Airfix 2012

I suspect that the vibrant young end of the market will think along the lines of "Oooh! A Red Arrow! Mum can I have one?" rather than "Oh dear, why have Airfix invested needlessly in a kit of the Red Arrows' former aircraft when they could merely have sold more Hawks?"

The point is, if they're aiming at kids their market audience is generally unlikely to notice the difference between two small red, swept-wing training aircraft...

Strangely, I imagine that a married man over 30 years old saying "Oooh! A Red Arrow! Dear, can I buy it?" to his wife is a more likely scenario. ;)

What Red Arrows effect? Anyone who can remember the Red Arrows flying Gnats will be reaching Zimmer frame age soon :) : not the vibrant young end of the market Airfix have been so successful in reinvigorating. Anyway, like I said, I'm not complaining.

Well I can remember the Gnats and I'm not even 50 yet! :P

Just an slight aside, does anyone understand the arrangement that Airfix had with Grand Phoenix/Aeromaster/AIRES years ago? I'm speaking of the Lightning F.6 and Seafire FR.46/47 that were re-boxed with resin, photo-etch and alternate markings. Were these were one-off projects from "a previous regime", a short-term venture, or is there a real possiblity that such releases could reasonably be expected in the future?

I imagine the same deal monogram has with the people reboxing the F-106, A-37 etc. They just supply say 10000 kits no instructions, no decals etc and the other company throws all that in and boxes the stuff up.

Yes and no. :D

There's a couple of new tools on page 11, another on page 14, 16,17 and 20 to mention a few. There's also a few new tools for the people who like green things without wings -one looks very interesting!

Then there's a selection of re-releases. Two of which should be welcome and haven't been out for years!

Cheers!

Picked up Airfix Model World today. It comes with a free 2012 calendar.

Not sure if the photos down the side of the months are clues, but...

January features K5054

February is a Vought Kingfisher

March is Lightnings

April Valiants

May JU 52 (both wheeled and on floats)

June Spitfire Mk V's

July Hawk 81

August Hurricanes

September Lancasters

October Tornado F3's

November Swordfish

December Aichi Val

Clues? Or just nice photo's?

What about March's Lightnings? Is there any idea about a Lightning F1/F3 1/48?

Apart from the Gnat & Valiant PR/Tanker (announced previously), I cannot really see anything to get excited about. Certainly very little there to tempt me to part with my cash - apart from possibly the A4-D. Bit of an anti climax. Still, that's just me. i'm sure there are many who will go into paroxysms of ecstasy at the prospect of yet more Spitfires,Mustangs, BF-109s ...............................!

Probably getting fussy in my crusty old age!

Why is one 109e a series 1 and the other a series 2? I would have thought they would be the same series and have roughly the same number of parts...

Looking forward to the skyhawk, chipmunk and for some odd reason the Lynxs (even though they are the wrong scale and don't have wings!)

Re the Bf109's. Probably single markings option and limited stores for the series 1 version, multiple parts and marking options for the series 2 kit like they've done with the Spitfire recently!

The Lynx does have wings - they're called rotary wings (that's the proper technical name for a rotor blade)!

Looks like Airfix have tried to play it safe as far as their new tool aircraft are concerned. I'm looking forward to the new Spitfire F.22 but I have to say I would have liked to see one or two more British types (either WWII or post-war) amongst the new tools. Perhaps Airfix have taken the view that the Eastern European manufacturers like MPM have issued so many British types over the last 5 years or so that the market has been satisfied for now. It seems they are investing quite heavily in the 1:48 figures/vehicles instead, so let's hope that they do well with them.

Amongst the re-releases, it's nice to see the MiG-29 back as that is a nice kit.

As Airfix has released kits from other manufacturers i.e. MPM/Xtrakit Meteor F.8 lets hope that the Spitfire F.22 is not from another stable and is totally new to Airfix.

How very disappointing. Are the 1/48 Harriers worth re-releasing? I thought they were, ahem, challenging to say the least...

They are certainly not challenging - they need the application of average modelling skills, but they are the perfectly buildable kits (OR have we become spoilt?) and in the 30th anniversary of the Falklands War, their appearance was guaranteed.

I wonder if the Skyhawk will have Falklands markings as well....

A proper injection moulded Spitfire 22 is something to get excited about! 602 Squadron markings please Airfix!!
