Hi folks,

For some strange reason, I've got it into my head that I want a 1/35 British Sherman.

I'm aware that Dragon do the Mk II and the Mk III, as does Tasca. I'm leaning towards the Mk II as I think the cast hull looks better, but I'm also tempted by Dragons "Sicily" Mk III. Maybe it's the box art..... :hmmm:

Which is the best value? With their prices being so high, I don't want to waste my money on something I can't build or give up on!!

Thanks in advance,

Mike. :)

They are both very good kits, a lot more parts in the Dragon box, the only "down" I have on the Tasca kit is the stupid rubber sheet they give you to cut up and use for the suspension "springing", the Tasca kit is probably the easier build, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS, the Dragon kit has DS track which is about two links too long so a little trimming will be needed. At the end of the day both are good. With regard to the comment I made earlier about the rubber sheet in the Tasca kit, I found the sheet which came with the original boxing of the Firefly Vc which was released a few years ago, picked it up and it crumbled! So all you out there with completed Tasca Shermans on your shelf just might want to check and see if they are sinking on their suspension! Formations make "Ridespacers" for Tasca M3 and M4 type VVSS suspension units, or you could use bits of plastic card cut to size.

Cheers

Phil

Funnily enough I was thinking along the same lines after getting a Revell M4A3 "Calliope" kit from Modelzone for a tenner over the weekend. Was thinking I could use this as the basis for a conversion to a IVC with a new gun barrel and extension to the rear of the turret

Thanks for the advice, Phil! :thumbsup2:

I've had the PMMS site in my favourites for a while, but it only gives an in-box review of the kits. I haven't found anything that covers a simple OOB build of the various kits, so your info's much appreciated.

Although the Tasca one is very tempting, I'm leaning towards the Dragon kit at the moment.

You cant use the Revell Sherman Calliope kit which is an M4A3 for any version of the M4 that was usd by the British or Commonwealth forces as this version had a different hull, turret and engine and suspension!

I know they all look the same to an untrained eye but Shermans can be a minefield to the unitiated!

Ive built both Tasca and Dragon Shermans and would say the biggest problem with the Dragon kits is the photo etch track guards etc. The Tasca kits foam pads for the suspension can be replaced with blocks of plastic card. The DS tracks in the Dragon kits can be a problem but just ensure you have the idler mount set to the rear most setting, say 3 oclock looking at side from left and 09 clock looking from right hand side.

Whichever kit you go with, you wont go wrong! Either is far superior to the Tamiya kits.

It could be used as the basis for the American Firefly, which as far is known never saw action.

Ahh, well its good to have experts around to avoid making mistakes like that - in that case I'll just ahve to build it as a Calliope and make do with having Yanks on my shelf
