johnd
If I take a 1/72 Airfix Spitfire I/IIA and stick the C wing from a Mk IX on it, adding the supplied Mk V oil cooler and exhausts and finding some bigger cannon bulges I'd end up with a decent Mk Vc. The only fly in the ointment would be the cost of the two kits plus an aftermarket prop. It would only make economic sense if I could do something with the remaining parts - can anyone suggest a project using an A wing and a Mk IX fuselage? Thanks, John. Test Graham
The Mk.IX wing is too wide in chord and there is a difference in the underfuselage fairing. It may be workable but it isn't plug'n'play. MK.IX fuselage + A wing suggests a reworking into a PR Mk.IX, X or XI. There is no variant with an A wing after the Mk.Va. It might be a basis for a conversion into a Mk.III, but not ideal. As for economic sense, there are a lot of Spitfire kits more expensive than two (or even three) of the new Airfix ones. Such as the Sword Mk.Vc, which is arguably the best 1/72 Spitfire kit around, and a better way of making one.
Chuck1945
AFAIK, the major gripe with the Airfix 1/72 Spit Vc is the wing, massively thick trailing edges, so I am not sure what gain there would be using that wing on the otherwise quite nice Spitfire I/II kit. If a Spitfire Vc is desired the Sword kit is a much better choice (as Graham said)
Giorgio N
The wing of the airfix 1/72 spitfrie Vc not only has massively thick trailing edges, it also resembles a plank more than a wing, missing all the delicate curves of the real thing. This and the very rough surface detail make the Vc boxing a disappointment. The wing of the newer IX is much better, although as Graham said does not fit immediately. Not that your plane is bad, and I believe somebod here already tried this way. The propeller is not really a problem as long as you make a Vc with a De Havilland propeller, that should be in the Mk.I box. If you want a rotol propeller, you can buy an airfix Vb and take the prop from there. This box will also give you the Mk.V oil radiator and fishtail exhaust. Now however that will make it 3 boxes for a single kit, although the Vb box can often be foundvery cheap at model shows. With the remaining A wing you can really only convert it into a PR wing to do Mk.X or XI if you want to use this on the IX fuselage. Can't think of any other option. First thoughts for me with it was a Seaf IIc,until I looked at it more closely.......... Sword's the way to go for an easy Vc. Mark
dfqweofekwpeweiop4
Have a look at the Sword Spitfire Vc, I made. It's defiantely the way to go at the moment for a Spit Vc if you want a decent model. Clink on the link at the bottom and have a look in the examples of completed 1/72 aircraft. thanks Mike
