Which Hurricane book?

Hi all,

was contemplating getting either the Guideline Publications or Model Alliance/On target book on Hurricane camouflage schemes. Can anyone comment on which might be better? Seem to remember that the Model Alliance had loads of different profiles, but am put off a little by accuracy problems in several of the Model Alliance decal sheets I have recently bought - don't want to get the book specifically for paint schemes and markings and find that they are in fact wrong . . .

Cheers for any comments.

Paul.

Neither are perfect, but then what is? Both are perfectly good for the majority of schemes, and both give a good introduction to the range of possibilities. As always it is worth checking other sources once you decide on a particular example. Do you have anything particular in mind?

Still one of the best primers on Hurricane camo, albeit NW Europe only , is the 70's era Ducimus monograph.

Camouflage%20and%20Markings%20No.3%20-%20Hawker%20Hurricane.jpg

unfortunately out of print since then too.....note price is still in listed in both old money/decimal! yeah that old.....

but, also freely available as a download pdf.

Try here http://military-machine.blogspot.com/2009/...no3-hawker.html

there were 12 in the series, from memory.

Spitfire, Hurricane, Typhoon/Tempest, Beaufighter, Blenhiem, Tomahawk/Mohawk/Airacobra, Mustang, Mosquito, Gladiator/Fury, Whirlwind/Meteor, Havoc, , all of them great, all are available as pdf's.

Ducimus also did a series on the USAAF, also very good and also available as pdf's.

I have bound copies, but the pdf's are worth getting as easier than scanning them yourself!

Hi Paul,

FWIW, save your money and give Famous Aircraft of the World, Hawker Hurricane by Richard Caruana a miss.

However, the titles listed by Troy and Edgar are much more sound publications and regarding that listed by Troy, I've just sent you a PM with a link to where you can obtain a copy.

Yes, that was probably in a recent post of mine.

There is a book currently in preparation which, as I am given to understand, should be going print in the not-too-distant future.

If anyone is interested I will post updates here as they become available to me.

Cheers

Hi Dave

i'm certainly interested in new material, and I'm sure other members are as well.

Hmm, New book, new 1/48th kit from Italeri....interesting times.

Paul,

in regards to the Ducimus monograph, this is one to track down for any Hurricane model buff, as it's very clear and concise, and covers all the major changes in NW Europe theatre Hurricane colours with dates of changes. They also have guides for what size markings goes where, and when!

And it's very clear on all the details, like a drawing of details that can be hard to remember "what happended and when" , an example, the undersurface colours changes between 1939-1941 - aluminium - black/white/aluminium - black/white split - sky - Sky with black port wing - medium sea grey - sequence, all laid out togther.

All the Ducimus monographs are easy to find online as downloads, and are as detailed, on ALL the aircraft I list above, they are still the first place i look for a basic query or reminder of details of these subjects.

it's a crying shame that no-one has republished a complete collection of them, but I have a bound set of all 12 monographs which is probably easier to find than all 12 monographs separately if anyone is about to scour online used booksellers.

Absolutely right. I agree strongly that the Ducimus series - the 12 RAF ones and the 10 USAAF ones - are excellent references which stand the test of time very well. They will almost certainly have informed more recent works like the 2 titles mentioned by the OP: if they haven't, they should have! If anyone is after a pukka copy rather than a PDF file, I have the following duplicates for sale at £3 each:

1. Spitfire, 3. Hurricane, 4. Hawker Tornado, Typhoon and Tempest, 7. Blenheim, 8. Defiant, 10 Boston/Havoc, 11 Meteor/Whirlwind/Welkin.

Just adding an enthusiatic endorsement of the Ducimus set - I bought several of them individually back when they were new and then the bound volume when it became available. I wasn't aware of the pdf versions however, so thanks for that. The bound volume has received a lot of use over the years so having pdf versions for quick refence when at the computer would be helpful.

And ditto tango98's (Dave) comment regarding the Caruana work.

This thread is all about why I enjoy visiting this forum. I downloaded the Hurricane Ducimus pdf and having just painted a hurricane was pleased to find I got the undersurface correct - the Black/White/Aluminium does however look slightly weird but as it's a flying model I hope it will help me decide which way up it is!!
