SAAF Junkers Ju86

Recommended Posts

I'd like to build a 1:72 Junkers Ju-86 in South African service, searching the net for an Italeri Ju-86D or a Ju -86E to convert into a SAAF Ju-86K or Z,

I came across the RS Models http://www.rsmodels.cz/

Ju-86R http://www.rsmodels.cz/?link=view&id=92078 and

Ju-86P http://www.rsmodels.cz/?link=view&id=92077

Has any one had any experience of RS Models?

The Italeri Junkers Ju-86 is not in the current catalogue but seems to be available via 2nd hand outlets

The other site I discovered was LF & KORA models e-shop http://www.lfmodels.com/models-172-convers...=4&sort=20a, conversion & correction sets for Swedish, Austrian South American & SAAF Ju-86K http://www.lfmodels.com/junkers-ju-86k1-saaf-p-744.html

Again, anyone one have any experience of LF/KORA?

Hello Dave,

If you purchase any of the Kora kits I feel sure that you will not be disappointed,so long as you are used to using resin conversion parts.I must confess that I didn't know of the wide range of JU86 subjects that they cover.I have just dug out two Kora kits that I hope to complete some day. I have a 72nd SAAB B18B and a 48th FFVS J-22A. Both look very accurate,are composed of good quality resin castings,photo-etched parts and,in the case of the J-22, white metal undercarriage legs. They have vacform canopies and good decal sheets and Robert KORABA,the proprietor, is very prompt in sending any replacement part required,

Regards,

Bill Anderson.

I don't know that kit but I find LF and Kora kits overpriced for their quality. I like RS kits, I have a few, but the high altitude versions are not the way to go to a SAAF Ju-86.

Depending on the aircraft you wanna do choose the Italeri kit (4 different kits, two civil and two military, inline and radial engines, different noses...) and buy the Wydawnictwo Militaria 142 to help with the details.

Different Italaerei/Italeri/Revell kits:

Looking at the Kora site quoted above, they actually do specific conversion kits for SAAF Ju86 models as well as a range of others.

They may well be very good, but I'd like to see a review before I bought one, or at least know what's in the conversion set.

My experience of Kora is limited to building their Coronado, which was a huge effort

but I got there in the end.

If this helps, here's the contents of the Kora conversion kit for the Bolivian K-7 (from the Italeri D-1).

Very nice resin parts, but really no more than the bits to convert from in-line to radial engines plus a decal sheet. You could get the radial engines far more cheaply by buying a second, radial engined Italeri kit (the parts come separately, so no surgery required).

Is the Kora set worth £25? You decide...

Not sure if you get anything differant for the SAAF version?

Cheers

I also meant to say that the civilian versions of the Italeri Ju-86 were re-released by Revell (not sure about the bombers?). Their Z-2 version would be a cheap source of radial engines if you end up needing them.

I was referring to the RS kits. Nice Coronado, by the way!

The Hugo Junkers Home Page, one of the best resources related to Junkers aircraft, lists four different models exported to South Africa:

* Ju86K3 - with BMW132Da (590kW), only a single aircraft is known in 1937 for South Africa

* Ju86Z3 - passenger airliner with 2 x RR Krestel sold to South Africa in 1937

* Ju86Z5 - passenger airliner with 2 x P+W Hornet sold to South Africa

* Ju86Z7 - passenger airliner with 2 x Hornet SIE-G or Hornet engines for South Africa, Sweden, Bolivia

It also lists an "extensive article about South African Ju86" but the link to the IPMS South Africa is broken. And in their site I only could find this:

The HJHP: http://hugojunkers.pytalhost.com/ju_home.htm

P.S. - If someone has the IPMS SA article I'd appreciate a copy!
