Fifer54
For a long time now, I've been very aware that the most obvious weak area in my modelling skills has been the final coat of matt varnish. I've never found a varnish that goes on smoothly, in a very thin coat, and gives a good "look" to my models. The other day I bought a tin (Are they still tins if they're made of plastic?) of Revell AquaColor "Farblos" acrylic Matt Varnish. My first impressions were not encouraging. I popped the lid and gave it a stir. . . and it looked like PVA glue (or Kristal Klear) in the tin, and was of roughly the same consistency! "Oh, bother!" (or something similar) I thought. "Another duff matt coat" Hmmmmm, perhaps I could thin it a little. . .("Why, that's never worked before"?) I decanted a few brushfuls into a paint jar lid, added a drop of distilled water for every brushful, and mixed it together. Now it looked like thinned PVA glue. . . . . . but it went onto the model beautifully! No brush stroke marks, a thin, even coat and a finish better than I've ever achieved before. (Not that that's saying much!) My models are still rubbish, but it won't be because of the matt varnish from now on!. . .
