Col.
Dare say you've all seen this one in the Hawk GB thread here but a quick run through of what's happened so far; Started with this kit, adding a little detail to backdate the seats and correct errors in the cockpit, then sorting out a couple pilots using Matchbox figures mated to the kit arms, to create an in-flight scene, Wing to fuselage fit was not great and required a bit of adjustment and filler to blend in,
Col.
also backdated the tail fillet, and added a few fine details around the airframe such as antenna and the wing fences, the canopy MDC was done using white watercolour paint, then slow drying Revell white paint scuppered progress during the final days of the GB, four days later it had finally cured and was masked off ready for a coat of ancient Humbrol HX5 that dried within 24 hours, This takes us up to date and now trying to cut a set of masks that will allow me to spray the RAF roundels as Modeldecal don't provide any with the 4FTS option from set 86. Once that's done it'll be a case of spraying the red and getting into detail painting but plenty to do during the drying times as I've still to make a pitot probe and stand for it. Set a new deadline as the end of this month to get it ready for the local club competition. It'll not be a winner but at least I'll have something to show. jacksdad
Looking good Col. Is that a hairy white snake your using to represent clouds? to create an in-flight scene,
Col.
Looking good Col. Is that a hairy white snake your using to represent clouds? Cheers Steve. Spent the last half hour trying to think what the 'hairy white snake' was and narrowed it down to either one of those pesky throw cushions Fiona insists on infesting the couch with (think they're called throw cushions as that's the first thing I do with them when I sit down) or a draught excluder Iona plays with sometimes and therefore gets left in odd places. Will check when I get home later and report back. Not that I'm having a boring day at work or anything...
Nobby
Nice work mate, and i love the pilot mods! The backseater with his hands on the coaming looks brilliant!
Col.
Cheers Nobby. Found a few photos that suggested it was normal practice for the instructor to use the blast screen bracing struts as hand-holds and was then confirmed by a Hawk instructor on the GB thread. Sprayed the red this evening but it's not looking too good. For some reason it started nice and thin then went thick and splattered on as I was working down the fuselage. Had to stop and add more thinners before continuing. Think there's been a bit of paint creep under the masking as well Going to leave it alone for a day or two then see what sort of mess I've created. My attempts at masking the roundels also proved fruitless so need to find decals to suit now. By the way, if anyone is wondering, the 'fluffy cloud' was the draught excluder. Alreet min, I'm gonna be in Inverurie tomorrow for work. If you still need the decals, let me know what sizes you need and then arrange a good time to meet up. Mark. Could do with two at 18" for the fuselage and four at 27" on the wings if my memory is working. Did convert that to an acctual decal diameter in milimeters but buggered if I can remember what that was at the moment. Will fire you a PM later
Bertie McBoatface
to create an in-flight scene, I like the backseater's pose - holding on for grim death! It's very realistic and it makes me wonder whether he is perhaps a journalist?
Moofles
i must say the pilots really set the model off, coming along really well.

Col.
First of all thanks for the encouragement lads. Glad you found the crew posses as entertaining as I did After making a hash masking the airframe for red and suffering a lot of paint creep as a result I lost some interest in her. A couple sessions touching up the worst parts helped so today I got a bit of detail painting done. Mainly the black anti-glare panel on the nose and various antenna as well as the arch of sealant over the canopy internal screen. Right up until this point I had contemplated striping the paint off and starting again but now it's a case of get her finished and into the cabinet where no-one can look too closely. Decals next then sort out the display stand.
Moofles
its damned annoying when the painting messes up, but to me looks good bud, will look great in your cabinet.

Harry Lime
Alreet min! We are all our own harshest critics, so don't be too down on this one. I think it's looking pretty sharp and it's still going to end up a good looking model. Mark.
bigbadbadge
Hi Col Paint creeping is a pain, but that besides it still looks great, just a thought, is it possible to gently rub down demarkation lines with a very very fine grade of wet and dry to try and level out, then touch in any areas needed, I did this on my car when I pinstriped it to distress the pinstripes a bit, however did that with Wire wool and scale is 1:1 so a lot easier to control than on something this small. Thanks for sharing All the best Chris
Skii
Nice work Col - a quick rub with some micromesh will sort that masking edge no problem. Beautiful little Hawk that
Col.
Cheers for the encouraging words lads. Perhaps I've become too fixated on the bad bits of this one but the photos are making it look better than reality. Forgot to mention the pitot probe needs replacing so there's another job on the list. Got some stainless steel from old bicycle spokes to turn down in the cheap Dremel-copy so that will hopefully be a job for tomorrow evening. Col.
Last night got the pitot probe turned down from a short length of piano wire and glued into place. Initial experiment with a piece of bicycle spoke worked out to more like 48th scale but allowed me to find the best tools for the job and get a feel for what I was trying to do. Not quite perfect but then the photo is a lot bigger then the actual part. Think it's decal time now...
Harry Lime
That pitot tube is a bit good! I'm impressed with that. Mark.
Col.
Thanks Mark. Took a wee while to get it done but think it was worth the effort. Less likely to get damaged in the future as well. Spent the last few days decalling, working first on the underside then upper surfaces followed by right and left sides, using all the markings and codes provided by the Modeldecals sheet and augmented by the roundels Mark (Harry Lime) was kind enough to give me - cheers min, owe yi one for that. Alas in my haste to make progress I forgot to change the serial from XX172 to XX163 as planned Excuse the photo quality but done indoors with ordinary lighting. If I get a moment to myself tomorrow will take some outside in the hope they are better quality. Next task is a stand to display her 'in-flight' but will have to rummage around and see what can be used.
