This is Hasegawa's 1/48 ME109E-4/7 Trop kit. I aquired it via a swap with Paul H on this site, just last week.

I've always liked the spotty desert Schmidts since seeing a colour photo of one as a child. When I got the kit and looked at the instructions though, I was immediately struck by the tiger stripes one

So struck in fact, that I accidentally started building it on thursday night

The build is laughably simple, so good is the fit. I have used no filler at all, anywhere, not even superglue. Of course the central seam panel line helps too! I like to build at least one stupid mistake into all my kits, on this one it's the lack of canopy armour, I got a bit carried away fitting the transparencies and forgot it

One of the reasons I've come to like building German aircraft is the lack of masking I have to do when painting (I hates masking I do) but this build actually had quite a lot.

The painting diagram shows an early scheme of RLM02/71 over RLM76 with no mottles. I made an arbitrary decision that in my world RLM02/71 goes over 65, so that's the colour the underneath got painted with. This was blue tack masked for the small bits of upper camo on the fuselage and the wings had Tamiya tape demarcation on the right wing and blue tack on the left.

I was then able to go into freehand mode to add the tiger stripes, cowl overpaint and splotches of 71 and 02 over previous markings.

I used Gunze acrylics throughout, all fairly heavily faded to represent a well used desert fighter. Annoyingly, the kit instructions refer to mixes for the RLM colours, I used the appropriate ready mixed Gunze colours instead. All the decals were a bit out of register, I had to trim the crosses but you can still see the white outline on the numbers. There is a full set of stencils on the sheet, but no placement guide, so I didn't put any on. With all the oversprayed bits on the plane most of them would have been lost anyway.

The weathering uses Phils new style wash for the panel lines and my own varied concoctions for the rest, flat finish is by Xtracolour XDFF.

So, Thursday night to Sunday evening :D I'm really pleased with the result, it's a lovely model which captures the blunt nosed bullish look of the early 109 really well. Why oh why can't we have a nice 1/32 kit of this one???

Hi Jen

Super fast work again, really brilliant. I cannot wait to see your Storch, how is that progressing, did the 109 push it out the way?

As Den says there is definately a brand new one on the way from Eduard in 1/32, I even saw parts of it on the CNC machine in Czech Republic when I visted the factory in September.

So there you have it you will need one when it arrives then?

Merry Christmas

Ali

Thanks guys :D

A new 109E in 1/32 from Eduard? Ace! That will go on the list along with the Hellcat then, I don't think Eduard know how to do a rubbish kit!

The Storch was waiting, I needed some help, via photographs, to see where everything was supposed to go! Thanks to Edgar, I now have all the photos I could possibly need and work has commenced in earnest on that one this morning.

I only have the one, my son, Thomas. He's very much into modelling of the warhammer variety. He's a pretty awesome sculptor and a keen artist. He's at college now doing an art and design foundation degree.

It runs in the family to a degree since both of my younger brothers were big into warhammer (painting of rather than playing the games) and Thomas spent a lot of time with them learning the ropes.

You might think I'm a bit proud of him....

Very nice job Jen! :speak_cool:

You were right in painting the lower surfaces RLM65 instead of RLM76. You have made a very nice job of painting this Emil!

I am actually working on a couple of tropical Emils at the moment but both will end up being RLM79 over RLM78 - one with a replacement wing in RLM02 and RLM71.

The one you have built is on my to-do list though. ;)
