Greetings all!

"IBEX Models", a new company in the market, is making out their first step in the plastic injection models.

Their first product is the T-6A Texan II in 1/48 scale.

The box includes a vac-u-form canopy, a few resin parts (ejection seat, pitot tubes, exhausts and a few more) and a decal set representing US and Israeli air force planes.

IBEX Models is an Isradecal Studios subsidiary and as we can see their intention is to make complete plastic injection models of unmanufactered products such as the Texan II.

Caracal Models will be releasing 1/48 T-6 Texan II & CT-156 Harvard II sheets for the upcoming IBEX kit. I have previously posted some drafts so most of you knew I was working on it, but it is now officially on the release schedule.

The first sheet will be available in about a month from now, soon after the release of the T-6 kit.

The options on the sheets are:

- U.S. Navy Centennial "Yellow Peril" T-6 scheme

- U.S. Navy/Marines commemorative "Corsair" T-6 scheme

- Two different US Navy line aircraft

- Canadian Air Force CT-156 Harvard II

- Hellenic Air Force T-6 Texan II

- Moroccan Air Force T-6 Texan II

- Iraqi Air Force T-6 Texan II

Here is some of the artwork I posted earlier. More details and finalized artwork coming later this week:

And with a vacuformed canopy. 😡
Definitely unacceptable to me for a modern kit and regarding its price category.

Furthermore let's have a look at that piece of vacuform - yes crystal clear but with uncredibly oversized raised frames. Those of the true T-6A canopy are in (near) perfect line with the plexiglas. Can you imagine a step of about 1-2 inches between the frames and the plexiglas? A nice simple shape as that isn't exactly difficult to reproduce, isn't it?
My recommandation: do not purchase this kit until IBEX proposes a correct - I mean clear injected - canopy.

Vacuformed canopies are the best way to disgust average modellers.
In my opinion a cheap but wrong technical choice.

I have to laugh at the reaction to vac canopies (although those look like spectacularly bad examples) - for so long people clamoured for manufacturers (especially short run) to include vac canopies because (short run) clear canopies were so bad. In fact, there was a cottage industry in replacing injection canopies of all sorts with vac canopies!

Looks slightly overdone, the frame on the real thing is nowhere near 'perfect line with the plexiglas' , there is a bit of a step although it's difficult to say for certain without seeing the kit in the flesh.

We've had the same tantrums recently over the Buckeye...canopy, fit and so on. I think the problem lies not so much with the kit but the type of modellers buying them. For the most part both the Buckeye and this Texan are the sort of thing that will appeal to the 48th scale fast jet crowd, the kinds of people whose meat and potatoes are made by Tamiya and Hasegawa...short run kits are not the sort of thing they're used to. The Buckeye is actually a nice kit and not particularly difficult to put together, providing you dry fit and make adjustments, rather than resorting to putty at the first sign of trouble. In the case of both kits the vac canopy is desirable because with something so large and curved it needs to be thin to be clear and undistorted. Go with an injection molded canopy and you finish up with something like that in the Airfix Hawk.

I would agree in that I LIKE vac formed canopies ( quite fond of vac formed kits too to be honest but that's another story) And like Dave I can remember people shouting for them, because they are thinner than injected ones and most times clearer. They aren't that difficult - no more so than learning how to get rid of a join line, and most kits give you two.

Agreed those are a bit horrid, but it IS a limited run kit, and compared to some I have had ( and licked into shape) they are no better or worse. I certainly wouldn't boycott a kit on the basis that it has something in it I didn't have much practice at. Obviously your mileage may vary but I think advising people to stay away from VF canopies is not necessarily a good idea: Learning to deal with them may enhance someone's skill set - and surely that's not a bad thing?

For a first effort, I think Ibex have done a cracking job. Agreed, the canopy framing is a little heavy but as for the rest of the kit, for a limited run the engineering is excellent. I have the airframe together and the fit would put most mainstream companies to shame. The worst bit about the kit is that it seems to capture the geeky ugliness of the actual machine to a tee. Or maybe that is part of it's appeal? That said, I wouldn't have touched it with a bargepole if it hadn't appeared in Greek markings. I also received the Caracal sheet through the post yesterday too, looks very nice indeed and if anybody is considering it, I can recommend ordering directly from them.
