jaw
Good afternoon BMers, I'd welcome some advice please. I have just purchased the Welsh Models 1:144 kit of the Andover C1. A rather nice little kit with a vacform fuselage and im wings/tailplane. But of course it comes with RNZAF decals and I want to do the RAF version in the dark earth/tan/black scheme. I have managed to get some pics of Andovers in flight but what I would like to know is whether these aircraft had underwing serials on both wings or just on one, and whether they had underwing roundels - again on both sides or just one? I have also seen that they had the light aircraft grey scheme all over with 32 Sqdn, and red/white/LAG with 115 Sqdn and raspberry ripple with the ETPS aircraft. Choices, choices, choices but I think I will stick with the desert scheme - at least for the moment! Thanks, John
Max Headroom
You could also so the prototype G-ARRV being one of the two original Avro 748 prototypes...... http://m.photobucket.com/image/G-ARRV/Amos...pg.html?src=www Trevor
Vulcanicity
http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/Ha...ee3441775f3b4e9 http://www.airliners.net/photo/UK---Air/Ha...ee3441775f3b4e9 The above two photos appear to suggest that neither side had underwing serials/roundels in the Black/Dark Earth/Mid Stone scheme. Also bear in mind that there are two versions: the Andover C.1/E.3 (which your kit presumably represents) has a longer rear fuselage and clamshell doors, giving quite a different shape to the CC.2, which as a VIP machine was more like the civil HS.748 in shape. At least some of the 32 squadron aircraft in the grey scheme were the CC.2 version Hope this helps!
Mr T
The colours used for the intila RAF scheme were Dark Earth and Light Stione with Black undersides. The upper colours are available from Xtracolour. So far as I can remember they carried medium sea grey underwing (?) serials under one wing (starboard) and a red/blue roundel under the same wing. The serial read from the roundel inward, thus O XS608. Of course at some stage they may have carried serials under both wings. Hope this helps and that someone else can confirm or correct as necessary I have not got access to the info at the minute . At some stage at least one Andover was painted in the Dark Green, Dark Seay Grey Light Airvraft Grey sceme.

I'm not sure if decals are available. 60 Squadron: 115 Squadron:
Dave Fleming
. At some stage at least one Andover was painted in the Dark Green, Dark Seay Grey Light Airvraft Grey sceme. XS644, with 46 Squadron and 51 Squadron (For testing ELINT gear) - it had serials and red/blue underwing roundels The RAF had a VIP configured C1 in white/grey with a very thick blue flash (XS637), and 60 Squadron latterly had the same C1 in a 75th anniversary scheme The overall light grey ones were, I suspect, Medium Sea Grey over Light aircraft grey (in line with other RAF transports, the division between the colours was very hidden - look at the lower nacelle) - It could have been Barley/Camouflage grey on the uppers instead. There are also the RAE and ETPS aircraft, initially in a few schemes then in Raspberry Ripple, the open skies aircraft in white/grey - and the prototype painted up as a Russian aircraft for the film Invasion in 1980!! Lots of nice pics here: http://forums.airshows.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=29115 Hadn't realised the Welsh kit was out - been waiting 25 years for that one! Tartan11
Bearing in mind that the Andover C1s were delivered to the RAF over 40 years ago --- From memory the original colour scheme of dark earth/mid stone/black I THINK had white underwing serials both sides. I can't remember if there was a roundel under one wing or both. Note that I am refering to the factory applied colours here - obviously changes were made in service. If there had been a kit available at the time I would have taken more interest ! Edited September 20, 2012 by Tartan11
