FROG VULCAN i hope ive done her justice!

Recommended Posts

I'm a little nervous posting this whist very excited as this is my holy grail of model kits. the frog vulcan b1 i have searched for 18 or so years for one.

i decided to build the kit as is out the box with few modifications.

the only mods were to scribe the rad dome line at the front to line up and scribe the bomb aimers window on to be painted.

the decals were also all from fantasy print shop as the old ones just didnt look good at all.

i wanted to model to last for historys sake as they are so rare so i did wheels up and left off the tiny fragile wing pitot tubes.

hope you enjoy this one. sorry about the photos the weather has not been on my side gloomy light.

feel free to comment all the best rob.

What were you worried about? She looks great.. You have a stand so we can see her in flight as it were?

thanks glad you like her. she was first sprayed with humbrol rattle can 53, to stop her being see through. then sprayed hu11 rattle can silver. then finely wet and dried to add a more metaly look i discovered this by accident on a revell lightning i made. then hand painted free hand the black and grey areas with hu33 and hu165 acyrilics thinned only with windsor and newton flow improver wonderful stuff it is too.

then sealed with astonish floor polish applied with a sponge, about 3 coats till shiney. then i added the fantasy print shop decals over the engraved roundel and regestration locations.

then i give it a home made pastel/washing up liquid/water wash.

then removed the excess, then sealed with a can of hu35 clear dusted on to even it all out.

then finally a few sponged on coats of astonish floor polish to seal it again.

oh and i forgot to mention ill find a stand and when the weather is better ill take some other photos, ill also try editing the photos in gimp like i did with the airfix ones and try to get it flying along side some airfix ones make them scaled roughly to each other so it can be compared and when i do that ill probably do some shots with the lindberg ones i have too.

cheers rob

cheers guys id like to think so. its the only decent kit of a b1 available and as you can see its very different to a b2 in many respects. ive long been fascinated by b1s and there seems to be a big overlook of them historically it always gets on to the history of the b2 all to quick for me.

i love the wing shape of the b1

Lovely build mate, is that one of those kits they did at an odd scale like 1:96th or something?

hi mate glad you like it. yep it sure is the vulcan victor and valiant were made to 1/96th scale, as were the lindberg victor and vulcan prototype models not to be confused with these as they are totaly differnent kits

i dont know if any other kits are made to 1/96th its a nice scale i think

Lovely job Rob, (don't know why you were so worried mate!), certainly looks like an early B1. Considering that these models were made way back in 1957/8 they are surprisingly good really, the only thing that they all seemed to suffer from was over large wheels and intakes, (I think the wheels thing was more to do with the models being viewed more as 'toys' back then and needed a bit more strength as a result). I notice that FROG have even got the correct longer outer engine tunnels on the underside than inner ones which is a nice touch, definitely better than the Lindberg effort. Are you going to add wingtip pitots?

Just needs a decent stand, (no chance you have the original black 'swivelling' base one I suppose? as they were very nice).

Great job, :clap2:

hi andy thanks very much. well when its such a rare kit you worry about making a balls of it you know. it is a nice touch with the engine tunnels there were much different on b1s to b2s again ive noticed that they sometimes seems to taper a little too on some b1s. and 200 series b2s. its another think that i thought of modding on the airfix kit but it might be a nightmare. i think the bore was different too. was xa891 the vulcan b1 that had afterburning engines or was that xa894. ive still got the landing gear safe in a bag.

and as for the stand its still in the box. though i have a corgi stand off a hawk that it sits on nicely a canberra was on in before.

as for the pitot tubes. well i decided to leave them off in case of damage i wanted to build the kit as robust as i could so it would last for history hopefully longer than i will in the hope someone else in the future may enjoy it too. as there are no real b1s left this is one of the next best things seeing as its about the same age.

all the best mate take it easy rob

GASP!! HEATHEN!! You actually built that model?!?!?!

They're supposed to be stashed away in a loft and guarded like Krugerrands!!

JUST KIDDING!!!

Looks marvelous!

yep i did and i understand that statement that it shouldnt be build but it was built to be built. and enjoyed. so i built in a way that it was made tough so it will last. and could easily be repainted if ever needed be.

thanks a bunch and glad you like it.

Having looked at the photos, I've just worked out what looks out of place - it's not camouflaged and it's not XH558.

So well done!!! :worthy:

Vulcans look good in any scheme to me, but so many people are creating the same one nowadays that it's a pleasure to see a model that stands out from the rest.
