best Mk 1 Hurricane in 1/72nd?

Hi all,

was rummaging through the Hannants website and it suddenly seems like there is a shedload of new 1/72nd Hurricanes. I have a half-built Airfix effort on the shelf of shame, but am gripped by my annual Battle of Britain obsession, so was wondering if there is something 'betterer'!

Cheers for any comments.

Paul

For a fabric-winged Hurricane Mk.I then look to the AZ Model - the old Sword tooling but better produced. You do have to thin down the resin undercarriage bay to make it fit.

For a metal-winged Hurricane Mk.I then the Hasegawa is best: however their basic kit is more accurately described as a Mk.II and needs its nose (or rather, the forward fuselage) shortening and a new prop for a Mk.I. Other versions of the kit do come as a Mk.I but are even less easy to find nowadays.

Other available kits are Mk.IIs or even Mk.IVs.

Further to what Graham said, the only choice you have for kits that are in production are by Airfix and AZ Model. The Airfix as you well know is the old kit and not very nice by nowadays standard - don't be fooled by the new box! I have the AZ model kit in my stash and it's very nice in comparason. If you can find a 2nd Hasegawa one, it will be the nicest kit to build out of all of them but isn't the most accurate.

If you want the AZ kit, give me a shout. We stock AZ and would be able to get one in for you at a good price.

thanks

Mike

I would have to disagree with Graham about Hasegawa. While beeing technologically superior, it has many shape and accuracy issues and fabric effect is exaggerated. Don't even think of reducing it by sandpaper, because the result would bring you even further from reality. The most accurate late Mk.I is still Airfix. I have great expectations and am holding my breath for the announced Mk.I from Cyber Hobby.

I agree that the Hasegawa kit has exaggerated fabric effects, which can be improved by a number of methods, but disagree about general accuracy although (as I pointed out) it is certainly better as a Mk.II than a Mk.I. The Airfix Mk.I has a severely pinched nose that is far too small for a Merlin, a common failing with Hurricane kits before the Hasegawa, and repeated even on Airfix's new Mk.IIc. It also has an overall "Mr Blobby" appearance, with rounded edges that should be sharper.

Like most models, ensure that the kit you choose has a Mk.I radiator not a Mk.II.

It also has an overall "Mr Blobby" appearance...

Some of the more wicked of us might say that this accurately sums up the Hurricane! :o

...but I want to stay on Graham's good side, and I actually DO like Hurris. By the way, the new (to the USA) "Hurricane Special" from whoever it is is worth picking up- some good photo reproduction and some I hadn't seen before.
