i feel i should know this but, well i dont

ive just been given a 1/48 tamiya spitfire vb, and looking over the kit i noticed 2 sets of raised lines on the wings which the instructions say to remove, so i have 2 questions really

1, what are they

2, if they arnt ment to be there why have tamiya molded them, ive never seen them before

sorry to be stupid, but its that time of year

Not a silly question. Those raised longitudinal bumps on the wings were meant to strengthen that part of the wing and prevent catastrophic failure. Some models of the early Mk Vb had them, most did not. You would need to look at a real picture of the plane in question to know if it had them or not. Some of the early MkIb Seafires also had the same strengtheners on their wings. As for Tamiya's instructions......they are not infallible. I often wonder if they have a very good research department, or if the translation from Japanese to English is part of the proble. There are several MkVb's on the airshow circuit that have the same attachments. Depending on the actual aircraft that has the markings in the kit (if I remember the kit there are several pictures of that actual Spitfire in print) you may or may not have to remove them. hope this helped.

Cheers

They were known as "stiffeners," and were fitted, on the production line, from 16-7-42; if you're building BM144, EP594, or EN951, none carried them.

Mark,

My appologies for hi-jacking your thread a little. But seeing the photo's of the previous thread, can someone please confirm when Spitfires began to have the aerial wires that ran from the tips of the horizontal tailplane to the side of the fuslage (I believe the entry point is the brass coloured circle, seen just off center in the red spot of the roundel)

Many thanks Rad.

p.s.Mark enjoy the build, as a kit its a delight to assemble.

This is one which is exercising the "little grey cells" more than a little. The safe answer is 28-12-40, which is when the W3002 w/t equipment was introduced. W3002 was the I.F.F. Mk.2, and it was probably the same date that saw the detonator buttons itroduced on the starboard cockpit wall (they don't appear in either the Spitfire I or II Pilot's Notes.)

The head-scratcher, though, is the Mk.I I.F.F., which (like the Mk.II) needed a 7' aerial; on the Hurricane & Gladiator (wooden fuselages) they were housed inside the fuselage, only popping into view just before the tailplane. This doesn't appear to have been an option, with the Spitfire's metal construction, but I can't find any drawings of the layout. Maybe the aerial mast housed the VHF aerial, while the longer I.F.F. aerial stayed in use between the mast and rudder, but I simply don't know.

Incidentally, the circle, in the fuselage, was red, possibly the same plastic material as the seat.

Edgar,

Thanks for that information, its just I intend to build a 1/32 Mk Vb & Mk VI in 616 Squadron colours soon. I also see where you are coming from with the Circle, I took it as brass Due to it appearence in the photo.

Mark, I've just noticed where you're from- Hello neighbour!!
