Jazzy Jase
Hello. My first post here. I'm just returning to model making after a twelve(ish) year break (gave up to take my GCSE's and never re-started). Then, for some reason the mother in law (to-be) decided to buy me a Revell Lancaster (Dam Busters) for Christmas. I've automatically gone out and bought a load of enamel paints as acrylics weren't something I even knew about when I was model making as a kid. However reading this forum and looking at a few other websites Acrylics seem to be most popular. Should I start using these in the future? I don't own an airbrush either, I've never even used one but again these seem to be a must-have. Any tips on what to get? I've bought a Revell Spitfire to build as practice before I start the Lancaster and I've noticed there is no pilot. Is this a common thing? All the models I used to make had pilots. Is it possible to buy a set of WW2 pilots? For now I want to concentrate on making WW2 aircraft in 1/72 scale. Again, since reading this forum and others, I've learned about loads of new stuff that I never even knew about, such as pre-shading and masking canopies (used to do them all by hand). I really think I need a step-by-step guide on model-making and painting. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Is there any other advice you can offer me? Cheers! perry
Hi and welcome to the forums! painting is all down to your own personal preference, whichever you prefer and feel comfortable with. I for one always use enamels. Most people like to detail their cockpits up so to put in a pilot would hide the work they've put in to their model. If you need pilots, I'm sure a quick add on here will see you buried under a mountain of 1/72 people!

gcn
i believe you had some questions most kits dont come with the pilot anymore as people like to do a bit more work to show off the cockpit. Figures are available Hannants and other on line stores will have all you need. Enamels are losing their popularity because of the toxicity and smell although people still swear by them. IME the are easier to airbrush than acrylics but more hassle to clean up so I therefore prefer acrylics, especially Tamiya although their range is not as comprehensive as others. Airbrush again IME will produce much better results than brushes although there is a learning curve with airbrushes. I wouldn't advise getting an airbrush set up at this stage as you might do one model and think feck this for a game of soldiers. If you get hooked I would move to rattle cans and then look to invest in an airbrush set up. Tamiya AS cans have a reasonable range of colours and spray well but they do work out expensive. Like you I returned to the hobby after more years than I care to remember away and the information available these days can at first appear mindblowing to what you knew way back when. By looking at tips sections on sites such as here, hyperscale, Aircraft Resource Center, Fine Scale Modeller, Modelling madness, Aeroscale etc etc will soon bring you up to speed. You should be able to find loads of pages showing what other modellers have achieved with your Spitfire as a good starting point for reference.
