A Trump Sluff

Recommended Posts

Ok here's an update and tale of slight disaster.

Wheel wells were put together and lightly washed, Equipment cabs likewise. Gun constructed and painted steel and intake further sanded to smooth the line between converter and intake.

DSC_0175.jpg

Now the disaster, despite numerous dry runs and test fittings, I came to the point of joining the body halves. Intake was placed into the body along with the cockpit and gun. Then I went for it! Starting at the business end I glued the body halves and worked my way to the rear. THEN in went the nose with cryo glue and BUGGER it set slightly skew which in turn threw the cockpit combing out along with the Zacto screen framing.

:shithappens: But then we are modellers not just assemblers right?

Anyhow desperation and alterations brought the following results.

This is the result with the outer ring in place

Hands up all those who think this looks like the gob of a basking shark?

smoothing the body joints and wing areas next.

My, what a big mouth you have, Grandma!

:hypnotised:

Looks like another clever recovery! It also makes me glad I have a D not and E so I don't have that refueling probe to work around... That is after I've stolen err.. borrowed everything I can from your build here!

One question though: What color have you painted the inside of the electronics bays? Do they not get a chromate yellow in there?

Thanks guys.

The wheelbays are a mix of interior green and matt yellow and although darker than the chromate yellow Visually I didnt think it was far off BUT my phots arnt the best and appear to be highlighting a few "issues" with my build, although Im happy to share.

On reflection perhaps a few more pipes and wires would be in order. Ive yet to wash a second time and do a little highlighting.

I cant recommend the conversion enough, even at this stage it completely transforms the look of the sluf. The nose cone itself is about 1/3 as big again as the original trump depiction.

More soon.

Good save on the nose, and nice to see you still recommend the conversion (good to know after I already splashed my hard-earned on it!)

QUESTION: does anyone know what ejector seat the D and E models had during the Vietnam era? Were they the same type?

Have a look earlier in this thread. Periklis kindly pointed me in the direction of a couple of sites re this very subject.

My understanding of what I have read is that the Stencel seat was designed specifically for the A7E no mention of the D.

Its adoption was not apparently accross the board so it appears the D was fitted with Escapac and the e had the option of the Stencel in replacement so some e's did some e's didnt.

That dow help at all does it?????

Some more sluf stuff!

Been a little busy of late and the sluf has fallen a little by the wayside.

Anyhow, done the wingfolds

DSC_0001.jpg

When I came to build in the hinges unbeknown to me the sprue had obviously twisted or something dropped on them. They are really fine pieces of plastic and i found that they had snapped right the way accross all 6 tiny little hinges rendering them useless. :shithappens: Anyhow, I gave the problem some thought and replaced the hinges with some wire stripped from a telephone cable and bent to shape.

DSC_0002.jpg

Next came sanding filling sanding filling etc etc until the "gob " of the plane was smooth.

DSC_0009.jpg

Then a layer of white on the relevant bits and bobs.

DSC_0010.jpg

Grey next, back with an update soon.

TTFN

Oh By the way, Ive modelled the wings with the front slats drooped

Great job so far!! I'm getting to the stage when I'm having difficulty choosing my next build, but this kit with the Zactoman conversion has to be up there near the top of the pile!

But i'll wait until you've finished yours so i can nick all your tips!! :wicked:

Had a few hours to play today so the Gull grey went on together with the (very light) Klear floorshine coat.

DSC_0016.jpg

The rudder is just pushed into place for the mo as im going to reposition it off centre for the final display. also had a go at reproducing the elevator rub plates, not sure though.

DSC_0018.jpg

Wheel sets completed and washed

DSC_0017.jpg

cab unmasked for a bit of further work

DSC_0022.jpg

Wingsets with aelerons and flaps fitted

DSC_0024.jpg

And todays coup, the nav light. I thought i would try something different as the kit light is moulded in grey plastic. I coated the light in chrome silver humbrol 11, and when dry drew on it with a red acetate permanent marker and hey presto

DSC_0027.jpg

What do you think?

Cockpit work next with the Zacto stuff then decals and putting wings to body.

Hi mate!!!!

Very nice work so far. I have to comment on a couple of things f youdont mind.

1. Because you are not using the ESCAPACseat you should remove the ejection handle from the top of the seat.

2. The area of the cockpit tub behind the seat in all my references if black and not light gray.

3. I still can see the seem line between the upper na dlower part of the intake

4. Check the size of the sidewinder launcher as i think it is fat and short

I hope you dont get disappointed with my comments. I think you are modelling in a high level so i thought why not dont you corect 1 or 2 small things!!

Thanks again for your kind comments, and Periklis for your constructive observations.

In hindsight I would save up for the Aires cockpit and Zacto seamless intake but I run out of personal celebrations with which to ask for donations to the modelling fund (Yes im a tight bottom!)

The kit comes with mouldings for two ejection seats and TBH there is not a lot of difference between them, I think the one plumbed for in the kit is actually a cross between the two used in the A7's and as a result has ended up being pretty no specific.

With regards to the Intake seam, you are quite right and seameless intake would be the easiest and neatest solution. I really didnt think it would have been as visible as it is, and that is with copious amounts of PVA and filler shoved as far down as I could. One other thing is that on the 1.1 aircraft the turbine intake fan is visible at the far end, again something I would like to do on the next sluf if I get round to a second one.

One other thing is that my sanding kit didnt reach as far into the intake as I would have liked, again something to invest in for the future. By way of a consolation, the seam isnt visible if you look up the tail pipe end so its not all bad! :D

In relation to the cokpit tub, yes you are quire right about the color which I will correct. the reference photos i am using are not as lear as i would have hoped and as a result I used my best guess / trumpeter colouring instructions which are clearly wrong

im inclined also to agree with the launchers they are again direct from the kit.

It probably a case of me wanting to get stuck into this kit without the in depth research i should have done but i needed a New Year project and this had been staring at me for a couple of months. :suicide:

Welldone mate!!!!

I just wanted to point out a coupleof things!

Just remove the ejection handle and you will have the seat for an A-7E late

Put a cover on the intake (no visible seems)

You will repaint the back cockpit

Use the missile to cover the launchers.

Problems solved :D

Thanks folks,

Mark, I picked my marker up from my local art shop however they are available in the likes of Staples and other stationary stores. You will nedd the permanent marker for acetate.

One thing I am seriously considering is sealing the light with a good dose of Klear floorshine before I apply my final satin coat. I have a feeling the thinners in the enamel paint will make the light run.

Work on the Sluf has been intermittent to say the least but here is a short update.

I completed the wing unit (minus the armament) and decalled it seperatly to the fuselage mainly for ease of handling.

As I have said other than the Zacto conversion it was oob (can that happen?) and as such I have used the kit decals, I have to say Im extremely pleased with their quality. I applied the decals, following a soaking, by wiping the application area with some neat Klear floorshine which as it dries pulls the decals hard into the contours of the plastic. Be sure to give the area around the decal a good wipe with a peice of damp kitchen roll or suchlike so you dont end up with a dried ring of Klear.

Anyhow results below. Oh by the way ive started part washing the beaut. You should be able to see the difference between the washed and unwashed parts.
