Pappy
G'day people, Thanks very much for all the nice comments. It is getting there. The cockpit still needs the canopy 'bridge' section betweenthe front and rear cockpits, I am still not sure how I will build this, let alon mask the cokpit area. Following that I just need to work on the undercarriage bits and then the kit is just about ready for the paintshop, cheers,
Romeo Alpha Yankee
Nice updates Pappy. Did you spray the extras you added to the cockpit? I see these pictures of the stratch built stuff in situ one minute without paint and then the next pristinely painted and the surrounds that were previously done still look the same without any over spray, etc. How did you paint the add ons? Pappy
Nice updates Pappy. Did you spray the extras you added to the cockpit? I see these pictures of the stratch built stuff in situ one minute without paint and then the next pristinely painted and the surrounds that were previously done still look the same without any over spray, etc. How did you paint the add ons? G'day Ray! The area involved is quite small, about the size of a fingernail on my pinky! It would have been a very fiddly task to mask the cockpits off to spray the new bits without making a mess. I just went in with a brush and took care of business, old school stylee. The trick is do all the detail painting (cables etc) and touch ups (if required) before applying the wash and drybrushing to the new areas to make sure they 'new' areas have the same tone as the existing areas. I didn't intend to add any extra detail behind The rear seat initially as I wanted to keep this build pretty much OOB, but I always seem to end up fiddling with a kit, especially the cockpit. The previous cockpit base colour was airbrushed, in this case using Testor's Model Master Dark Gull Gray (FS36231), standard for US cockpits, but all the other details were brush painted. I conciously take before and after pics, which can be frustating. I really like brush painting details and I want to paint the new stuff straight away, rather than set up the camera, take pics, load them into the PC, then paint and repeat the process. cheers, Edited September 12, 2011 by Pappy

Pappy
G'day fellas, Thanks very much for the kind words. Hopefully my resin seats should arrive this week. I just need to make the section that lives between the two canopies, Italeri didn't seem to bother ! I have a cunning plan, so I will have a crack at it on the weekend. I am very happy with SUU-20A/A myself. Since the underwing tanks will not be fitted, the practice bomb dispenser will be the main focal point besides the cockpit, so it made sense to add a little more detail there. Thanks again for looking, Pappy
mmaker
I found that a Greek website "Kalfakis" sells a generic 1/72 sheet with roundels, flashes and the stencils that I am after, it looks like I have answered my own question! Pappy, this set is wrong printed and is about 1/100 scale...!
mmaker
Pappy, Great work overall! We didnt see many good F-5s at 1/72! Cant wait for the paint! As for the build, you should trim those bulged antennas from the vertical stabilizer. Those found only on Dutch NFs. Greek F-5b with SEA camo had at first years of service, early Northop seats.(Aluminium camo, and SEA with aluminium wing tanks) Later used MB MK-Q7, exactly the same seat as of F-104G with a little different headrest! Finally, the only one Dutch NF-5B,some ghost painted birds and some SEA,used MB MK-10L seats, the same as Mirage 2000 At the final days of their operational lifes, some painted with a camo, similar with one from Mirage 2000,but undercolor with that of the previous camo!(FS-36622 from SEA,or even with those form a ghost wraparound!!!) again with MK-10L You can paint it with Asia Minor camo (Ex-Jordanian) Or a ghost one(ok had some more paint...!) Pappy
Pappy, this set is wrong printed and is about 1/100 scale...! G'day George, Good pick up on the fin 'bumps', I'll get onto them. I have already ordered the decals, if they are underscale (they claim to be 1/72) then that means I am back where I started and I will need decals again! I plan on doing s SEA camo scheme, though I like the look of the ex-Jordanian (Asia Minor) camo looks interesting too. I have some questions first: What colours were the Jordanian jets painted? Did '611' carry Jordanian markings as well as Greek? It looks like the peanut shaped tip tanks have the Netherlands AF canouflage? Thanks again, Pappy
periklis_sale
Pappy based on an old article on a Greek modeling magazien the colors fo rthe Jordanian decals were given as: FS 30140 (Brown) FS 20400 (Tan Special) FS 34079 (Green) FS 36622 (Light Grey) The following picture is a guide only for a F-5A. In the link i gave you in the first page you ca find a number of photos of the Jordanina F-5s (source: Kostas Dimitropoulos)
Pappy
G'day people, Big thanks to George and Peri, lots of great info there. George pointed out a couple of teardrop shaped lumps on the fin which are not present on HAF F-5B's. A few minutes with a knife and some files and the offending lumps have been removed. A package arrived in the post today. The Pavla MK.10L's look very nice but first I needed to add the canopy breakers to the front seat. The resin pour plugs were quickly dispatched with a razor saw and then I added a couple of triangles made from plastic card. I couldn't resist! I have given these a quick blast of black paint and set them aside for tomorrow, when I can pick out the details, I can't wait!! cheers, Pappy Edited September 16, 2011 by Pappy
Pappy
G'day people, A small update today. The seats have been painted up. Plus I couldn't resist a quick dry fit I have started on the section between the cockpit, cheers, Pappy
keefr22
Nice work Pappy, the paintwork on the seats looks excellent!! What are you using for the centre arch - copper sheet?? Keef
Pappy
Nice work Pappy, the paintwork on the seats looks excellent!!What are you using for the centre arch - copper sheet?? Keef G'day Keef Thanks for that. The centre arch is indeed a piece of copper sheet. I thought about using plastic but it is a little too springy and getting the arch shape would be a little hit and miss, whilst the copper is quite malleable and has a 'memory' so it will keep the shape. I need to add a bit more to it and I think I will only attach it at the very end. This way I can avoid damaging it during handling and I can hopefully use the canopies to mask off the cockpit. The resin seats fit perfectly, unfortunately, I need to add the rear seat rails from the original kit seats as the prominent canopy opening mechanism is mounted to these and they were retained when the seats were changes over. Once I have this sorted, I should be ready for painting, cheers, Edited September 18, 2011 by Pappy

Pappy
G'day people, Only a small addition today. I have carried out some work on the undercarriage. The nose gear tyre was repositioned at an angle to add a little more interests and I added a PE scissor link. That was quite fiddly, I felt like I was wrestling with a small spider! The main gear units have had some hydraulic piping added using some fine copper wire and the tyres have been painted up. Here is are undercarriage after a splash of paint, cheers, Pappy Edited September 25, 2011 by Pappy

Pappy
Nice legs Pappy!! (wheels look good too!)Keef Oh you! I have been neglecting this little guy of late but I managed to do a little more today. I have finished painting the tip tanks. These are a a different colour to the rest of the jet which will be in the ex-Jordanian desert scheme. The tanks seem to get knocked about a bit of HAF F-5's with lots of scuff marks and chips evident, so I added some wear to my tanks too. A final dry fit before these are put aside cheers, Edited October 20, 2011 by Pappy
