Tornado GR4 convert/ Decal questions..

Hi Guys,

Havnt been abble to get on here for a while, nor doing modelling itself for a while ! I have recently got my hands on a Italeri Tornado 1/48 Kit, which Im going to be converting to a RAF Tornado GR4. I was just wondering of 2 things which I know people who have made a 1/48 GR4 might know the answer too:

1. Where and which GR4 conversion kit could I get?

2. Decals wise, does anybody know where I can get decals for the new style tail numbers, of the fins of the Tornados? (Have checked Model Alliance and they only have decals of the old Letter system)

I havn't decided what Airframe to do yet, but it will be inflight hopefully

Hi Matt,

The only real external difference between the GR1 and GR4 is the FLIR pod on the port side of the forward fuselage next to the LRMTS pod, there's a new cockpit too but don't think anybody has produced an updated cockpit in resin or photo etch. As such all you really need is the FLIR pod, however, in 1/48 nobody produces one on it's own and the only one I can think of is the Flightpath set which contains a white metal example but its a lot of money if that's all your looking for. You do get a lot of other great stuff within this set which you would need to make an accurate GR1 or GR4 but it depends on how accurate you want to go and how much you want to spend.

If I were you I'd either see if anyone has a spare FLIR pod to hand (think the Hobbyboss kit comes with one) or make one yourself.

Model Alliance probably produce the most up to date decals for the Tornado that I can think of, so you'll probably be struggling there without doing your own.

Thanks for the reply mate

I have seen the flightpath set, as you say it is quite alot of money, hoever, it would be go to get an accurate GR4, but Im not too fussed how close to real it is aha :') As for the decals, if thats the case I could wait to see if Model Alliance do an updated GR4 or try and use other decals for the job. (Im thinking 1/48 Harrier tail numbers, differnt to the tornado ones, but may do the job aha )

Ill will ask now then, Has anybody got a spare Tornado GR4 FLIR Pod going? PM me with details if anyone has !

Apart from the Flir pod,the differences are quite minor;

Port gun removed

Pilots wet film moving map replaced with square CRT

Some new switch panels,some removed (SWAC panels in both pits)

TARDIS display replacing the Navs moving map display

Chaff/Flare grips fitted to canopy for navigator

New comms aerial fitted to rear inderside for use in Afghan

Afghan jets also carry the TERMA pod in place of Skyshadow

New headbox on Ejection Seat.

New pilots stick top.
