SaintsPhil
Afternoon all! I'm Just finishing the detail on my FGR2 for the GB and I can't seem to find any pics to confirm the colour of the speed brake bays, they are currently White but I'm not sure they shouldn't be red like the brakes! Also is it normal for them to be open while the aircraft is at rest? One last question, what colour are the inside edges of the flaps? That is the bits visible while they are droped? Thanks Phil

Thanks Phil Usually on the grey FGRs they were painted the same as the underside colour. The edge of the flaps and ailerons were either red or sometimes they were pink as per the roundel colour. Sorry to say that I am not sure about the position of the airbrakes as it was a seperate switch to operate them and if they were dropped I am sure that an external lock was fitted to them to stop them closing. Hope that this is of some help.
SaintsPhil
Ah the one option I hadn't considered, them being grey! I'm building the all over blue FGR2 from 19 sdqn so I assume they wouldn't have painted the bays blue, they would still be LAG? Phil
Duncan B
I can't speak for FGR2's but prior to 1985 anyway the FG1's speed brake bays were red as were the edge of the flaps. The speed brakes drooped when the hydraulic's weren't pressurised and stops were fitted around the ram as they would snap shut if hydraulic power was applied to the aircraft, not nice if you were stupid enough to be in there, I was always very wary even with the stops in place when I had my hands and head in there. Thanks Phil Not sure about the later colour schemes, but during my time on FGR 2's (1971 - 74) the actual bay itself was white and the speed brake door inner surface was red, HTH. SaintsPhil
Typical! I knew which ever way I went I'd find out it was wrong afterwards!! Oh well it's red now, and it's a nice contrast frto the blue of the airframe so I'll stick as it is! Thanks all three of you for the help! Thanks all three of you for the help! Phil The red interiors of the FG1's could have been a Royal Navy specific thing that didn't get carried onto the FGR2 spec? Or maybe the RN painted them that colour to hide the blood stains from crushed fitters? They did that on the floor of the Surgeon's "office" on HMS Victory to make the blood running around look like water so they have a history of that kind of thing and they do like their traditions !! Giorgio N
On the USN phantoms I've seen the bays were white and the speed brake itself red. Having anything that opens in red or red edged was a safety measure to make these parts more visible in the cramped working conditions of a carrier.
