Barrovian
Recently at work, a colleague saw my Airfix Superfreighter arrive and stated he had seen these in use by the RNZAF, this military use interested me and a bit of research found that they were also used by Argentina, Australia, Burma, Canada, Iraq and Pakistan. I can't find any colour images of any of these users, can anyone help? Thanks in advance
AnonymousA667
I can't find any colour images of any of these users, can anyone help? Not colour, but an old issue of Scale Aircraft Modelling did an Aircraft in Detail on the Freighter with a good number of monochrome profiles by Mike Keep. Sorry can't remember which issue, if I find it here I will let you know. Magna do resin conversions to turn your Superfreighter into a Freighter, also there was an article in Airfix Magazine way back when with a conversion article by Alan Hall (who else?). peebeep
Paul Bradley
That SAM was vol 14 #4, featuring the 170 Freighter and Wayfarer. Unfortunately, that's one copy I don't have.... If anyone has it, could they please make me a set of scans or photocopies?/ And as far as I am aware, the Superfreighter, as modelled by Airfix, was commercial only - no military - so you'd have to do a conversion as Paul says. Magna do two conversions, for the Mk. 21 and Mk.31, both available at Hannants. Edited December 9, 2007 by Paul Bradley

kitnut617
In the book 'Royal Canadian Air Force - Aircraft Finish & Markings 1947-1968' by Patrick Martin (available through CanMilAir http://www.canmilair.com/categories.asp ) there's a couple of colour photos of RCAF Freighter Mk.31's, one in green/grey & PRU Blue camo and the other NMF. I used the Magna Models Mk.31 conversion on my Airfix Mk.32 to produce this. Cheers, Robert
Silver Fox
hope this works, its an RNZAF Freighter in the preservation hangar at the RNZAF Museum at Wigram a close up, the RNZAF machine is actually hard to photograph as it is hiden in the hangar most of the time. Also it was a busy day when these were taken.
keefr22
There's a couple of colour pics of an Argentine Air Force Freighter on A.net, such as; http://www.airliners.net/photo/Argentina--...hter/1024213/L/ Also an RAAF machine (again a Freighter though) ; http://www.airliners.net/photo/Australia--...hter/0931779/L/ and again after restoration; http://www.airliners.net/photo/Australia--...hter/0573470/L/ A slightly odd use for an ex RNZAF machine (as a tea room at a motel!!) ; http://www.airliners.net/photo/Bristol-170...hter/0120892/L/ 2 different RCAF schemes with radar nose; http://www.airliners.net/photo/Canada---Ai...hter/0153045/L/ http://www.airliners.net/photo/Canada---Ai...hter/0153044/L/ Right, now I'm off to e-bay to look for an Airfix Superfreighter (& you never know a Magna Freighter conversion!!) Not wishing to hijack the thread, could I just ask if they are Canmilair decals, & if so what are they printed like? I recently got a 1/144 set for a CP140 Aurora, & while they were lovely to use, the printing was awful - every image was really badly pixelated (if that's the right term - very dotty I mean!!) Dave Fleming
There were a few on the British Milatary regisetr as well - a couple of early ones used at the TRE, and a later one (mk 31?) at the AAEE for many years

Keef Hi Keef, Thanks. Not CanMilAir decals, insignias came from the Leading Edge sheet of insignias, the RCAF banner on each side came from an Airfix C-47, white background from the spares box and I made my own serial numbers. Although the Magna conversion doesn't come with decals, mine was based on one of the many schemes that are shown on the instruction sheet for the conversion. If your CanMilAir decals are really bad I would contact Bill Burns and see what he can do. I've quite a few of his sheets and I haven't seen that problem on any of them. Robert Edit: The only real Freighter I've seen is this one which I found as a gate guard at Yellowknife Airport in the North West Territories, this is an ex-RCAF Mk.31 Edited July 29, 2008 by kitnut617

I had to finish the kit for our model club competition so had to use them regardless. To be honest they look OK(ish!) from over 4 feet away! Martin H
You would certainly need the magna conversion set or even the old Airmodel vac form one to any military Freighter. as for British Military examples (as per Dave Flemmings comments) not many saw much use but quite a few did have serials allocated, most likley for MOS book keeping. WB482 & WB483.MK-21E WT930. MK-? WW378. Mk-21E XE286,287,288. Mk-3 XF650,651,652,653,654,655. Mk-32. XF656 & XF657. Mk-21. XF658. Mk-21E XF659,660,661,662,663. Mk-21. XH379. Mk-3 XH385. Mk-31E. (was looking them up yesterday for a Whiff idea that i have brewing)
