p-26luvr
I spent several hours yesterday putting etch-brass on the 3rd corps version of these models. I have only the radar array on the rear mast left to do on that model, & then it will be into the paint shop for the 2 coats of primer. I took pictures of the 3 models together as they are now, but since I am still having trouble getting on to the photobucket site I cannot show them. I have been looking at the 3 models with everything in place & it seems hard to remember that I started this building project just a little over 2 months ago. As the models set now, I figure that in combination there are between 800 & 1000 pieces of plastic & etch-brass parts in the 3 models. p-26luvr
These pictures show the 3rd corps version as it is now, ready for its primer undercoat of paint. I expect to be painting on all 3 models by next week. I am showing this picture to show the ladders up either side of the upper masts. I made these by cutting off one of the side pieces on a verticle ladder. I hope that these pictures clearly show how all of the models basically look. p-26luvr
The last 2 models are being primer coated by my friend Curt. I will be starting the regular painting sometime next week. I am still having problems getting on the photobucket site, so, it will have to be pictures whenever I can. They & I are trying to solve the problem but so far without much sucees. p-26luvr
My computer has been in the repair shop for a week & I just got it back today. Also Barbara had a heart attack on New Years day, so I have had a lot of things going on to keep me busy lately. I have been doing some painting on these models, It is all hand painting. The decks, bottom, & 1 coat of the orange so far. Carl T
p-26luvr
These 2 pictures show my models as they are at present. Today, in preparation for rigging the various wiring on these models, I went back to the Modelwarships site to look at the walkaround pictures of the SOYA put up by Mr. Dave Lockhart. For anyone contemplating a fully detailed model of this ship studying these pictures is an absolute must. The thumbnail pictures are enlargeable so that all of the detail is easily picked out. The wheelhouse area, the wire rigging, lifeboats & davits, the color of the decks, even small details such as the color of the vents along the inside of the forward bulwarks. Any time put in studying these pictures will be amply rewarded with a better model. Carl T

p-26luvr
After looking at some of the other threads on models with preformed wood decks I came across a supplier with these for the SOYA model. It is too late to do me any good now, & I do not remember who it was; but, I know it was during a google search. It seems to me to have been a Japanese company. I realize that this is not very much help, but I just came off from reading Phil Reeders thread & that reminded me of it. Carl T
p-26luvr
I have repainted all of the decks a more representative greyish color to match the pictures in the walkaround, & I have put on the first coat of the white paint on 2 of the models, & painted the large helicopter landing pad a dark grey. With the 3 models all together, that is really going to stand out. Everything is coming along nicely but slowly. I am allowing about 3 days drying time between coats of paint so that no finger prints show up in the paint. I have also ordered a second model of the first corps version which I will try to convert back to the war time version as I described earlier in this thread. Iain Ogilvie
Ace!! I've gone a different route with mine and painting a lot of sub-assemblies before putting together - I was worried the ship would be difficult to paint once fully assembled - but looks like you've made an easy job of it! p-26luvr
These 2 pictures show the models as they are at present. I have used just the one model as being representative of all 3. I have done most of the deck fittings using the closest color approximations as my paint supplies allow. To answer Iains comments above. I masked off the waterline using Tamiya masking tape & then painted the lower dark red. Once the tape was removed there was just enough of an edge to paint the orange color up to, & the upper part of the orange fell along a panel line, & the white color was above that line. Because there is some over painting of the colors there will be some touch up painting, but not as much as I expected with my shaky hand. The same comments applies to the deck fittings. I will shortly be tested to see if the shaking is from a case of Parkinsons disease. Carl T
Alan P
I'm really impressed with your painting skills Carl, like Iain I would have thought painting the fully assembled ship would be difficult. (I'm sure it is VERY difficult, but you seem to have breezed through it!) Al
p-26luvr
I was thinking about it earlier today, painting these models by brush I mean. For the last 25+ years I have been using an airbrush except for painting cockpits & the last few 1/72nd scale biplanes. It seems almost like having to learn all over again how to paint with a brush. I think that part of it is that I am enjoying being outside my normal modeling interest & comfort zone. The models in & of themselves are colorful, interesting, & challenging; & I am getting a lot more satisfaction from each step that I finish. Normally that comes only with the finished model. Thank you for your very kind comments. Carl T

p-26luvr
Here is one picture of each of the models as they are after this past weekends work. The masts are only temporarily in place. As Mish said, they are coming along. First corps version. second corps version. third corps version I think that you may be able to plainly see why I am doing all 3 versions because of the varied appearance of them all. p-26luvr
I now have the first coat of white paint on all 3 models. As I have repeatedly said, I am now 80 years old. I remind you of this not to complain, in fact just the oppopsite. While building these 3 models, my first 1/350th scale ship models BTW, I am enjoying myself more than is easy to explain. My satisfaction quotient is through the roof, if you know what I mean. I am actually looking forward to doing the 4th one, the conversion back to the WW2 version. I know that I am not making them to contest standards, in fact far from it. I figure that at the rate I am going it will take at least another 2 months to finish them including all of the rigging. I have always admired the ship models that I have seen at the various shows I attend, & particularly those made by a few on my personal friends, But my respect for their work has grown greater since I have been doing my own models & read the threads on this site. I THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR INSPIRING ME. Carl T

p-26luvr
A tip for you fellows that do brush painting. I have been painting figures for over 35 years & learned about doing this from doing that. After you finish cleaning your brush with thinners, clean them again with an artists brush cleaner. This is like a bar of soap in a plastic can, which you get at an art supply store. The one I have is called" The Masters Brush Cleaner & Preserver" Cleaning with thinners does not get all of the paint out of the bristles up near the metal ferule. You would be surprised at how much more there is left. This also will help in holding the shape of your brush. Just follow the directions. You just dip your brush in a container of water & then rub the brush on the cleaner surface vigerously & wipe it dry. Continue doing this until no more color shows, & then shape your brush as you want it. This will work even on hardened paint. Doing this will keep your brushes good for years longer. And it is not overly expensive. Carl T
p-26luvr
My 4th copy of this model arrived earlier today. This is the one that I will attempt coverting back to the WW2 version. I wanted & ordered the first corps version, but I got the 3rd corps one. There will be more scratcbuilding & extra cutting on the hull sides. It will be what is called in radio controled circles, a stand off scale model. When I get some positive results I will post pictures of my progress. It will be a slow & easy does it build. I have been working on the other 3 models today. Pictures later. Carl T
p-26luvr
In this picture you can see where I am going to remove parts from the hull & deck in the cross hatched area. These will be my first cuts in this conversion. Carl T
p-26luvr
I am nearly ready to start cutting the hull parts for the conversion. While I can easily envision how to go about doing this work, having the model in my big sweaty hands & actually doing the cutting is very much a different matter. I have had some of the pictures in the booklet enlarged so that I can make out some details better. The whole superstructure is going to have to be scratch built. I have been considering several different ways to remove the bulges on the sides of the lower hull. Having paid the full price for this kit, I do not want to ruin it. I will post pictures as I go along. Carl T
p-26luvr
I am taking a few days off from working on these models & am now working on a WW1 1/72nd scale PHONIZ D 2a that I started a few months ago. I need a change of pace before I start on the conversion. Carl T
