Now in Ready for Inspection

Thought I'd share this before I do my usual botch job on the camouflage scheme. It's going to be the wraparound Lizard schemed aircraft 'My Karma' from the Two Bobs sheet,

Thanks for the comments so far, I need someone to boost the motivation because, as I thought, things go wrong at the camouflage stage. Although it should have soft edges to the colours I don't have a trusted technique for this and with the model club competition a fortnight away I decided to go for the Maskol approach. As soon as I started putting it on it became obvious there was a mismatch in the side and top views on the decal instructions. Brakes on........! I've found some photos on the net so I'm going to scan the instructions and try and produce modified versions. Why is it I always get problems when I already have a 'fear and loathing' feeling when faced with camouflage?

As for the kit I reckon the Monogram F and G are the best Thud kits in 1/72 as long as you can live with the raised lines. The Trumpy D and G have one big weak point for me with the wing being in 6 pieces meaning it's very difficult to get a good match at the wingtips. This one didn't come out too bad but the following G has one 'mare of a wingtip where I assume I used too much pressure as the tip is much thicker than the wing it has to join to. The fin on the G is different from the D but not different enough whereas Monogram nailed the two seater fin. Seats are not really right, I've used an AM item in this but the G will use the kit ones with the canopy closed and fingers crossed. UC doors and legs are again OK in the Trumpy kits but the Monogram have more detail and are spot on to the photos in the Detail and Scale. Nothing really noticeable unless you have built both flavours.

Assuming the paintwork comes out ok (read that in a nervous tone) it will still be a good model and I should be at one or two shows next year with all 3 - the Monogram F already shown in 'Ready for Inspection', this D and the G following on the bench - so you can compare them if you see me around.

nice work - I have the trumpy G in the stash - noted your point about the wings... i also have a fear of the camo but liked the look of the kit which is why i got it... will attack it sometime in the (probably distant) future

Well the Maskol has been on and come off and this is what it looks like. I wonder if the grey is a shade too pale but I don't think I'm going to do anything about it, hopefully a coat of Kleer before the decals and matt varnish after will blend things a bit. Unfortunately it looks like I didn't get the wingtips to blend in as well as I thought (and this one went together better than the 105G on the bench).

The camouflage pattern is an attempt to reconcile the different views in the instructions (which don't match between top and side views, nor bottom and side views) with the somewhat vague photos on t'interweb. Hopefully it's somewhere near the real thing.

Finally the decals are on - possibly a bit of silvering despite a coat of Klear but overpainted most of that - and thank goodness it lives up to my usual mantra that a good coat of matt varnish will hide a multitude of sins! It has to - some of the decals silvered so badly I took them off with Microsol and the Klear promptly went white. Gentle sanding and touching up was required followed by duplicate decals from one of the other options on the sheet.

Final assembly to be done then it will appear in Ready for Inspection.
