned out. This kit gets a lot of stick but I liked it's simple approach to give a nice end product.

Not detailed, nor weathered, but I had fun and it's really whetted my appetite!

    82e51fcaddbe14135416e97243fc680e.jpg

Airbrushed with Tamiya and Vallejo acrylics, hand painted with Humbrol enamels.

I know it's way below the standard demonstrated here, (dodgy paint, a few gaps here and there!) but I'm building kits for fun. Hopefully things will improve.....

    Be gentle with me!

Next up Esci F8 Crusader which I've looked at today and seems straight......if it builds to it's potential it could become a cheap favourite!

  4. Hi all

I've worked at Kemble for quite a few years and I believe the Reds were originally sent to Little Rissington (near Stow on the Wold)? However the weather there was poor due to its height (I think it's one of the highest airfields in England) and so they transferred to Kemble.

There are many, many stories, not totally apocryphal I believe, of their antics at Kemble, such as low passes down the runway.......and the taxiways.......whilst personnel were crossing making them dive headlong to the ground........today Kemble is still proud to be called the "Home of the Reds"

Ref Aston Down, this is a satellite to Kemble and is to the west. The airfields look very similar and in more recent years there have been many instances of inbound GA aircraft arriving at Aston Down by mistake. When I worked in the Tower at Kemble for a short while some years ago a helicopter pilot reported by RT that he was inbound, (couldnt see him), finals (still couldnt see him!) and eventually hovering outside the Tower and asked why we STILL couldn't we see him.......OOOPS!

Re smoke. Diesel fuel is a no no nowadays due to environmental laws. In GA aerobatics it has been replaced with a light oil from the food industry used in industrial bakeries etc for lubricating machines, Shell version is called "Ondina". I don't know what the military use.

  5. I think I've found an answer having quizzed my work colleagues who have some modelling experience.....

    .....warm the paint!

Just tried it. Put the bottles, including thinners into the sink with hot (very hand hot - 60 deg C?) water and left them for a while.

Mixed up the paint quickly and thoroughly and sprayed it on using a 0.4mm needle. - voila! Result.

Went on nice and evenly with no colour variation. :-)

  6. Hi All

Ive cleared the 1/24 Spitfire off the desk at last so now onto my next project.

It will be a Hasegawa 1/24 Jaguar XJS painted to match our first XJS. Pale metallic blue.

I've found I can mix pretty much the exact colour with 50/50 Tamiya X11 chrome silver and X13 metallic blue, BUT.....the paint seems to want to separate back into its original colours and my test pieces are blotchy, some bits good, some more silver, some more blue. Maybe I just need to mix it for a very long time? Maybe I should add something?

Any suggestions as to what the solution may be?

    Here's hoping!

Used my new airbrush this morning for the first time. Bought a cleaning station with it and I can't imagine not having it! Apart from the fact it makes cleaning between colours a doddle it's a fine place to put the brush when not in use.

    For the price.....its a no-brainer I'd say!

  8. Thanks for your supportive comments guys.

Well, yesterday the box arrived, dead on time per couriers website (there was even a "live" map so I could watch the progress of the delivery van) - top service Interlink :-)

Every thing was VERY well packed. I also got a brush cleaner bottle and stand, and a small cheap turntable, 500ml of cleaning solution and a quick connect for the brush. Set it up in ten minutes, turned it on and everything worked perfectly, no leaks, quiet and seems like good quality gear.

Martin at Air-Craft was hugely helpful and we had quite a long email conversation back and forth prior to my purchase discussing options etc. he put a great deal together for me and even threw in a few freebies, I can't praise the service enough. I specifically wanted an out of the box kit without having to search for other bits and pieces and that's exactly what I got.

I have spent the last few days trying to complete my long abandoned (thirteen years or so....) 1/24 Airfix Spitfire for my first airbrush experience. I know I've been out of modelling for a while but man, this kit is a Mutha! Nothing fits, bits snap if you look at them, I've threatened to throw it in the bin several times but am still persevering. The kit is probably 1980s vintage - could the plastic have gone brittle? I haven't come across this before. Even if it isn't it doesn't help with the fact that the bits don't actually seem to fit together! I'm hoping to use it as a paint mule, after that it may get its maiden flight out of the bedroom window as in days of yore!!!

    Ho - Hum :-(

Anyway, that's it for the mo, thanks again for your support, no doubt I'll be back for further advice.

PS it's only fair that I add my thanks to Paul from Little-cars, he kindly answered a lot of my early naive questions and gave me my first hands on demo of an airbrush at Yeovilton. In the end I went a different route but thanks all the same Paul! Your help WAS appreciated.

  9. Hi all

Well, as might be expected I bust the budget big time .....but I bought what I thought was the best kit i could afford with some added future proofing (tho to be fair part of it will be my Christmas present this year) so this is what I got.

    Sparmax TC-610H Compressor,

    H&S Evolution Silverline 2in1,

I wanted a compressor with a tank and this seemed the best compromise between price and quality, and having considered the H&S ultra 2in1 airbrush decided to go for the model with a screw in paint tank, (the Yeovilton weekend demo of the ultra 2in1 showed the tank could fall out of the brush).

Had a deal with Air-craft. Net in Scotland who really were very helpful with general advice and options and seemed competitive on price as far as I could tell, having done quite a bit of net research.

We also agreed on a deal with various ancillaries for an inclusive "ready to go out of the box kit".

So just waiting for a big parcel to arrive......CAN'T WAIT!

......I'll let you know how I progress.

Thanks for all your kind advice.
