Italeri 1/35 Italian Navy WWII M.A.S. 568 Motor Torpedo Boat

Recommended Posts

Here's Alans narrative......................

Unaccustomed as I am to building boat kits - I was given the opportunity to put this one together and I am delighted that I took it on. The last ship kit that I built was the Airfix Captain Cook's Endeavour some forty years ago when I lived in the Whitby area.

The kit is excellent, it goes together with ease but there is a surprising amount of work involved and on the hull, etc a surprising amount of paint. Italeri's instructions are not perfect (who's is?) but the little history book included in the kit is a great help. There is not much information available on these boats so the history book is a great help.

It is all out of the box with the exception of the following: The steering gear rope (string in the kit) was replaced with 1mm metal towing cable. The (thinner) string for the aerial wires is replaced with fine jeweller's wire. Making the wire really tight would not work because of the flexibility of the masts. There is a compromise between tight wires and banana-shaped masts. I applied the camouflage pattern to the hull that may or may not have been carried by 563. A photo in the history book shows a similar pattern on these boats but not specifically on 563.

I thoroughly enjoyed the project and don't intend leaving it another forty years before my next boat build. I may weather, add crew and accessories to the model at a later date. Being 1/35 there is plenty of aftermarket bits and pieces available. For those who prefer their models to be on the move, I have seen a built example with motors and radio controls and very few compromises to the scale finish of the model. All being well the finished model will be on Gloucester's tables at Telford if you want a closer look.

This is a superb job.I will certainly look for it on the stand at SMW. S'funny,I lived just outside Ciren for 14 years and never met a single ship modeller, now I am living where there are no modellers at all......

Having seen what you do mtd, this scale is WAY too big for you :D

Some say size counts.....others, that it is what you do with it. I'm with the latter, and excellence, regardless of scale merits comment :)

This ,for me,really is a superb build, and I look forward to seeing it for real at Telford.

See y'all there

That looks really nice, I've got the e boat and really enjoyed it (although there is still a bit of work to do on the painting weathering front and I can't wait for the vosper to come out. I hadn't been tempted by this kit but this might have changed my mind!

Not as regards my model building, mate! I'm retired and will be reduced to scratchbuilding using old orange crates soon.... maybe...

Sorry, I only meant that it was an unique way to describe being broke...

Well if it matters, I think your artwork is very nice. If I wasnt dealing with my own 'localised austerity', I'd be pleased to buy some.

No offense taken. Wish someone would by a few paintings, trouble is that here in mid-Portugal we're all broke! and that M.A.S. boat is soooo tempting, and would look really great next to the Vosper when it's released....

Very nice build! Looks absolutely fantastic. I'm a big fan of MTBs, working on Revell's PT 109 w/WEM PE set right now and have Italieri's big P.T. 596 warming up in the bull pen. I usually tend to USN and IJN subjects, since my primary interest is in the Pacific Theater, but looking at that beautiful build makes me think I need to broaden my horizons!

Very nice boat there! And even more considering it's OOB. I like the clean crisp paint on this one. It doesn't have to be weathered imho when on a stand like here.
