geedubelyer
Tremendous images Shaun. That Frecce Tricolore opposition pass was nicely timed and looks superb I agree with your thoughts on Rafale, it is a lovely looking jet. Mind you, the Gripen looks pretty too. Did the Gripen fly on Saturday afternoon? Thanks for taking the time and effort to share some highlights of the day with those of us who were n't hardy enough to endure all that the elements had to offer Edited July 18, 2011 by geedubelyer
Seamus
Thanks for the additional comments guys, much appreciated What was the problem with the A10. I didn't think it was a regular routine! Big shame about that. A technical fault, which escapes me at the moment! He had the same fault during Friday practice which was sorted in flight, but he couldn;t do the same during his display proper so the decision was taken to cut his display short, as his time slot had been pretty much used up. A shame, as it was an excellent display on Sunday, if that's any consolation As I tend leave my camera setup on auto, what settings do you use on yours ? Shutter priority, or TV Mode primarily, certainly for aerial and taxiing shots. For jets, props and helos, I set the shutter speed to 1/500, 1/250 and 1/200 respectively, altering the exposure compensation accordingly for a good exposure. ISO is set to 200 for as long as I can get away with it i.e. anything other than really dark conditions. If it's bright and sunny, I'll bump the shutter speed up to 1/640 or more for jets, and drop it down to 1/100 if I'm feeling adventurous and want lots of motion blur on take off or landing. I'll drop down for props and helos occasionally too to achieve a full prop or tail rotor disc- 1/60 is about as low as you can go hand held. When changing shutter speed, I always ensure the EV is adjusted as necessary maintain the correct exposure. For static shots, I'll use Aperture priority, or AV mode. The lower the F stop, the shallower the depth of field, so I set it as low as I can for artier shots, knocking up to 8 or 9 for your run of the mill static shot. It's all about finding a balance between the settings really, which comes with practice Did the Gripen fly on Saturday afternoon? Certainly did, first fast jet up around 12:30 ish after the Turk had to cancel due to low cloudbase. Good demo, though a little difficult to photograph due to conditions and distance of the jet. Right then, a day late as I had little time after Sunday's show to edit any shots due to having to rise early for departures, but here's a selection of shots from the second day of flying. A much more full flying program, with only a couple of weather casualties, gave the chance to see a few of the acts cancelled from Saturday. I'd seen the Solo Turk practice on Thursday from P&V East, but it was nice to watch the display up close. A thoroughly enjoyable routine indeed, hard to choose between that and the yet again fantastic Belgian display. C-27 was fantastic, and nice to see a solo tornado, one of those things you don't think you'll miss until it's gone, a bit like the AAC Lynx at Yeovilton last week. Saudi Hawks were nice to see, though I must admit I was a little underwhelmed by the display, probably could do with a few more jets. Overall though, a quality second day of flying. Here's some more images then- I used the morning and lunchtime periods to browse the static park and try some more arty shots, so this set is a little more varied. Seamus
Thanks very much chap Here we are then, my final update for this years show from yesterdays departures. Another great experience down at P&V East, the afterburners seemed extra loud this year! Not Mark Bowman will be a particularly popular chap mind, after he opened the throttles a touch as he headed to the threshold, resulting in many a photographer diving down to stop their equipment getting blasted! Didn't see the Il-76 mishap from where we were, but the Flanker got a round of applause for his rolling departure, rightly or wrongly. A great day all round to finish off a superb weekend. Here's a selection of shots from the Eastern end then- light wasn't especially good for much of the day, making it a bit tricky at times, but I think I've come away with a few keepers RIAT2011_Monday_003 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_005 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_006 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_008 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_012 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_016 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_017 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_018 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_020 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_022 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_023 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_025 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_027 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_029 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_033 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_036 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_037 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_040 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_042 by Seamus_85, on Flickr RIAT2011_Monday_043 by Seamus_85, on Flickr So that's it for another year. Jazzy Jase
You can hire the lens Shaun uses for the whole weekend for around £100 from http://www.lensesforhire.co.uk/. Don't leave it too late like I did or they'll have run out.
Seamus
Thanks for the additional comments chaps, I'm rather humbled by such great feedback What do yuo mean by a rolling departure? The Flanker performed a barrel roll after take off, which was met by a round of applause. Non-standard departures are not advised apparently, but he looked to have plenty of height from our position. Rightly or wrongly, it was a great departure what was the Il-76 mishap all about? The Candid started to retract it's gear before leaving the ground, causing two tyres to burst and leave a bit of a mess behind on the runway. Bit of a schoolboy error by the pilot in truth. What kit do you use Shaun? What's your setup? To answer you both, body and lens are a Canon EOS 40D and Canon EF 100-400 L lens respectively. I occasionally whip out my Sigma 17-70 for big stuff, such as the Voyager, but that largely stays in the camera bag. Thanks again, Shaun
Stakka
Stunning photos and thanks again for sharing them. We camped the whole weekend and had a really good time but I did not take any photos. No problem at all, glad they liked them As for weddings, I'm actually giving it a go next weekend at friends wedding. Fortunately there's no pressure as I'm not the hired photographer, but it'll be good practice Thanks again Shaun
